Sixth album by the Mercury Prize-nominated Liverpudlian female vocalist who has been compared to artists as diverse as Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, Belle & Sebastian and Beth Orton. 10 tracks including 'Blue Unto You', 'Let It Happen' and 'Glass Bottom Boat'. Caw. 2006.

Acoustic instruments and downy-soft vocals are Kathryn Williams' forte on Leave to Remain, her sixth release since 1999's breakthrough debut, Dog Leap Stairs. Like that first album, Leave rustles up the intimacy of Joni Mitchell's most private material, with Williams delivering her observations and confessions in a singsong whisper. The arrangements are sparser this time around; of the 16 guest musicians listed on the album sleeve, only a small handful play on any given track. Williams' accented alto and literate lyrics are kept at the forefront, which -- given the strength of what she has to say, as well as the relative letdown of Leave's ornate predecessor, Over Fly Over -- is a stealthily smart move. Is Leave to Remain a conscious allusion to Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left? It's hard to say, but Williams' continued comparisons to Drake are, as always, well deserved. She lingers over every melody, her voice hushed and humble as string sections and finger-plucked guitars bubble beneath her. The subdued style wears thin toward the disc's end, but several variations in volume -- most notably the countryish semi-ballad "Hollow" -- hold their own with Leave's stellar side A. Those who mistakenly categorize such material as coffeehouse music should pay closer attention to Williams' candid lyrics, which often pack more bite than an espresso. "We've been f*cking all afternoon, burning like fossil fuel," she sings on "Glass Bottom Boat," her subtle delivery contradicting such a supercharged line. But lest Williams' poetry be mistaken for something pointlessly vulgar, she immediately follows with what very well may be her most poignant lyric about love: "I feel like you've turned me into a glass-bottomed boat; you see everything I hide but still keep me afloat." It's this combination of wit and grit that gives Leave to Remain a delicate edge. ~ Andrew Leahey

Mojo (Publisher) (p.103) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he songs are akin to frank diary entries, essayed in a voice of hushed comeliness."

Rush is no stranger to best-of compilation albums, they've released a slew of them. They are also no stranger to DVDs. To mark their 35th anniversary, they've released Working Men, which is both; it marks their first best-of live compilation exclusively from the DVD sets Rush in Rio (2003), R30 (2005), and Snakes & Arrows Live (2008). There is also an unreleased cut from R30 -- a killer version of One Little Victory. While fans may simply regard this as a record company cash grab, hardcore fans know how closely Rush monitors each release and controls all aspects of their career. On hearing these tracks without benefit of the visuals, it becomes lucidly clear that in the 21st century, Rush plays more like a hungry act looking to prove themselves rather than as seasoned veterans jaded by the entire business. The instrumental interaction between Neal Peart, Alex Lifeson, and Geddy Lee is utterly uncanny, the anticipation and the willingness to add flourishes and to challenge one another in the bridges and solo sections reveal their command of the material and their empathies for one another's playing strengths. One of the more revealing things on a ...

Pricipally recorded live at The Roxy, Hollywood, California from December 10-12, 1973; the Auditorium Theater, Chicago, Illinois in 1974; Edinboro State College, Edinboro, Pennsylvania on May 8, 1974. It's no secret that one of the most powerful weapons in Zappa's arsenal was his sense of humor, which was at its height in live performance. Consequently, there's no better way to get a feel for the full scope of Zappa's music than on the live ROXY & ELSEWHERE. This set finds Frank at his mid-'70s peak, working with Ruth Underwood, Don Preston, George Duke, etc. While all the tunes are technically impeccable (often featuring trademark feats of counter-intuitive derring-do), it's Zappa's humorous interaction with the band and the audience that puts the real spark into this ...

From the opening bars of DOOLITTLE, the Pixies' brilliant duality comes into focus. Chiming guitar streaks waft over an AOR-ready riff, while vocals bark out references to a deliberately obscure culture. "Debaser," for instance, finds singer/songwriter Black Francis alluding to "Chien Andalou," Spanish director Luis Bunuel's surrealist film renowned for a scene where an eyeball ...
Very Best Of The Dial Years
Charlie Parker Very Best Of The Dial Years CD  (2005)

Leave To Remain songs
CD $12.39  Audio Samples
The 20th century was full of musical geniuses who made tremendous contributions despite being highly dysfunctional and living dark, tragic lives. That was true of Marvin Gaye, Hank Williams Sr., Chet Baker, Billie Holiday and Kurt Cobain, and it was most certainly true of Charlie "Bird" Parker. One need only examine some of the song titles on Very Best of the Dial Years to see some evidence of Bird's dysfunction; "Moose the Mooche," as singer Athan Maroulis points out in his insightful liner notes, was named after Bird's heroin dealer in Los Angeles, and the title "Relaxin' at Camarillo" was inspired by the six months he spent in a California mental hospital. But Bird's demons didn't prevent him from recording a lot of brilliant, incredibly influential music, including the 78s he made for Dial Records in 1946 and 1947. Despite all the bad things that happened during Bird's visit to California (setting a hotel room on fire, suffering a nervous breakdown, the time at Camarillo), Bird's West Coast sessions for Dial were truly historic -- and many of the bebop treasures he recorded in Hollywood became standards, including "Ornithology," "Yardbird Suite" and "Cool Blues" (all of which are on this excellent CD). But not all of Bird's Dial sides were made in L.A.; for example, "Bird of Paradise" and "Scrapple From the Apple" (which are also on this album) were recorded after he returned to New York City. And it should be noted that this release's three bonus tracks ("Donna Lee," "Chasin' the Bird" and "Cheryl") were recorded for Savoy instead of Dial, ...
