| | Starflyer 59 My Island CD Starflyer 59 Discography of CDs
Starflyer 59's Jason Martin writes flat-out classic pop songs and then drapes a lot of shoegazer-y cobwebs around them as if worried that their brilliance might hurt the eyes. But you can't hide a great song no matter how hard you try, and MY ISLAND is rife with them. Highlights include "Mic the Mic," a tough little rocker with an insistent guitar riff; the slightly sinister "Nice Guy" (which makes you wonder if he really is one); and "Pearl of Great Price," which sounds for all the world like an outtake from PSYCHOCANDY.Alternative Press (p.212) - "MY ISLAND is sheer classic Martin genius, sporting twangy guitar leads, bold, arpeggiated chord progressions, and his endearing whispery vocal qualities." My Island album
$14.29 Starflyer 59 follows up the best record of their career, 2001's Leave Here a Stranger, with an album that sounds like a continuation of that fine disc. The same minor chords, breathy vocals, atmospheric production, and overall shoegaze sensibility prevail here. The arrangements are lovingly crafted, very dense, and packed with all kinds of guitars, Hammond organ, lush background vocals, percussion of all types, and nice surprises like tubular bells and occasional synth drums. Every nook and cranny is filled with sound that never overwhelms but rather creates a warm blanket of sound, wrapping the listener up in guitars and the intimate vocals of Jason Martin. The songs are all well-crafted and memorable; the new wave-inflected "New Wife, New Life," the sad "Major Awards," and ...
| | Starflyer 59 I Am The Portuguese Blues CD (2004)
My Island CD music
$12.39 On I Am the Portuguese Blues Starflyer 59 take a step back from the majestic shoegaze meets soft rock albums they have been crafting (Leave Here a Stranger and Old) and retreat to the noisy, almost grunge sound they exhibited on their early albums. The record is short, the songs not very melodic, and the vocals direct and upfront in the mix. In fact, it almost sounds like an album of outtakes from Gold or Americana. If you can get past the disappointment of the record being a step back from greatness, however, it isn't too bad. Songs like "Wake Up Early" and "Teens in Love" are catchy in a rocky way, "Unlucky" struts glamily, "Destiny" has ...

$12.49 With their ninth album, 2005's Talking Voice vs. Singing Voice, Starflyer 59 get back on course. Their last album, 2004's I Am the Portuguese Blues, was a strange step back in time that had the group recording songs that main Starflyer Jason ...

| | Ace Frehley Frehley's Comet CD (1987)
My Island music CDs
$9.65 In 1978, all four members of Kiss released solo albums simultaneously. Consensus among fans held that guitarist Ace Frehley's album was the most impressive of the four. Solo ambitions were what prompted Frehley to leave Kiss in the early '80s, but a serious car crash and recurring problems with drugs and drink postponed the release of 1987's FREHLEY'S COMET for a number of years. Joining ...
| | Modest Mouse This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About CD (1996)
My Island songs
$10.15 Expanding upon the themes of emotional and geographic isolation found in the band's previous work, This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About finds Modest Mouse mixing slow, brooding numbers such as "Custom Concern" and "Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset" with thrashing guitar workouts like "Breakthrough" and "Head South." The general mood here is one of loneliness and desperation, eloquently expressed through both the lyrics and the rhythmic, sprawling instrumentation. "Dramamine," for instance, with its driving, mid-tempo beat and ricocheting guitar line, sums up the ...
| | DJ Icey Funky Breaks CD (1997)
My Island album
$11.99 THE FUNKY BREAKS is a continuous in-the-mix recording by DJ Icey.
Forget the Miami Sound Machine, this is the Miami Bass Machine. Well, sort of. Miami Bass filters the likes of Ralf and Florian, Juan Atkins, Mantronix, and Afrika Bambaataa through synth envelopes. DJ Icey's brand of nu-school electro and samplewerk mines ...
| | In Strict Confidence Holy CD (2004)
My Island CD music
$12.95 Stalwarts of the late-'90s German electrowave scene, In Strict Confidence still operates well within the boundaries of the goth-industrial-electro territory, complete with blippy synthesizer beats, a dark but expansive acoustic, and Teutonic vocals that tend to be growly and are generally chanted or intoned rather than sung. But at the same time there's something more approachable about the chord changes and the band's almost hooky choruses that sets it apart from other groups operating in the same genre. You can actually ...
| | Trey Anastasio Seis De Mayo CD (2004)
My Island music CDs
$9.29 The first all-instrumental solo album from the lead singer, guitar player, and primary songwriter of the uber-jam band Phish, Trey Anastasio's SEIS DE MAYO is a relaxed and thoughtful foray into the world of orchestral music. Kicking off with a brief, jaunty track that prominently features the unusual sounds of ...
