Personnel: Anton Schwartz (tenor saxophone); Anton Schwartz; Peter Bernstein (guitar, guitars); John Shifflett (acoustic bass); Taylor Eigsti (piano); Tim Bulkley (drums). Audio Mixer: Dan Feiszli. Liner Note Author: Anton Schwartz. Recording information: Bay Records, Berkeley, CA (12/05/2005-12/06/2005). Photographer: Gregory Niemeyer. Arranger: Anton Schwartz. Anton Schwartz used the blues as inspiration for nine compositions heard on this studio session, though many of them are not especially bluesy. With a band including a longtime collaborator, guitarist Peter Bernstein, plus rising star Taylor Eigsti on piano, bassist John Shiflett and drummer Tim Bulkley, the tenor saxophonist kicks off the date with his percolating, funky "Phantom Dance," which rhythmically suggests the influence of Eddie Harris. His engaging "Slightly Off Course" would have easily been a fit with Art Blakey's repertoire, while Schwartz speaks his mind with a hot tenor solo in "Marcel Marceau." The only standard is a thoughtful arrangement of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave." The band provides strong support throughout the date, with Bernstein and Eigsti adding potent solos as well. Beautifully recorded in 24-bit stereo, this CD is warmly recommended. ~ Ken DrydenDown Beat (p.92) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he album is given a solid boost by Peter Bernstein, a Grant Green-rooted guitarist who always digs deeply into each playing situation." JazzTimes (p.106) - "As for Schwartz, he has a classic clear-throated tenor sound and kicks like a mule. His zeal to communicate is fervent yet sophisticated." $14.95 James Moody: James Moody (flute, tenor saxophone); Hank Jones (piano); Todd Coolman (bass instrument); Adam Nussbaum (drums, drum). The combination of James Moody and Hank Jones, excepting a few minor instances, has not been documented since the 1963 Argo LP Great Day. So this match-up of two jazz giants, with a collective experience of some 170 years at the time of this recording, is long overdue and exceedingly welcome. Concentrating on the music of Dizzy Gillespie and Tadd Dameron, these living legends of mainstream bop and hard bop turn this stack of ...
