The stark urban environment's contrast of race and class compound Sara's loss and her misplaced guilt, which are both exacerbated by the fact that her mother had been en route to her dance performance at the time of her death. But when she meets Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas), a popular black student with a passion for hip-hop and a future brighter than his troubled past, her repressed ambition and sorrow are released through a revitalized interest in the cathartic and expressive power of dance. Their friendship and mutual interest in dancing inexorably lead to a passionate romance that raises the sadly typical, bigoted resistance from Sara's white father and Derek's black friends. Widely hailed by critics for being as sophisticated and intelligent as it is viscerally passionate, SAVE THE LAST DANCE enjoyed the top of the American box office in its first weekend in release, playing to sold out shows across the country, a landslide affirmation that Sara and Derek are not as alone as they think. Theatrical release: January 12, 2001.
In preparation for the dance performances, Stiles and Thomas spent eight hours every weekend in dance studios and made regular visits to Chicago hip-hop clubs.
Sara's rural hometown was filmed in Lemont, Illinois.
Sara's ballet auditions were filmed at the Chicago Theater, the Schubert Theater, and the Athenaeum Theater.
SAVE THE LAST DANCE was number one at the box office on it's first weekend, taking in more than $27 million over the three-day Martin Luther King Day weekend. Save The Last Dance Quotes/Excerpts: "You come and take one of the few decent men left after drugs, jail and drive-bys."-- Chenille (Washington) to Sara (Stiles)
"We spend more time defending our relationship than actually having one."
Save The Last Dance Reviews: "...[Stiles'] performance, and her dancing, blossom in a pleasant, spirited way....Thomas projects a potently attractive self-confidence..."
-- Robert Koehler, Variety "...SAVE THE LAST DANCE teaches that you should never give up your dreams and that love is all you need..."
-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly "...[The film has] smart performances and pulls off the rare trick of tackling some thorny racial issues without becoming blandly moralistic..."-- Robert Abele, Total Film "...Well-crafted and smoothly paced, SAVE THE LAST DANCE benefits most strongly from its predominately youthful cast....Lawson and the most appealing Washington make impressions as vivid as those of Stiles and Thomas..."
-- Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times "...The development is intelligent, the characters are more complicated than we expect and the ending doesn't tie everything up in a predictable way....[Stiles is] one of the most talented of the emerging generation of actresses..."

Dont judge a book by it's cover I have watched this movie on VHS millions of times, so when I ordered the DVD I thought well I have already watched this so no big deal, just the same old thing. To my surprise when I looked at the special feautures on this DVD I became a kid in a candystore so excited to see what they had and i was surprised with the stuff that was on their. The deleted scenes caught my attantion the most, there were moments where I found my self saying... why did they delete that scene, it would have made the movie so much more interesting. $10.49 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter with cynical humor--Altman immediately vaulted himself to Hollywood's upper ranks. Based on the novel by Richard Hooker, M*A*S*H follows a group of Mobile Army Surgical Hospital officers as they perform surgery and pass the time just miles from the front lines of the Korean conflict. Led by sardonic captains "Hawkeye" Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and "Trapper" John McIntyre (Elliott Gould), the film has the feel of an absurd ...

$16.15 French philosopher-turned-filmmaker Bruno Dumont follows up his award-winning drama HUMANITE with the equally devastating TWENTYNINE PALMS. Dumont's self-professed "experimental horror film" follows a couple as they journey to the California desert town of Twentynine Palms and encounter true evil. David (David Wissack), an American photographer, and his Russian girlfriend Katia (Katia Golubeva), are scouting locations for an upcoming photo shoot. During the day, they drive David's Hummer into the expansive desert and roam freely, while at night, they argue in broken French and have animalistic sex. Eventually, their luck runs out, as the outside world catches up to them and causes their tragic demise.
TWENTYNINE PALMS is a jaw-droppingly brash work of art. Dumont takes a stylistic cue from French master Robert Bresson, simplifying his filmmaking technique in order to ponder deeper issues of humanity (good vs. evil, love vs. hate, sex/life vs. death). The result is a truly challenging film, which will confound ...
