Sean Jones is potentially a powerful trumpeter, but on this set he emphasizes his lyrical side. The music is influenced by his religious beliefs yet this is an instrumental set and most of the songs are originals. The only recognizable melody from the past is Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday." There is an incomplete feel to the performances and one finds themselves waiting for something unusual to happen, an explosion of passion or some excitement. It never does happen and, although the playing is heartfelt and quite musical, Roots never becomes particularly memorable. The music is pleasing but largely uneventful. ~ Scott Yanow

$14.55 Trumpeter Sean Jones emphasizes various vocalist friends for his fourth recording as a leader. His previous CDs have leaned toward a more produced pop-oriented approach within a definite modern jazz framework, and this effort leans toward a balance of combining those elements without being overtly commercialized. The first eight cuts all feature the singers, the most effective being rising star Gretchen Parlato. Her beautiful voice levitates Kendrick Scott's ballad composition "Journey," done on his debut CD, receiving a different, less expansive treatment, while the sunny swing waltz "It's Just a Matter of Time" has Parlato and Sachal Vasandani swapping opposing transposed crowded ...
| | Mike LeDonne Fivelive CD (2008)
Roots album
$13.65 Mike LeDonne has made a name for himself as a top-notch organist, though he has chops to burn on piano as well, the latter being his sole instrument on these performances recorded over two nights at Smoke in the fall of 2007. Joining him are some of his regular collaborators, including tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander and drummer Joe Farnsworth, along with trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and bassist Jon Webber to round out this excellent group. The pianist's fiery "Encounter" is built upon the chord changes to "Love for ...
| | Jeri Southern Dream's On Jeri CD (1998) (Import) United Kingdom
Roots CD music
$18.39 Jasmine Records has culled 22 songs from live performances, radio broadcasts, transcriptions and other "irregular" sources by the very fine vocalist/pianist Jeri Southern. Southern, the epitome of a singer from the cool school, was a major Decca, Roulette and Capitol recording artist during the 1950s before she got fed up with the companies' A&R types trying to make her a pop star...and simply quit. The playlist on this collection is a mixed bag, as it often was with Southern's releases. From time to time, she got trapped into singing some really trite material; a prime example on this album is "It Must Be True," where the best thing one can say is that every effort was made to have a pleasant rhyming metier. Fortunately, most of the playlist, if not all familiar standards, are listenable and enjoyable as rendered by Southern. There are also tunes closely associated with the languid Southern style, like two versions of her signature tune "You Better Go Now." On the first, she accompanies herself on piano, and on the second, she is backed by ...
