Carlos Coy--South Park Mexican--is a hardcore Chicano rapper from Houston who was serving a 45-year prison sentence when this 2006 album was released, watching it land at #46 on the Billboard charts. It features grisly rhymes about the gangsta lifestyle and Latino street culture, as well as hazy odes to his true love, Mary Jane (and he's not talking about a lady here), played out over woozy H-Town production.
Personnel: Russ Lee (vocals).

When Devils Strike CD music
$13.19 Rapper SPM acknowledges a past as a drug dealer, and that former occupation continues to inform his approach to his current career, from the name of his record label, Dope House, to the subject matter of his raps. His is a world of crime and retribution, expressed in language laced with the usual epithets and expletives. The raps are slower and more deliberate, the music more melodic than most other rap, and ...
| | South Park Mexican Time Is Money CD (2000)
When Devils Strike music CDs
$11.65 For his first album under his distribution deal with Universal Records, South Park Mexican seems quite comfortable with his increasing popularity, rapping like a veteran here. It's nice to hear him handling most of the album's rapping duties after his previous release, The Purity Album, seemed more like a compilation issued under his name. The production is a bit more polished here than on previous SPM albums, and the rhymes flow much more fluidly than ever before, making it arguably the most well-crafted SPM album to date. If there is one major problem, though, it involves SPM's level of comfort -- he almost seems too comfy here, knowing that he's finally crossed over into major label territory. One somewhat misses the inspired efforts of older, rawer albums such as Hustle Town. ~ Jason Birchmeier
"Houston native South Park Mexican is a cult hero in his home state of Texas with his old school rhyming style and beats influenced by old-school legends N.W.A. The Texan was hoping to break out of the Lone Star State with his fourth album, Time Is Money, but the ...

$12.29 Houston's Carlos Coy, the mastermind behind both South Park Mexican and Dope House records, is an example of the classic American rags-to-riches story. After hitting bottom as a denizen of the drug underworld, Coy turned his life around, rededicating himself to music. He started Dope House, which began as an underground hip-hop label but soon rose to national prominence. South Park Mexican is Coy's vehicle for self-expression.

| | South Park Mexican Never Change CD (2001)
When Devils Strike album
$11.59 Houston, Texas native Carlos Coy, alias South Park Mexican, creates an eclectic and ambivalent mix of dangerous, misogynist raps and pro- and anti-drug cuts (in a previous, teenage life he was a drug dealer) that are often as menacing as they are entertaining. Tracks such as "Habitual Criminal" and "I Must Be High" are hard, truthful slices of Houston gangsta life (the latter with the refrain "I know that I must be high so that I can function") that reveal the ...
| | South Park Mexican Reveille Park CD (2002)
When Devils Strike CD music
$13.19 Carlos Coy's follow-up to 2001's NEVER CHANGE is harder and meaner than its predecessor, almost as if the South Park Mexican had decided to circle the wagons and forget all about trying to court popularity outside his immediate Houston circle. He's still at his best when he's trying to combine R&B with Hispanic and Caribbean influences, such as on the infernally catchy "Suckaz and Hataz," and "Lord Loco's Melody." This combination has a charm all its own, but on this outing Coy is mostly more than happy to stick to his chosen turf--drugs, guns and hoes, all set to the barest of backbeats and the sparsest of instrumentation. NEVER CHANGE showed that lurking somewhere inside SPM's cool macho interior is a wellspring of creativity, and if REVEILLE PARK finds him resting on his laurels somewhat, he's still a block or two ahead of many of his contemporaries.
K0lbum. Most of the lyrics on this album were not written. SPM shouts out lyrics right off the top of his head. A form of artistic rapping that first became popular by artist like Yungstar, Lil Flip and other members of the Screwed Up Click (S.U.C.). Fans seemed to like this form of rapping because it gives ...
| | Mr Lex Mr. Lex CDs (2000)
When Devils Strike music CDs
$13.39 The latest hot boy on the dancehall scene, Lexxus has vocals that are as smooth as coconut milk, with the expected dash of spicy roughness. The opening track on Mr. Lex, "Get Wid It" provides a telling example of the DJ's swaggering style. Full of pounding riddims and sexy edginess, the tune was a dancehall favorite and a good indication of Lexxus' talent. Although his voice bears a close resemblance to dancehall king Beenie Man's ...

| | La Chat Murder She Spoke CD (2001)
When Devils Strike album
$14.49 On her debut LP, Murder She Spoke, La' Chat quickly establishes the fact that she's more than just a Gangsta Boo soundalike. Like Boo, Chat represented the feminine side of the Three 6 Mafia sound -- a ghetto, thug bitch from Memphis not afraid to get lewd and tell you how it is. And indeed the Three 6 camp plays a major role in this album's sound, with Juicy "J" and DJ Paul dropping their trademark beats, and the myriad Three 6 rappers making cameos throughout the album, often as foils to Chat's tough-girl stance. Unfortunately, it sounds like either "J" and Paul are saving their best beats for their own albums or perhaps that the duo are running a little short on ideas -- their production work here is surprisingly subpar. Yet, as typically Three 6 as the beats sound on Murder She Spoke, Chat's performance more than compensates. Once again like Boo, she could be one of the best MCs in the Three 6 stable. She exudes a harsh attitude and delivers her ...
