If there's any justice to be had, the 2006 reissue of John Phillips's solo debut, which adds eight previously unreleased tracks, will alert the world to the presence of this overlooked folk-rock gem. Originally released in 1969 in the wake of the demise of the Mamas and the Papas, JOHN, THE WOLFKING OF L.A. contains songs that rank alongside the finest Phillips penned for that group. A dream team of session musicians, including Sun Studios' guitarist James Burton and members of Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew, give the album its assured, sunbaked country feel, but it is the strength of Phillips's remarkable songwriting that makes this a treasure.
(guitar, dobro); David Cohen, Dr. Hord (guitar); Buddy Emmons, Red Rhodes (steel guitar); Gordon Terry (fiddle); Larry Knechtel (keyboards); Joe Osborn (bass); Hall Blaine (drums); Darlene Love, Jean King, Fanita James (background vocals).
Recorded in Los Angeles, California in 1970.
Personnel: John Phillips (vocals, guitar, harmonica); James Burton
Rolling Stone (p.79) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The songs thrive on dramatic harmonies, arresting melodies, Phillips' smooth, South Carolina-sired hippie crooning, country touches, and background vocals from the Blossoms..." Entertainment Weekly (p.95) - "[H]e enlisted a crackerjack band to document his whirlwind year on this reflective disc." -- Grade: A- Q (2/93, p.91) - 3 Stars - Good - "...really quite good, lightly melodic country rock..." Dirty Linen (p.85) - "[I]t stands as a vivid, tender, and gritty artifact of a memorable time and place." Mojo (Publisher) (3/01/04, p.53) - Included in Mojo's The 67 Lost Albums You Must Own! - "[T]ales of spilt wine, drug pick-ups and shipwrecks in a wash of country-soul harmony." | Wolfking Of La Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) This album is better than 5 stars!!! John Phillips, as a musician, was about as good as it got. Singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, producer...the man did it all. This, his first solo album, has never been available as a domestic release in the United States up until now. The remastering, added to the crackerjack production work, is just incredible. "Mississippi" is one of my favorite songs in the world, and I ALWAYS crank up the sound when I'm listening to it. I knew from his days with the Journeymen (which included Scott "San Francisco" McKenzie and Dick Weissman) that Phillips knew EXACTLY what he wanted no matter what project he was involved with. His success with the Mamas & Papas proved that conclusively. It saddens me that his personal life was riddled with drug and alocohol abuse, because if he were still here, we would all be hearing more incredible work from this genius. I hope all who want this album get a copy, and he gets the respect he so richly deserves. I am also looking forward to more releases from the Phillips estate that have never been available anywhere before. Wherever you are, John...here's to you! Wolfking Of La CD music
$11.35 The title of this most unusual compilation only hints at what's really on this CD, so let's spell it out: it's the sounds of women (and, only occasionally, both women and men) having -- or at least emulating -- having sex, and it is set to an extraordinary variety of musical backings. All of these 21 tracks were recorded in the 1960s (probably the late 1960s) and 1970s, but more details aren't on tape, due not only to the absence of all but the most perfunctory liner notes, but also to the total lack of artist credits for any of the selections (though song titles are given). An educated guess would surmise that some of this stuff was used in sexploitation movie soundtracks, and much of the rest in obscure exploitation albums that you could only buy in adult entertainment stores or the "other" section of conventional record shops. So what you get is quite a range of sighs, gasps, moans, heaves, and climactic shrieks, backed by basic funk, easy listening, jungle ...
