| | Lionel Richie Coming Home CD Lionel Richie Discography of CDs
(6 Customer Reviews)
Lionel Richie's career since his superstar heyday in the early 1980s has been spotty, marked by long silences and lackluster releases. The year 2006's aptly titled COMING HOME finds Richie delivering the one-two punch of uptempo commercial dance-pop and the sentimental love ballads for which he's known. Interestingly, Richie sounds less like an adult-contemporary artist on COMING HOME than ever before, thanks in large part to producer Antonio "L.A." Reid, and high-profile beatmakers like Jermaine Dupri and Raphael Saadiq. The results are surprisingly au courant (check the island-infused club track "Up All Night"), with dashes of new jack swing, hip-hop, and neo-soul, but Richie's old magic with a melody still takes center stage.Entertainment Weekly (p.77) - "Richie's silky voice glides through tracks like the throbbing, bongo-laden house workout 'All Around the World' and the blippy R&B single 'I Call It Love'..." Vibe (p.138) - "He sounds most at home here flaunting his noblesse oblige, as on the suave, yet stolid 'Why'..." Coming Home
$10.59 The first pressings of THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION included a bonus disc featuring rare tracks.
THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION, though not as thorough as the excellent two-disc set GOLD (released a year prior), is a handy overview of the Commodores' career, beginning with 1974's "Machine Gun" and concluding with 1985's "Nightshift." The only Top Ten R&B hits not included here are "Sail On," and a couple of later '80s cuts, so all the big funk jams ("Too Hot ta Trot," "Brick House," "Lady [You Bring Me Up],") and ballads ("Zoom," "Easy," "Three Times a Lady") are indeed included. This set also scores a little extra by including one of the band's best album cuts, 1976's "Girl, I Think the World About You," which has been left off at least 90-percent of all Commodores comps.
Although Lionel Richie was AWOL for most of the '90s, he's still a pop culture force to be reckoned with, and THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION ably supports this assertion. Between his work as a frontman for The Commodores, songwriter for other artists, and as a solo act, Richie became the only songwriter to score nine chart-toppers in nine consecutive years. Aside from Kenny Rogers' "Lady" and USA For Africa's "We Are The World," (co-written with Michael Jackson), all the other #1's are here: "Endless Love" (with Diana Ross), "Truly," "Hello," "All Night Long (All Night)," "Say You, Say Me," "Still" and "Three Times A Lady." That's not even counting the man's other ...
| | Stevie Wonder Time To Love CD (2005)
Coming Home
$13.69 On his first studio album since 1995's CONVERSATION PIECE, R&B legend Stevie Wonder revisits familiar ground from earlier eras in his career while keeping with contemporary pop sounds. Although certain tracks conjure up the vibe of early Wonder outings (the funky "Please Don't Hurt My Baby" and the sunny, upbeat "Positivity," which features additional ...

| | Beyonce B'Day CD (2006) Bonus Tracks
Coming Home
$9.99 Beyonce had little to prove on her second solo outing, B'DAY, having already demonstrated her taste, (solo) vocal prowess, and sparkling star quality on her first post-Destiny's Child release in 2003. Nevertheless, the singer and her crack team of producers and collaborators (R&B's finest, including the Neptunes, Swizz Beats, and Rich Harrison) have come up with a collection that's at least equal to her previous triumphs, and that shows off an almost angry intensity only hinted at on earlier releases.
The club hit "Deja Vu," with an extended rap from boyfriend/producer Jay-Z, boasts an addictive bass line that contrasts dramatically with Beyonce's emotive upper register. The haunting "Ring the Alarm" is a multilayered melodrama built around a dizzying minor-key hook that relies on Beyonce's vocal dexterity and newfound fire. Despite the appealing ...
| | Fergie The Dutchess CD (2006)
Coming Home
$10.49 The first release on Black Eyed Pea will.i.am's record label, THE DUTCHESS seems intent on giving Beyonce, Kelis, and every female pop/R&B singer a run for her money. With production help from Polow the Don and will.i.am (who also contributes raps to a couple of songs), Fergie delivers a record that kicks out spare club tracks inspired by Missy Elliott and M.I.A. (such as the disc's lead-off single "London Bridge"), alongside sultry soul ballads ("Clumsy"). There aren't many surprises here, but THE DUTCHESS is a glossy, fun, and satisfying album, which is exactly what her fans are expecting.
The association that versatile pop chanteuse ...
| | Janet Jackson 20 Y.O. CD (2006)
Coming Home
$11.19 Janet declares on the spoken intro to 20 Y.O. that she wants to "keep it light" and "have fun," and to that end the album boasts plenty of club bangers. "So Excited" and "Get It Out Me" are cases in point, with each sporting the spare, electro grooves ubiquitous in the early 2000s. Such tracks dot the disc, thanks to top-shelf producers like Jermaine Dupri and Terry Lewis, among others, but Jackson's way with a slinky ballad hasn't diminished, ...

| | Qubit Binary Vision CD (2008)
Coming Home
$11.15 If you were to picture yourself lounging comfortably on a fainting couch, sipping a Martini, surrounded by expensive décor in an ultra hip night club, you would expect to hear music that invites you to tap your feet or bounce to the rhythms yet still hold a conversation while soothing piano and guitar melodies play in the background. That…is the music of Qubit!Qubit has been a club DJ for over 18 years, spinning Trance, Techno, and Dream House. Yet, his upbringing was through the sounds of Smooth Jazz. While listening to his works, you can tell there is a unique style but very marketable. It’s as though when Qubit sits down to create a new song; he first wants to ...
