On Richard Cheese's Christmas album, Silent Nightclub, it's laughable how far Cheese and his cohorts go to find songs that fit the holiday theme. "Personal Jesus"? Sure. "Do They Know It's Christmas"? Naturally. "Like a Virgin"? Reaching. "I Melt with You" -- um -- why, exactly? Actually, the record could go even further with the premise: why not enliven the songs with some whacked-out Esquivel-style space age bachelor pad arrangements to go with the nod-and-a-wink vocals? ~ Stewart Mason
Richard Cheese: Richard Cheese (vocals); Martin "Boney" Provolone (trombone); Bobby Ricotta (piano); Wayne String (electric bass); Frank Feta (drums).
Yeah, here's the thing: sometimes it's best to just let a joke die. You know that person who was still saying "not!" at the end of every third sentence in, like, 1994? And how you just wished that person would at the very least just shut up already and, in extreme cases, be slapped repeatedly and in public? That's going to be the general reaction to Richard Cheese's Christmas album, Silent Nightclub. Yes, yes, easy listening versions of alternative rock hits, we know. It's played. Let it go. It's hard to gauge what's more annoying about Silent Nightclub, the mind-numbing banality of the premise or how laughably far Cheese and his cohorts go to find songs that fit the holiday theme. "Personal Jesus"? Sure. "Do They Know It's Christmas"? Naturally. "Like a Virgin"? Reaching. "I Melt with You." -- um -- why, exactly? Actually, to be bluntly honest, the most irritating aspect of the record is how it doesn't go far enough with the premise: why not enliven the songs with some whacked-out Esquivel-style space age bachelor pad arrangements to go with the smarmy nod-and-a-wink vocals? Simply put, there is little reason for this album to exist. ~ Stewart Mason Richard Cheese Silent Nightclub Songs | 1. | Holiday in Cambodia | $0.99 | |

Silent Nightclub album
$6.85 Head Hunters has spawned a thousand copies and copyists, but is only strengthened through comparison. One of the most enduring works of the 70s' jazz/funk legacy, and surely one of Herbie Hancock's most enjoyable and infectious recordings, the album was released in the deeply groovy days of 1973, and soon became the best-selling record in jazz ...
| | Richard Cheese Aperitif For Destruction CD (2005) Digipak
Silent Nightclub CD music
$12.69 If calling oneself Richard Cheese and offering lounge versions of contemporary popular songs strikes one as funny, that's probably because it's supposed to be. In a sense, Cheese, along with bandmembers with last names like Gouda and Brie, is an extended joke, and Aperitif for Destruction is a sophisticated version of Pat Boone's In a Metal Mood. While Cheese's taste in music occasionally crosses with Boone's (both cover Guns N' Roses; and both cover "Enter Sandman"), he prefers more scandalous material, opening Aperitif with 2 Live Crew's "Me So Horny" and Slipknot's "People Equal S***." Lounge style, ...

Silent Nightclub songs
$14.75 The Pizzarelli family treasured musical gatherings at home from the time the patriarch was just starting to play guitar, where he learned a lot from his two uncles about playing rhythm guitar. Long an accomplished sideman, soloist, and bandleader, Bucky Pizzarelli has performed and recorded with his sons John and Martin on a number of occasions over the years, while John has had Martin as the bassist in his group for a number of years. But this is the first family recording date with all three present and not a larger supporting cast, except for drummer Tony Tedesco, who is so well known to them he is considered family. But this time around, it is John playing electric lead guitar, with his father sticking to playing acoustic rhythm guitar. The songs selected date back many decades to the early days of ...

Silent Nightclub album
$7.79 In the late '80s and early '90s, two of the funniest characters on Saturday Night Live were the Sweeney Sisters, a Las Vegas-style lounge act that mercilessly butchered everything from Tin Pan Alley standards to Motown hits. Played to perfection by Jan Hooks and Nora Dunn, the ...

Silent Nightclub music CDs
$9.89 Mary Stallings joined Concord Jazz's roster with I Waited for You, an outstanding CD that posited the question, "Where has this fine singer been all this time?" Indeed, it was most regrettable that an artist of Stallings' caliber had done so little recording over the years when she should have been documented extensively. Carl Jefferson, the late founder of Concord, obviously felt that way, and he did right when he produced her Concord debut. Jefferson united Stallings with ...
| | Deftones Adrenaline CD (1995)
Silent Nightclub songs
$9.05 Along with Korn's 1994 self-titled debut album, the Deftones' 1995 debut, ADRENALINE, helped put California's new rage-filled metal movement on the map, subsequently inspiring countless other bands. Vocalist Chino Moreno was one of the first alternative/metal singers to specialize in the sing/scream style that would become prevalent by the late '90s, while guitarist Stephen Carpenter specialized in repetitive, mammoth guitar riffs that were comparable to both Black Sabbath and Soundgarden. While ADRENALINE wasn't a big hit right off the bat, constant touring over a period of several years helped set up the Deftones' eventual breakthrough success with the group's sophomore effort, AROUND THE FUR, two years later.
