(2 Customer Reviews)
On its third full-length outing, SWITZERLAND, the Motor City ensemble Electric Six unveils another "high-voltage" set of glam-tinged, club-ready rockers. Often sounding like the Sweet and the Cult mashed up by the Fischerspooner boys, the band, fronted by the ever-theatrical Dick Valentine, launches into ridiculous synth-heavy numbers such as "I Buy the Drugs" and "Night Vision." Those looking for evidence of the group's garage-rock roots will find it on the superbly silly, revved-up "Mr. Woman," which stands out as one of the record's gleefully garish highlights.

Spin (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A]n irony-heavy dance party. Guitar solos that crawled from a Foghat album mix with prog-rock synth homages..." Alternative Press (p.189) - "Electric Six's resident raving carnival barker and notorious loverman Dick Valentine winks and jokes his way hoarse on a spiritual guided tour of the underworld..." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.48) - "This third album is their best yet -- an unapologetic '70s-tinged glam-rock opus..." $12.79 Led by the lusty growl of Dick Valentine, the Electric Six recreate a 1970s dancefloor for rejects of both heaven and hell to boogie down upon. On a scandalous and smart 2003 debut, the Detroit band stirs metal, Southern rock, glam, and more, into a delirious post-punk stew, with lyrics of glorious nonsense such as "fire in the disco/fire in the Taco Bell." And the absurd lines are delivered by Valentine with such Bon Scott bravado and passion that it's near-impossible to divine just how serious is Electric Six. They're a graver Darkness and a sillier Tenacious D, a magnificent enigma with a genuinely fun first record.

| | John Mellencamp Freedom's Road CD (2007)
Switzerland MP3 Album
$12.49 (MP3 Available for Download) John Mellencamp's heartland rock has attracted as many critics as fans, but regardless of the listener's stance, 2007's FREEDOM'S ROAD makes one thing abundantly clear: Mellencamp is very, very good at what he does. The artist has used the five years since his last album of all-new material to full effect, crafting the songs, sound, and themes of FREEDOM ROAD to perfection.

| | Electric Six I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me CD (2007)
Switzerland music CDs
$12.79 As over the top as ever, Electric Six continues to satirically embrace the excess of sex, drugs, rock & roll -- and excess itself -- on I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me from Being the Master. Lyrics are fueled by an annoyance with present-day society (most notably: computers, fast food, television personalities, politicians, and Lenny Kravitz), but these themes are barely noticeable when paired with the throbbing dance beats and the campy Jack Black-ish mannerisms of Dick Valentine, who maintains the party atmosphere throughout. A high-concept album isn't necessarily what E6's fan base is looking to hear -- they want to have fun -- and it's nice to see that Valentine hasn't lost his acute sense of bombast. The macho swagger is still an important highlight of his shtick, and he continues to invent ludicrous catch phrases like "put a little mustard on it" and bellow them with a completely straight ...

| | Rachid Taha Diwan CD (1998)
Switzerland CD music
$16.29 (MP3 Available for Download) The sophomore release from Algerian singer Rachid Taha. This is a stunning album, as he moves through straightforward rai to blues, rock, and the full spectrum of worldbeat. The album starts out with a song about exile from home, followed by a musical history of rai, covering all of the basic steps in the development of Taha's chosen base-style. An Egyptian film song from the great Farid El Atrache continues the barrage of bouncing Middle Eastern and North African sounds. A more modern version of the ay-ay genre ensues, with fuzzed guitars looped throughout. Some urban Algerian blues and a bit of chaabi follow, on the topics of love and love lost. The album finishes with a stretch of slightly more serious songs, with a number based on the Algerian war for independence and the torture endured by its prisoners, a political song from a Moroccan ...
