Willy Porter has been working the singer/songwriter circuit for a good 16 years now, being picked up and traded between major and independent record labels and building a strong following among the demographic that considers Michael Hedges and Rickie Lee Jones superstars. On Available Light he shows himself equally capable of gritty contemplation ("Available Light"), sturdy but unaggressive folk-rock ("Loose Gravel," "Reveal"), and good-humored, technically impressive instrumentals ("Hairball," the faintly jungle-influenced "Where Are My Keys?"). He's also capable of instrumentals that are pretty without being very substantive ("Sleepy Little") and of songs that gently and unexpectedly break your heart ("One More September"). His bandmembers are so good that half the time you don't notice they're there, but they build an atmosphere like a thunderhead on the title track, and they turn "Where Are My Keys?" into a richly textured layer cake of tones and rhythms that manages to showcase Porter's acoustic guitar without drowning it. ~ Rick Anderson

Dirty Linen (p.84) - "Songwriting has always been one of Porter's strong suits, and his work here, notably the poignant 'One More September' and the roots rocker 'Loose Gravel,' maintain his previous high standards." Willy Porter Available Light Songs Available Light Review

Available Light album
$9.99 Disc Two is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks as well as multimedia computer files.
When Goldfrapp's debut, FELT MOUNTAIN, appeared in 2000, no one was quite sure how to categorize the music, but that didn't stop fans and critics alike from gushing about it. A collaboration between singer-keyboardist-songwriter Allison Goldfrapp and composer/producer Will Gregory, Goldfrapp is rooted in the heavy-lidded, ambient soundscapes of trip-hop, yet exhibits an equal interest in various other styles ranging from jazz to cabaret to film music.
On FELT MOUNTAIN, Goldfrapp sometimes sounds trapped in an Ennio Morricone-styled tableau: all whistling and spooky wind-swept vistas. Elsewhere, the duo exudes the cool, tongue-in-cheek ...

$13.89 These days, musicians often complain that major labels no longer believe in real artist development -- if a debut album isn't a big seller, chances are the artist will be dropped. But artist development is still alive and well at smaller independent labels (for the most part). That is where some A&R people are still willing to develop artists and offer two- or three-album contracts instead of merely one-album deals -- which is a good thing because not every artist should be expected to be commercially and creatively triumphant the first time he/she records an album. Some people get better as they go along; even Earth, Wind & Fire recorded several modest sellers before becoming one of the top soul/funk bands of the '70s. Willy Porter is a good example of the need for strong A&R, because even though the singer/songwriter has always had a lot of potential, he hasn't always lived up to it and has needed the right guidance and direction. Thanks to generally insightful A&R on the part of Six Degrees Records, this self-titled CD is among Porter's more memorable efforts. When this 2002 release is playing, one gets the impression that the best is still yet to come from Porter -- even ...

| | Adrian Belew Side One CD (2005)
Available Light CD music
$11.49 By 2005, it had been nearly eight years since Adrian Belew had unleashed an all-new solo studio effort. That's not to say he wasn't busy, though, as he toured/recorded with both King Crimson and the Bears during this time. And in the process, he became quite friendly with two of rock's top players -- Primus' Les Claypool and Tool's Danny Carey -- who ...
