Its cover art (a charcoal black photograph of a decomposed doorway) and title (PALMLESS PRAYER/MASS MURDER REFRAIN) posit this set as a collection of thrashy hardcore metal. Instead, this collaboration between Mono and World's End Girlfriend--two Japanese experimental acts that indulge in rock, electronic, and myriad other forms--plays like a summit meeting between Morton Feldman and the Kronos Quartet. Dark, intimate, and unsettling, the album's five tracks conjure a unique classical chamber music with the sounds of strings, piano, guitar, voice, and ambient noise. The results are eerily beautiful. Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain CD music
$12.25 Any band that's been around for a decade will show some progression, and Japan's majestic Mono is no exception. True to form, on the heels of 10 years of playing together, they've recorded their most elaborately orchestrated album yet. A sweeping, cinematic set of six songs, HYMN TO THE IMMORTAL WIND finds the band collaborating with a large chamber orchestra, lending them a dramatic gravitas that they could not achieve on their own. Songs like the gorgeous "Ashes ...
| | Peter Cetera Solitude/Solitaire CD (1986)
Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain music CDs
$9.09 Chicago's early-'80s return from the scrapheap did more than bring the group its biggest chart successes: it finally shattered the carefully maintained "faceless" image that had prevented any member from becoming an individual star. In the dawning age of video, the band needed a focal point, and bassist Peter Cetera -- already the voice behind Chicago's soft rock smashes like "If You Leave Me Now," which had made significant inroads with the MOR audience -- was the logical choice. So it wasn't a huge surprise that, following Chicago XVII, Cetera decided to use his new celebrity to strike out on his own. He'd already come close to leaving a few years earlier, making his first solo album when Chicago was at a commercial low point; this time he had plenty of momentum, reinforced with a little cross-marketing for the movie The Karate Kid, Part II. Cetera's gallant "The Glory of Love" served as the film's theme and became a major hit as well as defined his post-Chicago sound -- essentially XVII without the horns, with one ultra-slick L.A. producer (Michael Omartian) replacing another (David Foster). The loss of brass, even in the subservient role it had come to play in post-resurrection ...
| | Guided By Voices Selective Service CD (2001)
Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain songs
$7.85 Selective Service is a collection of three limited-edition vinyl singles (all out of print) that were available via the Fading Captain Series label, an imprint devoted to the prolific output of Robert Pollard (Guided By Voices). First up is GBV's live rendition of "Dayton, Ohio-19 Something and 5," a melancholic look back at the easygoing days of old that first appeared on the classic Pollard/Tobin Sprout team-up, Tonics and Twisted Chasers. The three home demo recordings that follow feature Pollard alone with an acoustic guitar, and are easily the most intimate recordings he has released in years. Although this occurrence may cause the fanatical to salivate at the thought of Bee Thousand-era lo-fi brilliance, there's just as much focus on his intricate plucking (who knew he was such a fine guitarist?) as there is on melody, with nary a chorus to be found. The two Airport ...
| | 999 The Biggest Tour In Sport/The Biggest Prize In Sport CD (2002) (Import) United Kingdom
Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain album
$17.09 Some people call 999 'punk rock', but others call them rock and roll. Just listen to the chugging rhythmic guitars, steady backbeat, and snappy melody on "Homicide," the opening track to the U.S.-only live EP, The Biggest Tour In Sport. Recorded on their 1980 U.S. and Canadian tour to support the Biggest Prize In Sport LP, this six-track EP is spicy hot, containing the band (punk) rockin' and rollin' through four old classics, "Inside Out," and "Boys In The Gang," from Biggest Prize. Live recordings can be questionable, but this is one of the few where you don't have to worry about the sound quality: it's terrific. Up next on this disc are two non-album B-sides, and a non-album A-side; all three are worthwhile 999 pub/punk rockers. Those tracks are followed by one of the most important punk albums ever! Upon first listen, many folks were amazed to find out that 999 were a great rock n roll band, punk or no punk. The edges are still there, but they are well-rounded this time out, thanks to producer Vic Maile. The anthemic "Boys In The Gang" starts off the set in style (but 999 always knew how to kick-start an album). "Inside Out," with Guy Days' twisted guitar riff, picks up the pace. Although "Trouble" slows things down with its reggae groove, it's such a great change of pace (Nick Cash's wail sounds similar to the Specials' Terry Hall on this track). "Fun Thing" has a great little hook, and a powerful guitar solo that will grab you by the balls. "Hollywood," about their first trip to California, received solid airplay in the U.S., and ...
