(1 Customer Review)
On its second full-length, the U.K. band Kasabian is at its most effective when it sticks close to Mickie Most-inspired pop gems like the title track and the monolithically rocking "Shoot the Runner" (the latter of which, perhaps uniquely in the modern rock canon, conjures elements of both the Fall and of Deep Purple). The Ecstasy-gobbling ghost of Madchester hovers over the swaying "By My Side," while the hurtling hallucinogenic high of "Aponea" is the realistic-sounding aural manifestation of a cracking night's clubbing. No wonder singer Tom Meighan sounds fashionably exhausted on the pretty, reflective "British Legion," which, with its mood of post-party ennui, is nostalgically reminiscent of mid-period Kinks.
Kasabian: Sergio Pizzorno (guitar, synthesizer).
Spin (p.99) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "EMPIRE constantly changes its focus, from the synth-heavy theatrics of the title track through punk-infused vocalizing, jack-hammer percussion, and mellow, acoustic balladry." Entertainment Weekly (p.95) - "[T]here is a certain genius to how cannily they combine elements of the past..." -- Grade: B Q (p.125) - Ranked #8 in Q Magazine's "100 Greatest Albums of 2006." Uncut (p.80) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] rock group with enough metronomic menace to attract indie diehards and disenfranchised clubbers....Like a sonic lightning rod, EMPIRE crackles with an electrifying tangle of influences..." Alternative Press (p.200) - "[L]ike a primer in recent rock history....[With] vaguely spiritual Stone Roses guitar freakouts throughout..." CMJ (p.48) - "This is the sound of swaggering suaves raised more on Chemical Brothers than Glimmer Twins." Mojo (Publisher) (p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Nailing Britpop harmonies to club beats is where they score most highly....EMPIRE is every bit as powerful as its title suggests." Empire album
$8.99 It was only a matter of time before England's late-1980s/early-'90s club-crazy Manchester scene inspired a band like Kasabian. Big beats, prominent synths, and thumping basslines make the 2005 debut by this Leicester outfit a direct conduit to the days of the Stone Roses, Primal Scream, and the Charlatans U.K.
This outfit, named for a Charles Manson victim, vividly recalls a time when pumping out rock & roll that was suitable for the dance floor wasn't an anomaly. There are plenty of moments that conjure this vibe on the band's self-titled debut, ranging from the ethereal-yet-energetic "L.S.F. (Lost Souls Forever)" to the acoustic-guitar-driven, groove-laden "Processed Beats," which sounds like a lost Charlatans outtake. Dance-rock Anglophiles will also adore "Cutt Off," a trippy tune that mixes in mentions of the solar system and LSD with subtle flute and vibraphone lines.
Pre-release hubbub might have you thinking Kasabian's debut is the Stone Roses' firstborn all over again, or that it's a Screamadelica for its generation. Almost, but these lads could use one more spin around ...

| | Arctic Monkeys Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not CD (2006)
Empire songs
$11.59 Reportedly the fastest-selling debut in British history at the time of its early-2006 release, the Arctic Monkeys' WHATEVER PEOPLE SAY I AM, THAT'S WHAT I'M NOT is a brash, hook-filled album that immediately warrants music fans' attention, if perhaps not all of the pre-release hype. Clearly taking notes on the evolution of U.K. punk, the Sheffield-based band reveal the influence of revered predecessors such as the Jam and the Clash, while most notably evoking the ...

| | Lcd Soundsystem Sound Of Silver CD (2007)
Empire CD music
$8.85 As wryly noted on LCD Soundsystem's debut 2002 single, "Losing My Edge," in the underground music arms race, aging hipsters are losing ground against young upstarts who are (perhaps) unaware of their own influences. And if influences are the stuff with which post-millennial musicians are made, Murphy has trumped us all. Touching on reference points ranging from disco, krautrock, Bowie, house, and post-punk, to singer-songwriter types, SOUND OF SILVER is a veritable catalog of left-field cool. Leading off with the slow-boil, hypnotic opener, "Get Innocuous"--which sounds a bit like a reprise of "Losing My Edge" crossed with Kraftwerk's "The Robots"--the album moves from dance-floor stormers to plaintive piano numbers without batting an eye. On "North American Scum," Murphy ...

| | 'Doc' Drinkwater It's Not Too Late CD (2005)
Empire songs
$14.79 From a small, plastic, child's guitar to a custom-made, Bourgeois, Countryboy, Dreadnaught, flat-top, guitar, Mark 'Doc' Drinkwater has carved himself quite a diverse and intriguing musical path. As with many aspiring musicians, 'Doc' Drinkwater started playing in "garage" rock bands, and acoustic duos during his junior high and high school years. After graduating from high school, he "immersed himself in the world of Jazz and Blues" at Berklee College of Music - which he attended for two years. Post graduation from Berklee saw him working primarily in musical sales, promotion and marketing for large record retailers. During that time he continued playing solo acts and trying out different bands. Also playing and singing in various churches. In April of 2004, 'Doc' attended a performance by Maine music icon, Bill Chinnock, at the Asylum in Portland, Maine. He approached Chinnock shortly after that and asked if he would be interested in producing his album. After listening to three of 'Doc's songs, Chinnock - along with his partner and bass player, John Kumnick - agreed to produce and even record with him. 'Doc', Bill and John have just completed recording, producing and mastering, It's Not Too Late, 'Doc' Drinkwater's first album, at The Artist Group Studios in Yarmouth, Maine.Musicians contributing to the record are 'Doc'- Acoustic Guitar and Vocals, Bill Chinnock-Acoustic/Electric Guitars, John Kumnick-Bass Guitar, Steve Jones-Electric and Acoustic Guitars, Andrew Pelletier-Drums, Tim Butterworth-Piano and Singers-Janis Pendarvis, Lynn Deeves, Jess Tardy. 'Doc' believes the songs he writes, "have a spiritual inspiration and they reflect on all the life experiences he has had - both musically and emotionally." He feels the songs on his CD tend to defy categorization. Though his writing has a "pop" feel, he runs the gamut from rock to country, jazz to blues, rock-a-billy, and even R&B. Although reluctant to state specific artistic, musical influences, claiming, "there are far too many to name here," he was quite clear that the music teacher from his adolescence was the person who was his greatest influence. Itmar Lubetsky showed him "how it was, to love music and be a good student at it." He continued, "I will forever remember his driving me to always be better." "And my mother (Anne Drinkwater of Burlington, Mass. ) has always been my biggest fan and supporter, without her this recording would not have been possible". When asked about future projects, it is apparent that 'Doc' plans to hold lengthy office hours. He is currently planning tours to support the release of his CD, It's Not Too Late. He will ...
