| | Briggs Back To Higher Ground CD Briggs Discography of CDs
The Briggs come from the punk school of bands like the Clash, Rancid and Dropkick Murphys. So it should come as no surprise that brothers Jason LaRocca and Joey LaRocca conjure up large, meaty singalong choruses with tight punk riffs throughout. There's a lot of energy and intensity held in each ditty, especially with the rousing "Let Them Know" that is sure to cause spilled beer and a great deal of fist-pumping. From there, they take some of the sonic fat away for the enjoyable and lean "Song of Babylon" that sounds like a classic Social Distortion number. Perhaps the song that sounds eerily like Rancid circa Life Won't Wait is "Maritime Tragedies," while at the same time, the group slows things down somewhat for a punchy, angular "Everyone's an Actor" that puts them more in line with a group like Franz Ferdinand. But that's an exception to the feel-good, shin-splint inducing "Wasting Time" that is of a similar ilk as Green Day's "The Grouch." Back to Higher Ground rarely falls off the rails, with crisp, polished, radio-friendly gems coming in the form of "Insane" that sounds like a long-lost cousin of "I Fought the Law." The intensity is lacking, though, for Harder to Stand which is a rather routine punk rock or power pop tune. Fortunately, that's quickly forgotten when the infectious "Blacklist" comes along. ~ Jason MacNeil

Back To Higher Ground album
$9.99 In a contemporary landscape where what passes for "punk" is often little more than a watered-down, mega-mall version of the mighty music that once horrified authority figures the world over, it's nice to know that some bands can still rock with the same pre-irony, heart-on-the-sleeve sensibility that characterized the genre's greatest moments. On ANCHORS AWAY, the Bouncing Souls forego faddish Blink 182-esque smarminess in favor of a holy racket that sounds like the best mid-1980s CBGB's matinee that never was. In addition, the band has a keen sense of ...

| | Disturbed Sickness CD (2000) Edited
Back To Higher Ground music CDs
$13.35 Disturbed's debut found the band crawling through the mire of contemporary metal staples for a cohesive direction. The staccato primal scream that became the band's trademark helped break the single, "Down With The Sickness," in tandem with the song's Tool-meets-Pantera rhythmic complexities. From the rap metal grooves of "Voices" and "Stupify" to the neo-reggae vibe of "Violence Fetish," THE SICKNESS was a musical forecast of things to come for Disturbed. "Numb" found the band making a foray into more melodic and progressive territory, an approach they would further develop with 2002's BELIEVE.
Alternative metal exploded during the late '90s thanks to groundwork laid by groups like Nine Inch Nails, White Zombie, and Rage Against the Machine, and as record companies scrambled to find the next Korn or Limp Bizkit, the genre became clogged with legions of similar-sounding bands, all trying to find just the right blend of low, heavy guitar riffs, rap-metal, industrial, and intense aggression. Often, those attempts could result in sounds that seemed too calculated and self-consciously cobbled together to feel natural; plus, inventive production was frequently employed to disguise ...

$34.69 WHISPER TO THE WILD WATER was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album.
The fourth solo release by harpist, keyboardist, songwriter, and accomplished vocalist Maire Brennan offers yet another dense and evocative soundscape populated by the channeled spirits of Celtic landscapes and lore. Like the folk-pop amalgam pioneered by Brennan's family band Clannad (who have been putting out albums since the early '70s), WHISPER ...
| | Buck Wild Beat Me Silly CD (1996)
Back To Higher Ground CD music
$10.69 As it happens, Buckwild's debut album, 3/4at Me Silly, was the first full-length release on Lobster Records, the label guitarist and vocalist Shawn Dewey started with his friend Steve in the mid-'90s, and it could not represent the label's modus operandi any better. Dewey started the band as a return to playing parties and no pressure kinds of shows, and 3/4at Me Silly is obviously a work of energetic joy. The album moves effortlessly between brash, modern post-punk ("One Day" resembles what Foo Fighters might sound like if that band was as grounded in punk as they claim, bypassed bright, shiny production, and just played ...
