The musical collaboration of Heavens was born when Josiah Steinbrick (ex-F-Minus) played some instrumental tracks he had previously laid down to his housemate Matt Skiba (of Alkaline Trio fame). Excited by the music's potential, they began working together, the latter penning lyrics, and after fleshing everything out with producer Ben Lovett in the studio -- who did an excellent job bringing it all together -- the duo's striking debut, Patent Pending, was complete. Twice removed from the punk dominating their other respective bands, and riddled with the influence of Depeche Mode, Brian Eno and the Sisters of Mercy, the album is a shadowy, somber collection of songs that relies heavily on synths and drum programming, and which would serve well as the backdrop to a solitary, midnight stroll through a quiet, misty cemetery. As always, Skiba's brooding sentiments fall in the realm of the murderous, disturbing, and otherworldly. His voice is an absolute perfect match for Steinbrick's dark instrumental musings, singing in a much lower register than the norm for Alkaline Trio. But Skiba in no way carries the whole project himself, as the yin to his yang is the impressive songwriting of Steinbrick, who has provided a canvas of crisp, austere soundscapes that are extremely clean, yet not overly produced. The arrangements are methodical and engaging, whether in the despondence driving the string-laden "Heather," the lively programming and paranormal harmonies of the title track, or the ominous post-punk stalking of "Watching You." As if one really expected any less from this partnering of musicians, Patent Pending is an accomplished album and one of the most rewarding listens you'll find all year. ~ Corey Apar

Heavens Patent Pending Songs Patent Pending Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Purely amazing One of the best i have heard from Matt Skiba. Dark lyrics with kind of a smooth calming instrumental background. great CD top 5 for me. Submitted by Masterp2124 (Illinois) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
dark atmospheric and chilling this album is a dark more slower style than alkaline trio does and the lyrics are original and dark. Amazing guitar work and music and but dont buy this expecting to hear alkaline trio. Submitted by krkk (dallas tx) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
...if you like the cure... well matt skiba has done it again. the brilliant, dark, sadistic mind behind alkaline trio makes an attempt at mainstream, and does it well. if you like the cure, youll certainly like this. very good. oh yeah, cduniverse, matt skiba does all the vocals, not ben lovett, might wanna check the liner notes folks. good album for sitting at home on a dark stormy night, with a bong in hand. $12.35 Taking into account the tattoos, nose rings, and spiky haircuts, one might be forgiven for instantly pegging Lit as a punk-pop band no different from a dozen other Orange County, California combos. One listen to the group's recordings, however, reveals what Lit fans have always known--the band creates some of the most diverse and well-crafted music of its genre. On the group's self-titled fourth album, Lit's trademark Cheap Trick-esque power-pop is very much in evidence, but the sound is fleshed out with echoes of Kiss, Billy Squier, Foghat, and a host of other 1970s and '80s arena rockers. Standout tracks include "Lullaby," a Dashboard Confessional-like life-on-the-road weeper, and "Forever Begins Right Now," a bouncy British Invasion-style rave-up.
This eponymous set is Lit's fourth, and their most self-assured to date. After a three-year hiatus, during which they ended their relationship ...

| | Belanova En Vivo CD (2006) With DVD
Patent Pending album
$12.59 This set includes 18 live tracks. Featured artists include Coti, Joselo de Cafe Tacvba, and Jay de Moderato.
Consider Belanova's Dulce Beat Live CD/DVD a victory lap for the Mexican electronic pop trio, who released this concert recording just in time for the 2006 holiday shopping season following a solid year of tremendous success in their native country. There were few acts more popular in Mexico over the course of the preceding year than Belanova, with the arguable exception of RBD, who likewise enjoyed omnipresent media saturation, even as the kids labored part of the year on Celestial and Rebels. From the sound of Dulce Beat Live, Belanova has a fan base nearly as ardent as that of RBD. Similar to the riotous spectacle of the latter group's regularly released live albums, the fans here seem to know every single word of these songs, singing along en masse and erupting into a frenzy of adoration often, especially whenever vocalist Denisse Guerrero banters on between songs. Guerrero exhibits an impressive command of the audience, functioning not only as Belanova's spotlight draw but also as the ringleader of the circus. Really, that's what this concert release is, a circus show intended to demonstrate just how popular Belanova had become a year or so after the release of Dulce Beat and how zealously their young, largely female fans adore Guerrero's every word, strut, and gaze -- seemingly her every breath. As for the actual music, it's not bad. The sound quality of the recording is understandably not up to par with the glimmering ...
