The second album from This Providence, who confusingly originate from Seattle, is a palatable concoction of pop-flavored emo that contrasts the new wave-influenced "Card House Dreamer" with the pretty, acoustic "My Beautiful Rescue," and the teen optimism of "Anything Is Possible" with the quasi-religious, cello-accompanied "Road to Jericho." The band signals its musical ambitions by dividing its miniature opus "The Pursuit of Happiness" into two movements, and wears its angst on its sleeve in the jagged, stopped-time "Secret Love and the Fastest Way to Loneliness."

Alternative Press (p.202) - "Flaunting cool acoustic flourishes, decent enough pop chops and more bounce than a quarter machine full of those tiny balls..." This Providence album
$10.39 Principally recorded at The Theater Studio & Mindswerve, New York, New York.
Mindless Self Indulgence's brilliantly named The Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy collects more of the group's outré, hip-hop-tinged industrial thrash. Singer Urine's bizarre falsetto sounds like a sped-up Jello Biafra, especially on tracks like "Boomin'" and "I Hate Jimmy Page." The ...

| | Big Innings: Best Of The Outfield CD (1996)
This Providence music CDs
$7.59 Digitally remastered by Chris Athens (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
The Outfield's brisk pop sound gave them five Top 40 singles within the span of five years. Their sound is comprised of remnants of classic rock which is soothed by the fluidness of Tony Lewis' voice, and a front-line guitar attack driven by John Spinks. Big Innings is a generous, 16-track compilation made up of the Outfield's hits as well as their unreleased and B-side material, offering a delightful roam through their short-lived stint. With "Your Love," "All the Love in the World," and "Voices of Babylon" representing some of their greatest chart successes, the rest of the collection still houses many other pleasing contributions. The effectively encumbered guitar charge of "Since You've Been Gone" from 1987's Bangin' stands out, as does the sheer charm of "For You" off of 1990's Diamond Days. Although acoustic tracks such as "Alone With You" ...
| | Session With The Remains CD (1996)
This Providence songs
$11.39 The bulk of A SESSION WITH THE REMAINS is taken from the garage-rock band's audition for Capitol Records, recorded live in a New York studio on May 26, 1966. All of the 13 tracks are previously unreleased in the U.S.; 6 of them are previously unreleased anywhere.
Recorded in 1965 and 1966. Includes liner notes by Jeff Jarema.
Boston's Remains--or Barry and the Remains, as they were occasionally known--are known to the general public primarily because they were one of the opening acts on the Beatles' summer 1966 tour, including the legendary final show at Candlestick Park. Fanciers of classic garage rock recognize that the Remains are worth more than a footnote, however, and A SESSION WITH THE REMAINS is the result of the kind of fan worship only a true cult act can receive: this is the band's seven-track demo for Capitol Records along with a handful of live-in-the-studio rehearsals.
The demo shows all sides of the band, ...

| | United States Of America CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Reissue
This Providence music CDs
$13.99 Originally released on Columbia in 1968, The United States of America is one of the legendary pure psychedelic space records. Some of the harder-rocking tunes have a fun house recklessness that recalls aspects of early Pink Floyd and the Velvet Underground at their freakiest; the sedate, exquisitely orchestrated ballads, especially "Cloud Song" and the wonderfully titled "Love Song for the Dead Che," are among the best relics of dreamy psychedelia. Occasionally things get too excessive and self-conscious, and the attempts at comedy are a bit flat, but otherwise this is a near classic. ~ Richie Unterberger
In its original form, the United States of America's self-titled (and sole album) was one of the most exciting and experimental psychedelic albums of the late '60s, blending searingly imaginative electronics with equally unusual songs that were both piercing and dreamy. Although a Sony Music Special Products CD with two added previously unreleased outtakes was briefly available in the early '90s, Sundazed's reissue is the definitive one for those who want even more than the original album offered. While the two somewhat half-baked outtakes from the previous CD reissue ("Osamu's Birthday" and "No Love to Give") are here, this disc adds a further eight tracks that were never released before, including yet more outtakes and some substantially different alternate versions of songs that did make it onto the final album. While none of the alternates are as good as the versions that ended up being used, it's fascinating to hear the cuts in cruder but equally trippy arrangements, particularly the three from their September 1, 1967, Columbia Records audition session (for which ...
