| | Classical Jazz Quartet Plays Bach CD Classical Jazz Quartet Discography of CDs
The Classical Jazz Quartet -- with pianist Kenny Barron, Stefon Harris (vibes and marimba), bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Lewis Nash -- interpret the music of Johann Sebastian Bach as arranged by Bob Belden. One of the strengths of this date is the wealth of solo opportunities for each musician, instead of focusing the spotlight excessively on any one or two musicians. Beginning with the brisk treatment of the normally legato choral prelude "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," it's clear that the quartet is ready to swing. Less familiar to the casual fan of Baroque music is Bach's "Oboe Concerto in A major, 2nd Movement," a piece recast by Belden with a samba-like flavor. The group turns on the afterburners in a boppish romp through the normally laid-back "Brandenburg Concerto #2 in F Major, 2nd Movement," as Harris literally wails along with his vibes. It's not surprising that these four superb musicians finished their work on this CD during just one session; it's obvious that they enjoyed themselves immensely. ~ Ken Dryden

$18.15 Upon Duke Jordan's initial visit to Copenhagen, Denmark, followed by his decision to make the move as an expatriate permanent, he was tempted to stay by playing with some extraordinary Scandinavian rhythm sections. Bassist Mads Vinding, one of many skilled Danish jazz bassists, is here on the date performing in fine style. Drummer Ed Thigpen, who left the U.S. to take up permanent residence in Europe, was an even bigger influence ...

Classical Jazz Quartet Plays Bach songs
$13.25 After a decade and a half of dwelling in the shadows of the vanguard jazz pantheon, saxophonist David S. Ware reaches his zenith with this rendering of Sonny Rollins' 1958 magnum opus Freedom Suite. Originally composed for performance by a trio, Ware's addition of Matthew Shipp's piano to the proceedings allows him to completely reconceptualize the entire work. Where Rollins' original bordered on atonality with restrained tension held by the rhythm section, Ware allows the dissonance free reign, or nearly so. This does not mean he doesn't follow Rollins' dictations for flow or progression, ...
