Doc Watson's influence on country guitar playing is incalculable, and taken alone, his solo records are more than enough to call his career legendary. But by the 1970s, Watson was performing with his son Merle and this compilation captures the duo's high-water mark in the early '80s, shortly before Merle's tragically early death. The listener will find impeccably played roots tunes of all varieties embellished with very slight touches of contemporary rock & roll.
Personnel: Doc Watson (vocals, guitar); Herb Pedersen (vocals); Merle Watson (guitar, slide guitar, banjo); Norman Blake, Tony Rice (guitar); Mark O'Connor (fiddle); Tom Scott (clarinet); T. Michael Coleman (bass guitar); Ron Tutt (drums); Gene Estes (percussion).

Black Mountain Rag album
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, ...

$16.29 This two-CD compilation, assembled from the Walker Brothers' three albums and various singles released by Philips between 1965 and 1967, gives a good overview of their U.K. history without limiting itself to their hits. The sound quality is good if not exceptional -- one gets the sense that another round of remastering would be in order (and while we're talking about sound, wouldn't one like to see a Mobile Fidelity reissue on the Walker Brothers or, for that matter, Scott Walker's best solo stuff?). And the track order isn't chronological -- their two best-known ...

Those whose knowledge of country music history begins with Travis Tritt (or even Hank Williams, Jr.) probably have a hard time understanding what "outlaw country" meant in the late-'60s/early-'70s. Willie Nelson, along with people like Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson pioneered the movement, offering a gritty, rootsy, long-haired, rock-informed alternative t
