Released on what would have been the legendary Queen frontman's 60th birthday, EMI's Lover of Life, Singer of Songs collects 20 digitally remastered tracks from the late vocalist's eccentric solo career, including pre-Queen singles, soundtrack offerings, and cuts from his two official solo releases (1985's Mr. Bad Guy and 1988's Barcelona). This is good news for fans who were unwilling to dip into their savings to pick up Parlophone' s mammoth ten-disc Solo Collection, as it utilizes the majority of that collection's strengths. For the most part, this is all anyone could want from a non-Queen Mercury overview, and despite the inclusion of a few too many posthumous remixes, serves as moving eulogy to one of popular music's most beloved voices. [Lover of Life, Singer of Songs also comes in a two-disc edition, as well as a CD/DVD package.] ~ James Christopher Monger
Subtitled: Lover Of Life, Singer Of Songs. 2006 digitally remastered collection of solo recordings by Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury, celebrating what would have been his 60th birthday. Features tracks taken from his albums Mr. Bad Guy (1985) and Barcelona (1988), both sides of his 1973 Larry Lurex single plus 'Love Kills', his contribution to the Metropolis soundtrack, and more. Most of the tracks featured here are the original album and/or single versions of these outstanding solo recordings as opposed to the posthumous remixes that have been released time and time again since his untimely death in 1991. 19 tracks total including 'The Great Pretender', 'Living On My Own', 'Made In Heaven' and more. | | Robert Plant Nine Lives CDs (2006) With DVD; Remastered; Box Set
Lover Of Life, Singer Of Songs
$65.69 Listening to the whole of Plant's catalogue, what impresses most is its variety and range. Beginning with 1982's PICTURES AT ELEVEN and continuing through 2005's MIGHTY REARRANGER, NINE LIVES offers up atmospheric grooves, 1950's-style pop, synth-driven new wave, Middle Eastern drones, straight blues, and a healthy dose of post-Zeppelin thunder. Plant's voice morphs too, from dispassionate popster to banshee wailer to retro crooner and elsewhere, never letting the shadow of his former band determine his stylistic choices. Beautiful packaging and a comprehensive booklet sweeten the deal, making this a must for collectors or anyone looking to explore Plant's work in depth.
The colossal legend of Led Zeppelin looms so mightily over the history of rock that it's sometimes easy to overlook the fact that Robert Plant has had a solo career that's ...

| | Dead Can Dance Spleen And Ideal CD (1985) Remastered; Sacd Hybrid
Lover Of Life, Singer Of Songs
$18.05 SPLEEN AND IDEAL is a profoundly different sounding record than its self-titled predecessor. It seems to have been recorded in a completely different time, perhaps by the 14th century ancestors of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, if they had access to electric guitars and synthesizers. The tracks are all stately, muted affairs that actually managed to evoke the images that their titles suggest--the best example of this is the brittle, gorgeous "Circumradiant Dawn," which sounds like a hymn written to accompany Earth's very first sunrise.
Among the standouts here are "De Profundis (Out of the Depths of Sorrow)," where Lisa Gerrard's voice soars above the haunting, sustained chords of the music; ...

| | Little Feat Dixie Chicken CD (1973)
Lover Of Life, Singer Of Songs
$7.59 DIXIE CHICKEN is the first album by the most enduring Little Feat line-up: Kenny Gradney replaced departed bassist Roy Estrada, and New Orleans musicians Sam Clayton and Paul Barrere rounded out the new group. This line-up went through periodic break-ups and reunions until the death of Lowell George in 1979. The great Neon Parks album paintings were anticipated almost as much as the next collection from Little Feat, the band with which his work became inextricably linked.
This album found them at a musical peak as a stellar 70s rock band who had oodles of swamp blues and funk, with a loose shambling style that spoke of confidence rather than sloppiness. Lowell George ...
| | Six Parts Seven Things Shaped In Passing CD (2002)
Lover Of Life, Singer Of Songs
$11.59 Relaxing, subdued, and unobtrusive, the six slow-paced instrumentals on Things Shaped in Passing work best as background music that doesn't demand too much attention or emotional commitment from the listener. Fans of bands such as Mogwai, Sonna, and the Album Leaf may appreciate the album's reflective tone, the interplay between the individual musicians (including James Haas' atmospheric use of lap steel guitar), and the way the songs unfold gradually without obvious attention-grabbing hooks. However, some listeners may find the songs to be too diffuse and wish this gentle music wasn't quite so genteel. While this album doesn't quite stand out from other post-rock instrumental recordings, it does have ...
