Love's a Real Thing is an excellent introduction into the wild sound world of West Africa in the '70s. As Ronnie Graham points out in his superb liner notes, the '60s were a time of assimilation for much of the popular music of Africa. Many bands were playing a hybrid of Latin and African music typified by the Congolese rhumba of Franco & OK Jazz. The '70s were a different bag, though, with the heavy electric sounds of Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Cream, and others seeping into the consciousness of a new generation of Africans who were also contending with their own emerging sense of identity. The results are raucous, exuberant melting pots of funky soul, psychedelic rock, and honey-sweet Latin horns mixed through the sensibilities of extremely talented African bands on the cusp of developing styles like soukous, mbalax, and Afro-beat. The first solo record by Appleseed Cast frontman Christopher Crisci is a lo-fi delight, strongly recalling Neutral Milk Hotel's early work, but not bound to Jeff Mangum's twitchy lyrical pose or occasional forays into weird for weird's sake. Crisci's voice and acoustic guitar are at the center of these ten songs (plus two brief untitled instrumentals), but the true star of the album is multi-instrumentalist Jordan Geiger, who throws trumpet, banjo, glockenspiel, a tinny-sounding toy piano and various other unexpected instruments ...

Stereo Total return to their cheap 'n' cheerful roots on Do the Bambi, making it their most consistent set of songs since 1999's My Melody. 2001's Musique Automatique had almost as many not-quite-there moments as it did brilliant examples of the group's synth pop-rock sass; this album might not be quite as ambitious, what Do the Bambi lacks in scope it more than makes up for in quality. "Babystrich"'s stylishly quirky synth pop, the sweet duet "Das Erste Mal" and "Les Lapins" are all quintessential Stereo Total, as are "Europa Neurotisch"'s sophisticated bounce and the charmingly off-kilter "Partymadchen Gefoltert" ("Tortured Party Girl"), which lives up to its name. Do the Bambi's spare production works especially well on the coyly bittersweet title track and "Helft Mir," but also suits punchier songs like "Hungry!" and the robotic synth pop of "Troglodyten." Stereo Total's love of film plays a major part on Do the Bambi, most obviously on "Cinemania," a cute who's-who that name-checks everyone from Woody Allen to Sophia Loren, and "Orange Mecanique," a clever and affectionate homage to Wendy Carlos' soundtrack to A Clockwork Orange.
