| | Bob Marley Rastaman Vibration CD Bob Marley Discography of CDs
RASTAMAN VIBRATION's burlap-esque jacket design couldn't be more appropriate packaging-this is a load of Natty knowledge delivered in simple, raw fashion. And there's a real beauty in the weave. This 1976 release finds Bob dropping ever more lyrics on human entanglements both local and global, his transcendent voice threading wisdom through it all.
"Positive Vibration" and "Roots, Rock, Reggae" are anthemic in character, inviting all listeners to quit their negativity and start a-dancin'. "Want More" is a promise of bad karma for back-biters everywhere, leadened fearfully by solemn bass lines and seamless production. Perhaps most compelling here is "War," a musical setting of a 1968 speech on global justice by the Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia. Bob's echoing fade with the words, "Good Over Evil" is positively haunting. While Peter Tosh's voice is absent, the classic exchange between Marley and the I-Threes (backing vocal divas, for those not in the know) shines all the more brightly in the spotlight. Funky organs are everywhere. Every track on RASTAMAN VIBRATION is an excellent piece of vintage roots reggae, proving just how powerful and tight Bob's studio sessions could be.

"I'll never be a rock and roll star," Reel Big Fish's Aaron Barrett sweetly sings out in frustration at his band's inability to reach pin-up proportions on "I'll Never Be." Ah, but that song was written long before the group decided to "Sell Out," and promptly garner the attention Barrett so craved. Their timing was impeccable, for ska was then terminally "Trendy," and the Big Fish were ready to be reeled into the big time. So Turn the Radio Off, because their songs sound better coming out of the stereo minus the annoying DJ and ads that interrupt the party. This is the band's first album for Mojo, but some fans will already be familiar with many of the songs within, as nearly half the set features tracks from their self- released debut Everything Sucks. However, they've all been fabulously re-cut ...

$16.45 Tommy Cowan isn't a household name outside of Jamaica, but on that island he is a legend. He was a member of the rocksteady group the Jamaicans, he toured the world as Bob Marley's business manager, and he's the one most responsible for the legendary Reggae Sunsplash series of concerts. Life Goes in Circles focuses on his Talent Corporation enterprise, a collection of artists, promoters, and imprints that the self-proclaimed "catalyst and facilitator" gathered to promote Jamaican music. One of the many hats Cowan wore was as liaison between the American music business and the Jamaican music business. When outside R&B began to take serious hold on the island, Cowan created the Talent Corporation to battle the monster he'd helped create, so it's no big surprise the roots music here is deep and true.
