| | Killers Sam's Town CD Killers Discography of CDs
On the 2006 follow-up to their wildly successful debut, HOT FUSS, the Killers' continue their torrid affair with1980s New Wave, but manage to incorporate the sounds of that era, particularly heavy use of synthesizers, more seamlessly into the mix. This is due, at least in part, to the presence of veteran producers Flood and Alan Moulder (Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, U2), who help to make the tracks on SAM'S TOWN both brighter and edgier than earlier Killers tunes. While the Las Vegas-based act's Britpop-influenced songs are still marked by Brandon Flower's emotive vocals and bold synth lines, Dave Keuning's guitar riffs are amped up on much of the record, as exemplified by the urgent single "When We Were Young," which easily stands as one of the quartet's finest tunes. Other highlights of this brooding album are the dramatic "Bones" and the yearning title track, songs that prove that the Killers may have unforeseen substance lurking under their carefully rendered style.

Island. 2006.Spin (p.93) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Everything is constructed to epic dimensions, almost according to physical laws of acceleration and propulsion....There's no denying the brute efficiency of the hooks." Q (p.126) - Ranked #5 in Q Magazine's "100 Greatest Albums of 2006" -- "[A] valentine to the mythic Americana of prime Springsteen." Mojo (Publisher) (p.104) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[They] resume their successful formula -- loud guitars, '80s pop hooks, glitterdust synths -- but these 12 songs come with extra muscle and star-spangled lyricism..." Sam's Town album
$21.29 FOREVER CHANGES is also included in its entirety on the 2 disc set LOVE STORY 1966-1972.
One of the first pop albums to become a cult classic, Love's 1967 masterpiece, FOREVER CHANGES, is the pinnacle of the L.A. freak (the locals' preferred term over "hippie") scene. Singer/songwriter Arthur Lee's lyrics are increasingly fragmentary and paranoid, foreshadowing the band's eventual drug-fueled collapse. Yet these drop-dead hip tunes are set in arrangements featuring Herb Alpert-style mariachi horns, lush middle-of-the-road strings, and other tropes of the easy listening scene, creating a more unsettling sense of tension than if the songs were given the usual heavy rock instrumentation. Every single track is a stone classic, although second songwriter Bryan MacLean's contributions, the haunted "Old Man" and especially the simply gorgeous opener "Alone Again Or," deserve special consideration. FOREVER CHANGES belongs high on any halfway serious list of the greatest pop albums of the '60s.

| | In My Living Room CD (1999)
Sam's Town music CDs
$12.55 According to the liner notes by "Andy" (no last name given), this compilation was an outgrowth of his "putting together a home studio to do hi-fi recordings of bands in a living room environment." These tracks were, apparently, recorded in a living room or something like it, and meant for listening in a living room situation as well, since most of it is low-key alternative rock with a folky bent. There aren't any big names here, unless you count Richard Davies, but you might recognize Mary Timony (of Helium) and Chris Colbourn (of Buffalo Tom), who use this as an opportunity for a solo side project outing. It's pleasant, if not essential, stuff that's more agreeable than compelling. The tracks by Ida and Valerie have nice female harmonies that add sonic variety; Seana Carmody's "Crystallized Your World" sounds a little like the kind of folk-rock played by Penelope Houston. ~ Richie Unterberger
You're excused... go ahead and punch out. Exhale. Now go home. It's okay. You can leave all that behind you for awhile. There's another place. It's quiet and comfortable because it was designed to be that way. And you can always return to re-acquaint yourself with the person who lives there. Welcome to your living room. There is no need at the moment to imagine the type of music that might prop you up for an evening in that room, under the afghan on your favorite couch with that satisfying read. We've done it for you. The In My Living Room compilation was ...

$4.25 | | Pernice Brothers Nobody's Watching/Nobody's Listening CDs (2005) (Import) Import
Sam's Town songs
$20.99 The Pernice Brothers spent much of 2004 on the road. With no new album in the foreseeable future, the band figured a live album would be a good way to keep the Pernice-loving masses satisfied, and they were right. Compiled from two shows recorded in January 2004 at New York City's Mercury Lounge, Nobody's Watching/Nobody's Listening is a stunningly recorded document of the group's live show. Joe Pernice's vocals are note-perfect and wringing with emotion; at one point he jokes to the crowd that he is giving himself an aneurysm. The band is tight, loud, and dynamic throughout -- all the things you want your power pop combos to be. A large number of the 12 songs come from the band's first album, Overcome By Happiness, and it is fascinating to hear the live band's slightly grittier take on pristine chamber pop treasures like "Clear Spot," "Crestfallen," and "Monkey Suit." The ...
