| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
Super Mania Coba CD music
$12.99 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged ...

An interesting collection of singles and posthumously archived material created in the same way as Hendrix's CRASH LANDING and The Beatles "Free as a Bird," (albeit with most of the original musicians), CONFRONTATION is more consistent than one would expect and includes at least one certified classic in "Buffalo Soldier." The record features some very tasty guitar, good vocal performances and the always rock-steady rhythm section of the Barrett brothers. While not absolutely essential, it should certainly be the next purchase for anyone who already owns all of the official Marley albums. While the disc is perhaps a little light on variety, it's still a Bob Marley album and ...
| | Essra Mohawk Raindance CD (1995) Reissued
Super Mania Coba music CDs
$10.69 Mohawk's first outing in a decade shows that, if nothing else, she's been giving her songwriting muscles a decent workout in the intervening years. It's easily her most accessible, radio-friendly effort, if not her most satisfying. Indeed, Tina Turner had already recorded Mohawk's hook-heavy "Stronger Than the Wind" several years earlier. There are other changes afoot, too. Her voice -- always a husky instrument -- is deeper and rougher-edged, in the manner of, say, Kim Carnes. Raindance's country-rock setting suits Mohawk well, and the heartfelt conviction is as apparent in her warm singing voice as ever. High points include "End of a Long Bad Dream," an anthemic eulogy to long-lasting love, and the clever, snappy barroom rock of "Wrap It All Around," one of the most convincingly commercial songs she's ever written. It's reassuring too, that nearly three decades after her debut, Mohawk still propounds the virtues of peace, love and understanding, and rejects jaded cynicism at every turn. "It's History," a rare slower cut, is a touching paean to lost ideals: "Prejudice and arrogance, greed and apathy/are tearing at the fabric of our precious liberty." Close your eyes, and you can feel the groundbreaking spirit of Primordial Lovers still very much alive in Mohawk's work today. ~ Charles Donovan
