(1 Customer Review)
50 Cent protegee and G-Unit crew member Lloyd Banks returns with ROTTEN APPLE, the follow-up to his successful 2004 debut. With beats from 9th Wonder, Havoc, Needlz, Dave Morris, Fatin, Midi Mafia, Timbaland, and Eminem, and a controlled flow that at times outdoes his mentor in sheer slickness, the Queens native shines here. The album rigidly adheres to the same "commercial-but-street" blueprint followed by virtually every G-Unit, Dipset, and Roc-A-Fella solo release. Banks gets help from an impressive guest list that includes Mobb Deep, Scarface, Young Buck, Tony Yayo, Musiq Soulchild, 8Ball, 50 Cent, and Rakim.
After a promising debut, G-Unit soldier Lloyd Banks hedged his bets, subdued the hungry, punch line-filled style that defined him, and delivered a so-so effort that coasts on the G-Unit formula. With an EP's worth of heat -- the infectious single "Hands Up" with 50 Cent being the hottest -- Rotten Apple is no disaster, and there's no doubt the G-Unit faithful will get twice as much out of this than everyone else, especially with the G-Unit universe guest list and the numerous raw, freestyle-flavored productions that sound like they fell off a G-Unit Radio mixtape. The long, word-filled flows are here, as are the humorous stingers Banks likes to drop, but his delivery is surprisingly weary, and often on the more street tracks, the production is drab, making it easy to drift away from the words no matter how sharp. Luckily, G-Unit's bag of hooks just keeps on giving, and when Rotten Apple goes for polish, it succeeds. Besides "Hands Up," there's the cool "Help" -- a "one for the ladies" track with Keri Hilson -- and "You Know the Deal" with Rakim, which sounds exactly how Mobb Deep's G-Unit debut should have. Rocking it with a trio of Southern ballers -- Young Buck, Scarface, and 8Ball -- Banks offers the excellent "Iceman" before closing with "Gilmore's," one of those loose, casual, and satisfying numbers G-Unit members always seem to drop at or toward the end of their albums. "Iceman" and "Gilmore's" suggest Banks is the last soldier who should fall into the "I own this/I own that" or "I moved this many units/You didn't move nearly as many" ruts G-Unit is famous for, but he does, too often to ignore. The highlights are way high, but the album as a whole is "fans-only." [Rotten Apple was also made available in a clean version, with all explicit material removed.] ~ David Jeffries

Rolling Stone (p.74) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Eminem, Mobb Deep's Havoc and a host of G Unit regulars produce an album's worth of chunky, ominous beats to fit Banks' foul mood..." | | Mary Martin Stockdale Timeless CD (2004)
Rotten Apple album
$21.49 Mary Martin Stockdale has all the credentials of a new age pianist: classically trained, she lives in rural Colorado and teaches at the Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School, in her spare time spinning out original piano instrumentals to which she gives titles like "Willows by the Stream" and "Smoke in the Valley," and to which she assigns "artistic impressions" in her liner notes, such as "Tender but strong, always bending, offering a place of refuge for animals, home, hardy, persevering" (that's "Willows by the Stream"). But in her press biography, she confesses to being introduced to Broadway show music by her parents and admits that she "also couldn't help but absorb the vibrations from the whole Sixties revolution which was reflected in the music of that time." Whatever ethereal and abstract imagery she may conjure to enable herself to compose and play her pieces, that exposure to Broadway and '60s pop comes through loud and clear. To listen, for example, to "Henry's Song," which the artist herself relates to "Children dealing with illness, the whole spectrum of parental love, hope for healing," is to hear echoes of Burt Bacharach here, Gerry & the Pacemakers' "Ferry Cross the Mersey" there. Usually, there isn't enough of a familiar melody to name a direct antecedent, but Stockdale has a taste for short melodic figures like the one that repeats all through "Runnin' Fence," melodic figures that a Paul McCartney or Richard Rodgers would extend into formal, and very catchy, tunes. In Stockdale's hands, such little melody fragments are placed within typical new age embroidery much of the time, but they're still there, giving her music an unusually memorable quality for the genre, and suggesting that someone needs to introduce her to a good lyricist. ~ William Ruhlmann
Solo acoustic pianist and composer Mary Martin Stockdale combines three themes into her instrumental music -- nature, The West and philosophies of life. Her just-released third album, TIMELESS, like its predecessors, can be enjoyed simply for its beautiful melodies, or also appreciated for the deeper emotional resonances beneath the surface.Stockdale's CDs can be purchased or ordered in many stores nationwide. For more information or to purchase her albums online, go to marymartinstockdale , Amazon or CDbaby ; or to buy digital downloads, go to musicmatch , emusic or buymusic . All three albums -- TIMELESS, TROUT CREEK LULLABY (2001) and PORTRAITS ON THE PIANO (1999) -- have each climbed to one of the top three positions on the international new age airplay charts. | | Misty River Midwinter Songs Of Christmas CD (2004)
Rotten Apple CD music
$16.45 Intimate, pure, beautiful-MIDWINTER.The second new release in 2004 from the award-winning, acoustic, americana band Misty River, MIDWINTER-SONGS OF CHRISTMAS is a stunning collection of traditional favorites, little known classics, and original songs. The result is a fresh yet intimate celebration of the holiday season, with Misty River's 'spine-tingling' voices, tasteful song selection and creative instrumentation setting MIDWINTER apart from the run-of-the-mill Christmas release. Although often compared to the neo-bluegrass sound of Alison Krauss, this 'indie' band from the Pacific Northwest has a sound all its own. The four women of Misty River are most well known for their compelling vocal harmony. For Misty River fans, MIDWINTER lives up to that expectation. But the 12-song album is also graced with exquisite lead vocals and distinctive combinations of accordion, fiddle, guitar, banjo, piano, ukulele and upright bass. Grammy award-winning guitarist Doug Smith lends his talents to two of the tracks. From their humble beginnings at an open mic in 1997, Misty River has built a large and enthusiastic ...
