(20 Customer Reviews)
Those who've seen his stage show know that Mos Def works from inspiration, going with the music wherever it takes him. Throughout his recording career--from his status as one of the brightest stars in the original Rawkus line-up, to his classic teaming with Talib Kweli as the duo Black Star, to his genre-transcending solo albums--Mos Def has utilized his own diverse musical tastes to produced an equally diverse sound. In the past he's built on rock (like the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Under The Bridge") and soul recordings, and put post-modern spins on classic hip-hop beats and rhymes, taking them and making them his own. On his highly anticipated third solo album, TRU3 MAGIC, Mos Def works in the same vein as always, staying true to his tastes and simply doing what he feels (which could really result in just about anything). Whether he's spitting and whistling over the classic GZA "Liquid Swords" beat on "Crime & Medicine," rap/singing over the JBs-esque jam session "Sun, Moon, Stars," channeling Living Colour's Cory Glover for the frenzied hard-rock howl of "U R the One," or reworking timelessly quotable verses from Run-DMC and Smooth Bee, it's all hip-hop and it's pure Mos Def. | True Magic Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Mos Def - Longer Hair Firstly "The New Danger" Wow! A True masterpiece and you can't go wrong with Black Jack Johnson backing you, namely Will Calhoun, Doug Wimbish and Doc Know, the guitarist from Bad Brains. These are musicians like you have never heard before! Will Calhoun voted Best New Drummer of 1988 by Modern Drummer Magazine's Readers Poll and voted Best Drummer Of 1990 by Rolling Stone Magazine's Critics Poll, need I say more! Will Calhoun's unique blend of improvisational and hard rock drumming. We currently know Will as the drummer of the Grammy award winning Living Colour. Will has recorded and/or toured with diverse artists including B.B. King, Mick Jagger, Jaco Pastorious, Harry Belafonte, Pharoah Sanders, Jack Dejohnette, Paul Simon, Lou Reed, The Allman Brothers, Lauryn Hill, Marcus Miller, Dr.John, Carly Simon, Herb Alpert, Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood, Wayne Shorter (on the Grammy-winning CD "High Life"), Lauryn Hill, and recorded with rappers Run-DMC and Public Enemy. As a producer, player, and songwriter, Will has worked on Herb Alpert's Grammy-nominated CD, Colors.
As a sought-after master of his instrument, the bass guitar, Doug has recorded and performed with a diverse roster of talent over the years. In the summer of 1979 Doug and Skip met drummer Keith LeBlanc. This trio would become the legendary rhythm section behind the hits for Sugarhill Records. They performed on such classics as Grandmaster Flash’s The Message, Rapper's Delight and the Melle Mel album White Lines, and Angie Stones first record Funk You Up. From his early days with Sugarhill records to pioneering work with Tackhead and Living Colour, Doug has also added The Rolling Stones, Mos Def, Depeche Mode, Mick Jagger, Madonna, Jeff Beck, and Seal to his list. He is truly best described as a journeyman. He was asked several times by Mick Jagger to join The Stones but Doug preferred to commit himself to his creative genius and not be shackled by the golden handcuffs presented by The Stones. THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL A REAL MUSICIAN!!
"True Magic" is what it is, true magic and every single track has a new identity and new inspiration. Mos, you have grown beautifully, and have...Longer Hair!

Not his strongest, but... Interesting piece by Mos...CD transitions from some raw hip hop to funk, to mellowed out soul. Diversity is Mos. Not sure that Pharrel's style meshes with Mos'. Regardless if you like Mos for his creativity and diversions from the norm, after a listen or two you'll be pleased that you copped this. At least 4 blazin tracks and another 6 that I'm down with...10 out of 14 works for me. Submitted by Kenny P (The 215) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
CLASSIC- A MUST HAVE In a world where songs about Tattoos, 2 Step, and women rocking their hips is the norm, this album is a breath of fresh air. The introduction songs, True Magic and Undeniable are good. But, the show stopper is Dollar Day. Those lyrics are on fire. I admire Mos Def speaking truth!! We should expect artists to have talent. Unfortunately, many people do not and it is a shame to see the direction in which Hip Hop has traveled. Thank you Mos Def
for trying to redirect the path! Kudos to him!!! Truth be told, I did not know this album as even released. It received no publicity and that is a shame. I am so glad I came across it. This is true HIP HOP. I think the album is in the same arena as Black on Both Side. Another great Classic! Submitted by Reggan (Richmond,VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Garbage I have never heard something this garbage before. He should've just made another movie cause this album and The New Danger were both garbage. Black on both sides was his best album ever. He should've stuck with that style and changed it up a little bit. Submitted by Demetryce01 (Atlanta, GA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

True Magic album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and ...
| | Mos Def Black On Both Sides CD (1999)
True Magic CD music
$11.99 Mos Def, one-half of the much loved Brooklyn duo Black Star, breaks out on his own with the most intense solo debut in hip-hop since THE MISEDUCATION OF LAUREN HILL. Like MISEDUCATION, BLACK ON BOTH SIDES stretches the definition of the genre to incorporate all aspects of music of the African Diaspora, from reggae to jazz, to form a new kind of sound. Def sings, Def raps, Def does all that and then some. The wide scope of the album is most evident by the collaborators he chooses to work with, who run the gamut from the underrated mastermind of a Tribe Called Quest, Ali Shaheed Mohammad, to the wrongly unsung hero of rare groove, keyboardist Weldon Irvine.

| | Nas Hip Hop Is Dead CD (2006)
True Magic songs
$10.45 Title and all, Nas's eighth solo album clearly intends to spark controversy. But what gives Nasir Jones the right to declare that HIP HOP IS DEAD? For one Nas's 5-mic debut album ILLMATIC represents the best of a by-gone era. Since then he's tried to find his place in the ever-evolving genre, flirting with the mainstream to mixed results, all the while mired in beef with former allies and childhood friends as well industry rivals. The fact that HIP-HOP IS DEAD is the product of his teaming with one of those former(?) rivals, Jay-Z, shows that business trumps beef--as Nas emphasizes on track one, "Money Over Bullshit."
The title cut, with its pounding Iron Butterfly beat and nihilistic lyrics, is profoundly provocative. And while the long-awaited collaboration with Jay-Z on "Black Republicans" will inevitably draw attention, Nas shows he's best on his own--doing his Sam Spade impression in the hard-boiled detective story "Who Killed It"; producing an unapologetic swansong to his hood life in "Not Going ...
| | Roots Game Theory CD (2006)
True Magic album
$10.45 Fans who were worried about how the crew's style would mesh with the Def Jam formula will be relieved from the gate, as the intro (an eerily ambient reworking of the Jay Dee-produced "Fantastic" intro) gives way to the upbeat, drum-driven "False Media." Equally relieving to longtime Roots fans is the return of Malik B whose aggressive delivery again provides balance to Black Thought's more measured cadence. On the whole, GAME THEORY contains heavier subject matter; the politics of the day pervade virtually every track, ...

$27.15 At a corner where lounge takes a turn into the bizarre, that's where you'll find Spain's Ana D.. Along with a few co-conspirators, she makes music that is often cheesy (the version of "Mas," better known as the standard "More," delivered over a canned rhythm with a perfectly straight face, making for something akin to an avant-garde experience). But that's true for much of this disc, which opens and closes with music box Chopin and along the way glides through "Satelite ...
