This 2006 sequel to Elton John's revered 1975 outing, CAPTAIN FANTASTIC & THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY, finds the erstwhile Reginald Dwight (the Captain) looking back on the decades between the two albums with his longtime writing partner, Bernie Taupin (the Kid). Continuing the earlier record's autobiographical themes, THE CAPTAIN & THE KID is highly charged with emotion (see "Tinderbox" for a close examination of John and Taupin's up-and-down professional relationship), and the British pop icon unveils some of his most powerfully moving and beautifully spare vocal and piano performances in years, which can be sampled on the poignant, achingly minimal single "The Bridge." This introspective atmosphere stands in sharp contrast to John's giddy turn on the Scissor Sisters' Bee-Gees-like "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'," which topped the U.K. charts shortly before THE CAPTAIN's release, and helped to prove that he remains a vital and dynamic musician more than 30 years into his incredibly accomplished career.

Elton John Captain & The Kid Songs Captain & The Kid Music Review Average Rating: (3.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews It was just ok for me! Honestly, the man is a brilliant musician and anything he and Bernie conjure up is usually worthy of the investment; but of his more recent efforts starting with say "Sleeping with the Past", this one and the last one, Peachtree Road are not up to his standards. Certainly I don't purchase these expecting the greatness of his earlier works; chiefly in chronological order "Tumbleweed Connection", "Madman Across the Water", "Honkey Chateau", "Yellow Brick Road" and "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy"; but a few in recent years while not up to those standards have been decent. "Big Picture", "Sleeping with the Past", "Songs from the West Coast" and "Made in England" were all pretty good! Well anyway... having said that, even a bad Elton John is better than most of the crap out there today! Submitted by mheinen3 (Oklahoma City, OK, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Consistent The last effort 'Peachtree Road' was feeble, so my expectations were low. This album has all the qualities of classic Elton. Melodies that stay in your head, lyrics that have some feeling, and production that focuses the songs rather than clutters them. This is Elton proving himself rather than cliched material, which is he apt to put out, when freewheeling. Submitted by mrasnoble (Staffordshire, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Captain's Back! It's been 31 years since Elton became Capt. Fantastic. In this follow-up to the greatest concept album of all-time, Elton and Bernie revert back to simplicity and what made them unarguably the greatest writing tandem in music history. This modern day part-two of the original album might not have the wall to wall punch the first one did, but it is about as good as you could expect. Matching the originals' concept, spunk, and originality is by all means impossible anyway. Submitted by Jason Glover (Mobile, Alabama, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Not so Fantastic, Captain Actually it's More Brown Dirt Cowboy, i.e. it doesn't even touch the landmark album from the 70s. (Speaking of which, Elton hasn't put out a decent album since 1976's "Rock of the Westies" although "The One" from the early 90s had its moments.) While this CD has lots of Elton's great piano that is reminiscent of his classic 70s work, the lyrics are below average and at times just plain embarassing. Having said that, I will admit that the material does improve with each listening. The best tunes are the first five ones, the middle songs drag the album down, and the last two regain some steam. Overall, not a bad album. The production is crisp and organic even thought Sir Elton's voice sounds like he was fighting a cold in a few places. But while it does try to lasso in the feeling and sounds of "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy", it ends up being a pale imitation.
