| | Richard Band Glaser It's Inspiring CD Richard Band Glaser Discography of CDs
Since 1999, the Richard Glaser Band has been hard at work establishing a new set of standards for the Los Angeles jazz scene. Recently presented by Los Angeles Magazine as part of the guest line-up for their 8th Annual Best of LA® gala at the Pacific Design Center, the band has made the most of its reputation as a classy and original troupe, performing at such premiere music and nightlife destinations as Crustacean in Beverly Hills, the Greystone Mansion, the Santa Monica Playhouse, the Geffen Playhouse, Traxx at Union Station, the Hotel Cafe and Toppers in Santa Monica. Comprised of pianist/songwriter Richard Glaser, bassist Russ Turner and drummer Mark San Filippo, the band can attribute much of its success to its rich and spiritual devotion to straight-ahead jazz -- a fine blend of intimate ballads, fresh improvisations and swelling, blues-tinged arrangements crafted by music virtuoso and frontman Richard Glaser. Now joined by up-and-coming vocalist Mary Akpa and trumpeter Eric "The Ambassador" Richardson, the band has added a lyrical component to its singular approach to jazz that is creating instant song classics out of finely tuned compositions. In 2006, the band released its fourth album, "It's Inspiring", an eight-song CD of new and re-vamped fan favorites such as "I Can See the Sadness", "A Royal Presence" and "My Dream Is". $14.95 Many people think of smooth jazz as something that didn't start until the 1980s, but arguably, smooth jazz started around 1966-1968 with the overtly commercial, pop-drenched albums that guitarist Wes Montgomery recorded during the last few years of his life. Love it or hate it, Montgomery's more commercial output had a major impact on Peter White and many other guitarists who have contributed to smooth jazz (including George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Earl Klugh, Chuck Loeb, and Henry Johnson). Musically, a lot has changed since the '60s, but the more things change in music, the more they inevitably stay the same -- and 2009 found White (like Montgomery 41, 42, and 43 years earlier) still struggling with a desire to improvise and a desire for mass acceptance (the thing that jazz, for the most ...

She shared stages with many legendary artists such as Jackson Browne, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Ponies,Jennifer Warnes, Mary McCaslin and others. In 1964 & 65 she sang in a bluegrass band with John, Bill & Alice McEuen (John then took Jackson Browne's place in the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and the rest is history) and then formed a duo with Kathy Smith called the Greasy Mountain Butterballs which toured Vietnam in the fall of 1966. Upon returning, she opened the show for numerous artists at the Troubadour and Ash Grove in Hollywood. In the spring of 1967, Penny rode up to San Francisco on the back of a Harley motorcycle and decided to stay in the bay area for a while. During the "Summer of Love", Penny played at the Big Sur Folk Festival and recorded her first album, "Penny's Arcade", for Buddha Records. $16.69 KölnMusik Big Band - Cologne Concert Big Band»My, my, my, what a great band!« (Marlena Shaw)The Cologne Concert Big Band was founded in 1992 at the Cologne Philharmonie. The Orchestra is set up as a classical big band with five saxophones, five trumpets, four trombones, piano, bass and drums. The musicians of the Cologne Concert Big Band are all renowned jazz musicians, who influenced the European music-scene of the Sixties, as well as young musicians, who have already found world wide recognition in various musical formations. The Cologne Concert Big Band performs in the tradition of the great jazz orchestras. The repertoire consists of contemporary compositions as well as legendary swing titles. What people have to say about theCologne Concert Big Band: »Only a big band with uncompromising musicians tries to resist commercial madness. It so happened in Cologne’s Gloria Theatre. Of all cities it could actually only happen in Cologne…«(Sven Ferchow | Musicoutlook) »Forty years ago the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland-Big Band showed how to gain a big fan community not only through top musicians, but also through an individual line of arrangements, which were of a quality and standard of its own. In the same manner the Cologne Concert Big Band has achieved – in just a few years – to find its own profile. The Cologne Concert Big Band stands for a musical program line unmistakably of its own, like one could find in the big bands of Duke Ellington, like they came into existence in the orchestras of Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, like they moulded the orchestras of Artie Shaw. The big sounding names of the »History Of Jazz« are gathered together whenever the Cologne Concert Big Band goes on stage. With the orchestra’s own soundand a number of arrangements especially written for them, the musicians represent a steady dimension in the landscape of the jazz orchestras…«(Dr. Robert von Zahn | Joseph Haydn-Institut) »A lot of fans will still vividly remember January 15, 1993. On this day the widely observed debut of a jazz orchestra took place, that in the meantime has established itself among the best-known bands in Germany’s concert halls. Years of continual work with a lot of concerts have paid its dues. The Cologne Concert Big Band is a trade name, most of all in its place of origin, the Cologne Philharmonie. Annually the concerts of the Cologne Concert Big Band are an event in its own concert hall, to which the jazz fans are looking forward. Under the direction of Jerry van Rooyen the ensemble matured into an orchestra with a definite sound of its own.«Accompanying well-known jazz vocalists has become a cherished tradition for the CCBB.
