| | B-Tribe Fiesta Fatal! CD (1994)
Foundsound CD music
$9.59 The delirious "Intro" sets the stage for what's to come: murky synth washes are gently led into the sunshine by the sudden magisterial arrival of the flamenco guitar. The title track is a rousing instrumental that fuses techno with samplings of the Irish traditional ballad, "She Moved through the Fair" (referred to as "Belfast Child"), with a haunting vocal over a mix of percussion elements, synthesizer pads, and more flamenco. (Imagine Gypsy Kings mixing an album with Deep Forest). The track appears twice more, as a reprise and extended club remix. ...

| | Essential Winter's Solstice CDs (2005)
Foundsound songs
$14.85 Windham Hill's successful A Winter's Solstice series started during the label's first year in 1985, and has continued at roughly a new volume every two or three years, each installment containing a bright wintry blend of classical music, reimagined hymns, chiming carols, and atmospheric compositions that have since garnered the name new age. This two-disc set picks some of the best and brightest moments from the series' first eight volumes, including David Qualey's guitar arrangement of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," Liz Story's piano rendition of "Greensleeves," harpist Lisa Lynne's "Northern Lights," and guitarist W.G. Snuffy Walden's sad, haunting "Moon Lake" on disc one. Disc two offers up the Modern Mandolin Quartet's take on "Trepak," drawn from Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker Suite," William Coulter's lovely "Rain into Snow," and Darol Anger's reshaping of the traditional "I Saw Three Ships." The music on these two discs is beautiful, soothing, even redemptive, and it all seems as natural as a sky full of stars. ~ Steve Leggett

| | Bjork Vespertine CD (2001)
Foundsound album
$6.35 VESPERTINE was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.
Bjork's first non-soundtrack album since HOMOGENIC is positively pastoral compared with that release's experimental electronic textures. Swathed in strings and laced with beautiful choral arrangements, VESPERTINE has more in common with SELMASONGS, echoing that DANCER IN THE DARK soundtrack album's meandering melody lines, while smoothing out and adding an ethereal sheen to the more angular approaches of the singer's previous work.
Here the idiosyncratic Icelander lets loose with her full range of vocal stylings, though even her most innocent, little-girl-lost persona can't hide her steely intelligence. The album-opening "Hidden Place" starts with foreboding electronic rhythms--it's about unspoken or unfulfilled desires, and it's simultaneously exotic-sounding and dripping with melancholy, a mood that persists until the gently cathartic "Undo," with its mantra-like line "It's not meant to be a strife/It's not meant to be a struggle uphill." Though VESPERTINE's textures might ostensibly seem smooth and seamless, beneath the surface Bjork's emotions run raw and exposed, ...
| | Robert Fripp Equatorial Stars CD (2005)
Foundsound CD music
$12.95 When Robert Fripp & Brian Eno first collaborated in the 1970s, they had already made art-rock history with King Crimson and Roxy Music, respectively. Nevertheless, they broke further ground by creating some of the earliest examples of ambient music over the course of two classic mid-'70s albums. Some three decades down the line, after the music world had long been ...

| | John Daniel Winters Sinister Dextera CD (2007)
Foundsound CD music
$10.15 This is virtuoso guitar, mixed with Ableton Live software, a dynamite combination. For electronica fans, "Skitzo" is a good track to start with. For acoustic guitar fans, "Christos" is another goodie. For returning John Winters fans, they are all good, but as usual, all different. Your mileage may vary from track to track. The last number, “Struggle for Love in a Dream”, is very different and not a guitar piece at all. Check it out. It's an original composition by John, using Notion software, which allows the composer to build an entire musical piece, note by note, using samples from the London Symphony Orchestra and other sources. ...
