A gifted and highly original songwriter, singer, and guitarist, Adam Hunter draws from a deep well of inspiration in his music, combining folk, rock, funk, and jazz with Brazilian rhythms and moods to create a unique blend of sound. Born and raised in Seattle, Adam comes from a line of talented musicians. But for many years it seemed as if he future was as a long-distance runner - until an untimely injury put an end to that dream. Instead he went to live in Brazil, taking up the invitation of an exchange student he'd befriended, and the experience changed his life. During his two years there, he immersed himself in Brazilian culture and music. He traveled across the country, from the bristling, huge cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo to the rich jungle of the Amazon. Returning to Seattle, he began playing music avidly, gradually developing his distinctive vocal and songwriting style, drawing from the strands of his influences to create something different and completely fresh. The magic he weaves is evident on his debut CD, Unfolding Time, where samba and bossa nova, funk and jazz mingle with the berimbau, and the listener is transported to a place where the world is new. | | Behroozinia Barbat CD (2007)
Unfolding Time songs
$18.99 The L.A. Times describes Behroozinia's work as "spectacular musicianship." Hossein Behroozinia was born on June 11, 1962 in Tehran, Iran with a heart and soul for music. At the early age of nine he was accepted into Tehran's Conservatory of Music, where the roots of his love for the Tar, under the supervision of Reza Vohdaney, and the Oud under the guidance of Mansour Nariman, germinated. Soon, eagerness and aptitude awarded him the chance to advance his cultivation by being introduced to the Persian radif (repertoire) of Mirza Abdullah by the famed Mohammad Reza Lotfi. Behroozinia's blossoming talent became apparent immediately, so much so, that even as a young man, seventeen, he was asked to instruct at the prestigious Centre of Preservation and Propagation of Music, where he flourished. Opportunities and advancements promptly ensued and he humbly accepted the position of Director of Music Production, followed by Director of Music Education, which evolved into Chairman of the Board. Even though demands on his time were vast, Behroozinia never forgot the joy of learning and offered to teach the ancient lute at Tehran's Conservatory to enthusiastic apprentices. To this day, and still handcuffed by a demanding ...
| | Miraj A Moon Note CD (2007)
Unfolding Time album
$16.15 MIRAJ writes and sings a cappella music for Shabbat, Rosh Hodesh and other sacred times.MIRAJ is an acronym of our names: Margot, Rayzel, Juliet. MIRAJ is a blending of harmony and a weaving of friendship. MIRAJ offers songs for prayer, for meditation, for fun. WHAT DO THE CRITICS SAY?"MIRAJ belts, croons, warbles, and whispers."" They sound like the Jewish Roches.""!a musical dvar torah!""!a toe tapping, finger snapping tour de force!"The MIRAJ Story MIRAJ is a creative collaboration between three Jewish leaders and educators: Rabbi Margot Stein, Rabbi Geela Rayzel Raphael, and Juliet Irene Spitzer. The three women met many years ago in a Hebrew grammar class as students at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. They formed a study group to help overcome the monotony of the course, and soon found themselves laughing and munching on chips as much as studying. The three later began working together on a book about Jewish women's rituals. During retreats to work on the book, they began to sing together-all had been singers and songwriters before meeting-and realized how well their voices blended together in harmony. Then singer-songwriter Linda Hirschhorn asked them to open for her at a local concert, and MIRAJ was born."We have met every Tuesday each week since then for rehearsal, but really it's more like lunch, life and laughter," says Rabbi Raphael. Commenting that it is the group's "exquisite good fortune to have this sacred, weekly time together," Juliet Spitzer adds that the women "sustain each other in ways that defy simple description." The members of MIRAJ have become close friends, supporting each other through subsequent childbirths-they have 8 children between them, ranging in age from 1 to 17-as well as the deaths of family members, job transitions, health issues, and other life changes. The group's songs sometimes come from these life events-the crisis or celebration of the moment. The women write richly harmonic original compositions for Jewish life rituals, Shabbat and holidays, as well as songs about Biblical heroines and events and new interpretations of traditional liturgy. Their focus is on developing songs that can make a service more powerful and inclusive of women's experience-what Rabbi Raphael calls a "feminist transformation of Judaism through songs, ritual writing and prayer."The women somehow manage to make time for their music in the midst of very busy professional careers and family lives. Says Rabbi Raphael, "Music seems ...
