By 2006, goth/death/doom ensemble Draconian had two critically acclaimed albums under their metal-studded belts, and nearly a dozen years of experience overall (most of it spent shopping demo after demo to record companies in the late '90s), but they weren't quite ready to produce an entire album's worth of new songs. So the Swedish septet decided to make a small compromise with their next release for Napalm Records, The Burning Halo, by recording three brand new tracks, re-recording three more from their 1999 demo, The Closed Eyes of Paradise, and rounding everything out with a pair of covers. Luckily, the resulting patchwork still made for a very convincing, nearly seamless proper album, thanks to the band's deep stores of inspiration, super-sized song-lengths, and the quality of their unused back catalog. The dramatically titled "She Dies" gets the ball rolling in fittingly depressing fashion, via laconic harmonies, gradually unfurling heavier guitar crunch, sweeping keyboards, delicate piano, and the "beauty and the beast' interchange between vocalists Lisa Johansson and Anders Jacobsson. Along with subsequent behemoths "Through Infectious Waters" and "The Dying" (both more dynamically varied), its power lies not only in these sharp contrasts of dark and light, but also Draconian's uncommon ability for draping luxurious orchestrations over such coarse death metal granite. The same is true for the trio of reworked older gems that follow, including the comparatively speedy and concise highlight "Serenade of Sorrow" (just five minutes!), the especially surprising "The Morningstar" (featuring a frenzied blast-beat passage), and the mold-breaking "The Gothic Embrace," which piles on some electronic beats and spoken vocals from Jacobsson. The album wraps up with two covers: the first being a stylistically suitable cover by obscure band Ekseption called "On Sunday They Will Kill the World" and the second a decidedly misplaced romp through Pentagram's "Forever My Queen," which, if nothing else, sees Draconian fulfilling their doom community service. That final sore thumb notwithstanding, though, The Burning Halo rolls so incredibly smoothly that many listeners may not even realize its mixed and matched origins, and therein lies its unexpected triumph. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Burning Halo Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars)  Very Interesting
First of all, I see myself as a conservative black metal fan, so I’m not really used to this kind of music. I found this album by accident, but I have to admit this is really good. I especially liked tracks 2, 4 and 6 of this album. In a few words, “the burning halo” is a semi- doom/death metal album with some noticeable gothic elements. If you are a music fan, this album would be a great addition to your collection.

 Great Work
Great music created by draconian once again. But i was kind of dissapointed by the first few tracks of this album.. but the later half is Amazing. Song like "The Morning Star" is a perfect defination of Gothic/Death Metal. You should go for this one

Hobos are homeless wanders—too curious to become barnacles on anything that limits or controls their travels. They're also, in our collective imagination, sort of old-fashioned, dusty, and romantic. Maybe even a bit joyously melancholy.Those are decent descriptions of Ian and Teague Alexy, brothers who have traveled the U.S.A. in both geography and song. Teague grew up in hip-hop groups before briefly being part of San Diego's singer/songwriter scene. Ian learned guitar through metal then The Grateful Dead before studying and playing jazz. They grew up in Philadelphia and South Jersey, lived separately in Boston, Vermont, and California, and reunited in Duluth, Minnesota. Their bodies are settled, but their souls--and their guitars, harmonicas, and uniquely resonant voices--roam free as they draw inspiration from experience.Duluth’s music scene is defined by passionate struggle--so far away from Los Angeles, Nashville and even Minneapolis (150 miles to the south) that trendy expectations or conventional thought just don’t exist. Artists like Dave Van Ronk and The Specials influence the artists who subsist in local dives--there are no high-paying resort gigs to tempt them into John Mayer or Blink-182 territory. Duluth's bars are where the Alexy brothers stripped down their sound: their dirty blues stomps and heart-wrenching country ballads emerged when their own musical travels found a shared sense of beautiful grit in Duluth's well-traveled soul.Three years ago Ian and Teague wrote a few songs perfect for playing on a northern-Minnesota front porch, recorded the tunes at home, and quietly released the collection as The Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank, their self-titled debut album.
