Solo in Rio 1959 stands as a classic in the massive Luiz Bonfa catalog. Originally issued on the Cook label -- named for its owner, famed audio engineer Emory Cook -- it remained a favorite of the guitarist's throughout his lifetime. The Emory Cook Collection is housed and managed by the Smithsonian and as such, Folkways is able to re-release this masterpiece on CD with many added treasures -- there is an additional half-hour of music on the CD. The original featured 17 cuts. The new version contains 32, including an early version of "Samba de Orfeu." While it is true that it is the guitarist and composer's most famous composition and he recorded it many times, this is the only one on solo guitar. This is the first time it appears anywhere. Also included are two versions of the celebrated "Manha de Carnaval." The second read is a more up-tempo and shorter version that is breathless in its beauty. Other well-known Bonfa compositions that have alternates here are "Perdido de Amor," "Sambolero," "Quebra Maer," and "Luzes do Rio." Another gem is the startling "Prelude to an Adventure in Space," with its hard swinging samba that transmutes into a dirge-like bolero on a dime. Solo in Rio 1959 offers an early hearing of Bonfa as fully developed, in possession of a stunning range of styles and techniques, all of them employable in the service of the song. The deep lyricism and harmonic richness of Bonfa's playing is unlike anything else before or since. Solo in Rio 1959 is a historic release, and one that will hopefully alert an entirely new generation to the work of this master of the guitar. In addition to the beautifully remastered music in this package, there is a fine biographical and musicological essay by Anthony Weller. ~ Thom JurekThe Wire (p.72) - "[A] mixture of intellectual rigour and sensuality that dovetails neatly with a well-tailored caipirinha." Down Beat (p.58) - "[T]his is a little gem of subtle sambas and natural eroticism that seems to go to the heart of the Brazilian ideal with a refreshing and unfiltered purity." Solo In Rio 1959 CD music
$14.45 Whether newly written, as with the Morris-style "A Calling-On Song," or familiar ballads, the songs are uniformly excellent, as are the performances. This lineup actually disbanded immediately upon completing the album and never performed live, but HARK! THE VILLAGE WAIT is regardless one of the finest British folk-rock albums ever.
Steeleye Span's debut album, 1970's HARK! THE VILLAGE WAIT--a "wait" being a medieval village band--is a landmark of British folk-rock, a folk supergroup equivalent to the legendary Masked Marauders. Ashley Hutchings ...

| | Todd Rundgren Something/Anything? CDs (1972)
Solo In Rio 1959 songs
$9.85 Classics like the enormous hit "I Saw the Light" and the power-pop mainstay "Couldn't I Just Tell You" abound, alongside odder tracks like the homage "Wolfman Jack" and "Song of the Viking." Side four is a loose studio jam with a small army of pals, featuring the magnificent "Hello It's Me" alongside much goofier material like "Some Folks Is Even Whiter Than Me." Rundgren would often succumb to his indulgent tendencies in some of his later '70s efforts, yet SOMETHING/ANYTHING? perfectly balances his unique sense of experimentation with his impeccable grasp of song and production craft. Though he made many fine musical statements, this remains Rundgren's pop music masterpiece.

Solo In Rio 1959 songs
$7.99 A moving story involves not only enticing storylines and magical words that take the listeners for a ride, but also an effective storyteller that interprets and sets them up on that adventure. A musical, emotional adventure is exactly what storyteller John Scheaffer does with his band, Ceramic's debut, self-titled EP. In 2003, Scheaffer picked up his homemade recordings and took them to New York where he teamed up with producer Charles Newman who had just wrapped up Magnetic Field's i (Nonesuch) and Quicksand's Walter Schriefels' The Walking Concert (Some Records). "Charles has a great sensibility in helping the musician capture the essence of a song," Scheaffer explains. This is apparent in "Down ...

| | Will Clipson Awakening To God CD (2007)
Solo In Rio 1959 music CDs
$11.49 The Awakening to God CD describes a gentle spiritual path on which we are drawn by loving Spirit towards our highest good, rather than being driven by outside forces. Based on The Book of Uncommon Prayer, the material is designed to be read and spoken. Listeners have reported feeling a powerful internal shift into the very presence of God. Each track is designed to stand alone as an aide to personal prayer and meditation. Together they form a blueprint for spiritual awakening and living a joy filled life. The CD Awakening to God teaches the listener how to recognize the action of God in their own lives and how to cooperate with it. The rewards are compassion, forgiveness, healing and the unleashing of miracles in the life of the listener. Using a mixture of deeply moving poetry and concise explanation, the CD reinforces the fact that we are connected to God with a bond that can never be sundered. It helps the listener find the silence within and be guided by the still, small voice of Spirit. The book and CD are intentionally tradition neutral, emphasizing a loving, ever present creator, rather than any particular theology.Spirit is always ready to intervene directly in your life to heal your body, emotions, mind, relationships and perceptions. You need only ask and accept. God knows exactly what you need for your spiritual development. Complete healing and freedom awaits you. When you accept the first healing, another appears, then another and then ...
