Jinsei Zassou/Omokageno Otaru CD music
$10.55 Love's a Real Thing is an excellent introduction into the wild sound world of West Africa in the '70s. As Ronnie Graham points out in his superb liner notes, the '60s were a time of assimilation for much of the popular music of Africa. Many bands were playing a hybrid of Latin and African music typified by the Congolese rhumba of Franco & OK Jazz. The '70s were a different bag, though, with the heavy electric sounds of Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Cream, and others seeping into the consciousness of a new generation of Africans who were also contending with their own emerging sense of identity. The results are raucous, ...

| | Rick Waldron Heart Of The Matter CD (2008)
Jinsei Zassou/Omokageno Otaru music CDs
$11.39 Here's what others are saying:"it’s not quite anything I can classify, and it is perhaps the most oddly enjoyable record I’ve heard in long time."Earshot Jazz - March 2009"..Waldron is an accomplished guitarist, bassist, and keyboardist, and he puts all of these talents (as well as many others) to good use throughout The Heart of the Matter. Waldron’s piano work is best displayed during “Haveh”, which finds the musician playing a pretty melody with multiple note flourishes. Waldron also adds melodic bass lines to this piece, which sometimes brings to mind the jazz McCoy Tyner and Ron Carter created together. Except in this instance, Waldron is playing both Tyner and Carter’s roles, which is quite a feat indeed. Perhaps Waldron’s most many-hat-ed work can be found on one titled “Gliding”. With this one, the multi-instrumentalist plays sweet acoustic guitar, as well as percussion, glockenspiel, and trombone! Man, is there anything this man can’t do? While Waldron clearly has the ability to put on a one man show, he is also assisted by a few other fine musicians in various spots during this 8-song release. Although this CD’s title track starts off with a gentle piano riff, much like the kind heard throughout “Haveh”, it soon evolves into a funky groove that features Anne Drummond on flute, Thomas Marriott on trumpet, and most prominently, Tim Miller at the congas. This is a great piece that hearkens back to the time when jazz fusion was still fresh and Miles Davis was leading this charge into the new. In fact, Marriott’s trumpet even sounds a little bit like Davis’ iconic work. Although jazz is Waldron’s musical forte, one called “Highland March” offers a particularly pleasant, unexpected surprise. It moves to a modified military beat, as Drummond offers fighting flute and piccolo sounds. Waldron once again colors this track with glockenspiel, but also adds Hammond organ to its mix. Waldron composed all of these pieces, except for his swinging take on Kern/Hammerstein’s ...
