Tributee: Earth, Wind & Fire. The revived Stax label marks its 50-year anniversary with a tribute album to one of the best-loved bands in modern R&B. Among the artists performing their interpretations of Earth, Wind & Fire favorites are the singer Angie Stone, who channels Aretha Franklin on her rendition of "Be Ever Wonderful," the fiery Chaka Khan, who tears up "Shining Star," and the nu-soul diva Meshell Ndegeocello, whose version of "Fantasy" is almost a match for the original. Interpretations: Celebrating the Music of Earth, Wind and Fire collects ten classic EW&F tracks as interpreted by some of R&B's finest practitioners. Released on Stax, this better than average tribute album works pretty well, with contemporary gospel heavyweight Kirk Franklin offering up an impeccable, if nearly identical rendition of "September," while Chaka Kahn sexes up "Shining Star" with an "Alphabet Street"-era Prince-inspired backbeat and Me'Shell NdegeOcello puts a trippy, alt rock spin on "Fantasy." ~ James Christopher Monger Interpretations: Celebrating The Music Of Earth, Wind & Fire Music Interpretations: Celebrating The Music Of Earth, Wind & Fire Songs | 1. | Shining Star - Chaka Khan |

| Interpretations: Celebrating The Music Of Earth, Wind & Fire Music Review Average Rating: (3.4 out of 5 stars) Pretty Good... First off this CD deserves your attention because of the artists present. These are some of the truly talented folks that in most cases go unnoticed. That in itself makes this CD something to consider. What drives the whole effort home is what these artists have managed to do here, specifically the covers done by Angie Stone, Musiq Soulchild, Lalah Hathaway, and Mint Condition. Angie Stone is her usually classy self, in that Gladys Knight sort of way she has been perfecting for some time now. Musiq really proves he can sing just about anything. Lalah Hathaway, one of my favorites is brilliant here as is Mint Condition. For once we have a tribute CD that isn't crammed full of current, trendy, or big name artists who were asked to contribute just for the sake of selling more records. Never mind that in most cases all those more “popular” artists are all wrong for the type of material being covered. The perfect example of this was the “So Amazing: An All-Star Tribute To Luther Vandross “ CD. Oh well, also check out Dwele and Ledisi also. Here is a nifty collection of mainly underdog artists that really shines. Submitted by Marcusj_j (Aurora, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
4 EWF lovers First thought is that here´s another tribute record with all what that means... but it´s not! Yes it is the songs of EWF but it´s performed by the best of artists and not just the biggest. If you like the old funky EWF you will love Chaka Khan in Shining Star. Do you like those sweet songs of EWF you will not be disapointed the way Lalah Hathaway takes Love´s Holiday way to heaven... Something really worth listening to I first came across this when I saw Kirk Franklin music video for his rendition of September, which I think is out of this world.
It really is a great album, with such a unique mix of artists. Give it a shot - Earth, Wind and Fire are so amazing and they were involved in this. Submitted by Sarah (New York, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
