Additional Footage; Soundtrack English; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re Based on the book AN AMERICAN HAUNTING by Brent Monahan, this horror movie uses a current-day setting (the year 2006) as a framing device for a ghost story dating back to 1817 Tennessee. Inspired by manuscripts documenting the only spirit-caused death in U.S. history, the film stars accomplished actors Sissy Spacek and Donald Sutherland as the mother and father of Betsy Bell (Rachel Hurd-Wood), an adolescent girl tormented by a mysterious spirit haunting the Bell family home. The spirit is thought to have been sent by Mrs. Batts, a witchlike neighbor who, after having a bitter dispute over property rights with Betsy's father, John Bell, put a curse on John and his daughter. Even though John Bell was the one at fault, it is his daughter who bears the heaviest burden of this spell, being thrown about her room nightly, slapped, and even sexually abused by the mystical force in question. Most of the film takes place in the home, where Betsy's parents, a local priest, and a local schoolteacher (with whom she has a flirtatious relationship) try their best to exorcise the demons away. While the film never fully explains what the spirit is or where it came from, it does propose one disturbing theory near the end that involves the hysterical nature of young female sexuality. But despite being used as a means to connect the present-day story with the 1817 events, this theme is only vaguely hinted at as the story unravels. Theatrical Release: May 5, 2006

American Haunting Movie Review Average Rating: (2.6 out of 5 stars) Scary!!!... Set in 1818 on a farm in Tennasee and based on a true story, this non-fiction chiller tells the story of a wealthy farm family who are terrorized by an evil poltergeist, who is known as The Bell With, and it's focus is on John Bell and his 12 year-old daughter, Betsy Bell. I DON'T KNOW WHAT POSSESSED ME TO WATCH IT! An interesting but flawed, and inconclusive movie. At least it has some restraint, and uses atmosphere effectively. The best thing about it is Adrian Biddles' cinematography. Who else could pan a camera across an innocent school yard scene and make it so disconcerting and disorientating. The guy is brilliant. Give it a go, but don,t expect miracles. Submitted by David Martin (Mt. Martha, Australia.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Left you with questions. I didn't think this movie was as good as I thought it was going to be. It did make me jump a few times, but I thought the storyline was confusing at times. The ending left with no real explanations & still had you asking questions about the whole situation. I did however, like the fact it was based on theories of real life. An American Haunting... “An American Haunting” is an unfortunate attempt to tell a very captivating story. Director Courtney Solomon fails miserably. The only redeeming qualities of the film are the impressive cinematography from Adrian Biddle and the performance of Donald Sutherland. Everything else is just so-so or terrible. The film leads you to the point where you are willing to accept any scenario as the source of the haunting – any scenario other than the one they hand you. As for the bad – and, oh, how there is bad – the ending is the single worst part of the film. What we are led to believe is a genuine haunting turns out to be the tortured soul of a girl who was sexually molested by her father? Give me a break. I know all about the Bell Witch story and that has never been proven by anyone, only speculated. And, all of the material I have researched led me to believe that it was nothing but rumor. John Bell loved his daughter. And, even if he didn’t, the fill does not do an accurate job of showcasing the different sides of John Bell – not enough to let us accept that ending with anything other than hostility. And what was the point of the bloody sheets out of nowhere? Tasteless and unnecessary. I also disliked the way in which the haunting itself was handled. How many times must we watch creepy little dead kids walk around before it loses its shock value. I also disliked the insane number of times we hear the door creak and watch it slowly open. It would seem like these spirits could find a better way of getting attention. Submitted by Michelle (TN. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$9.85 In 1607, three ships sailed across the Atlantic to the shores of what became known as Jamestown, Virginia. The arrival of these Europeans changed forever the history of the native people already living peacefully in this fertile country. Writer-director Terrence Malick, who has been waiting 25 years to tell this story, finally gets his chance in the breathtaking epic THE NEW WORLD. Colin Farrell stars as Captain John Smith, a British mutineer facing execution who finds a new purpose--and a dangerous love--in this new land. Smith falls for the young and beautiful Pocahontas (Q'Orianka Kilcher, in her first major role), daughter of the Indian chief Powhatan (August Schellenberg), laying the groundwork for trouble ahead. The Indians are both fascinated and frightened of the Europeans, not sure whether they ...

$9.69 The sequel to Eddie Murphy's smash hit family comedy, DR DOLITTLE, will certainly not disappoint fans of the first film. Murphy returns as the doctor, who has now garnered some measure of fame for his communication abilities, at least among the animal kingdom. Dolittle is also dealing with his rebellious teenage daughter (Raven Symone). But he drops everything when he's summoned by "The Beaver," the Godfather figure of the local forest, to help the animals preserve their home by stopping an overly aggressive lumber company. To save the forest, Dolittle has to take a trained performing bear (also an endangered species, who is endearingly voiced by Steve Zahn)--and introduce him to the ...

$10.29 Talented Spanish filmmaker Jaume Balaguero's film DARKNESS is a terrifying tale in which an ordinary American family moves to a large, creaky Victorian home in the Spanish countryside that, unbeknownst to them, was the scene of some awful experiments on the night of a total eclipse 40 years before. Teenage daughter Regina (Anna Paquin) decides to investigate after unexplained bruises show up on her younger brother (Stephen Enquist), and her father (Iain Glen) displays oddly enraged and erratic behavior. Although her ...

American Haunting review
$8.25 Zombie movies slip in and out of fashion, but it's always a special occasion when the man who helped turn the undead into a worldwide phenomenon decides to add an installment to his ongoing saga of flesh-eating films. George A. Romero's zombie movies have all appeared in different decades, beginning with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD in 1968, DAWN OF THE DEAD in '78, and DAY OF THE DEAD in '85. Romero skipped the '90s, but a zombie renaissance in the early 21st century (28 DAYS LATER, SHAUN OF THE DEAD) finds him back in the directors chair.
Often seen as allegories for their times, Romero's films have been connected to societal events such as the consumerism of the '70s (DAWN OF ...
