Jazz Icons - Buddy Rich: Live In '78 Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Think You've SEEN Buddy Rich? This may be the definitive Buddy Rich live performance. I own all of the other available BR concerts DVDs, but to me this one really shows off his ensemble perfection and his monstrous chops the best. Why Buddy "was" The World's Greatest Drummer If ever there was a demonstration to prove (as if he needed it) why he was called The World's Greatest Drummer, the Jazz Icons DVD of Buddy Rich at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland on July 14, 1978 is the one that would do it.
With the Band that was known as the "Killer Force" it takes no prisoners and is a complete "rush" from start to finish.
Having convinced Buddy to put Channel One Suite back in the book, it's as if it's played for the very first time, and Buddy's solo on this isn't to be believed!
With three ex-Kenton guys on this Band, Greg Smith, Baritone & Chuck Schmidt, trumpet (who plays lead and can get up there with the best of them)who's playing surpasses anything he ever did on the Kenton Band, and of course the 3rd ex is the tenor dynamics of the late Steve Marcus who is quite mesmerizing.
This DVD rates 10 stars in my book. It is essential to any Big Band collector, and includes super liner notes by Dean Pratt.

Fantastic ! Really great DVD,from start to finish.I was lucky enough to see Buddy and his band giving a superb live performance at Ronnie Scott's around this time, and this is even better than that. The band are really cookin',with Steve Marcus and Bob Kaye in great form, but of course it's Buddy himself who steals the show.Every drummer should own this. A "Must Have" for all jazz fans Fabulous! This video of Buddy's 1978 band ranks among the finest in content, quality and sound of any I have ever seen. This is the way to package jazz on video - the complete concert with nothing left out. The camera work is top-notch with Buddy visible in almost every shot. Here's hoping Jazz Icons issues many more in this series. A bargain! Submitted by Ken (Northern Ohio) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Jazz Icons - Buddy Rich: Live In '78 DVD The release of Jazz Icons is like the unearthing of a musical time capsule - an audio-visual treasure trove of the music that changed the world. From Big Band and Bebop to Dixieland and Cool, it's all here and it all swings. These jazz legends, from Dizzy and Count to Louis and Ella, are the Bachs and Beethovens of our generation. From an educational standpoint this series is a gift to our culture. I'm honored to be a featured part of it, but I'm more thrilled just to sit down and watch it with my grandkids. (Quincy Jones)
With Jazz Icons, TDK presents a DVD series featuring full-length concerts and studio performances by the greatest legends of jazz, filmed in Europe between 1957 and 1978 during one of the most creative periods in jazz history. None of these concerts have ever been released for home viewing before and, in some cases, the material was never even broadcast.
These filmed concerts capture the most pivotal and influential jazz artists of the 20th century in their prime - accompanied by some of the most legendary side-musicians of the day. Some of these recordings were forgotten for nearly 50 years. American company "Reelin' In The Years Productions" have re-discovered and produced them and after being digitally re-mastered from high quality, original masters with excellent sound and film quality, they are now presented on DVD by TDK.
Each of the nine titles in the illustrious series features 60-90 minute performances by Thelonious Monk, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Count Basie, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Buddy Rich or Chet Baker. They were all produced with the full support and cooperation of the artists or their estates, which in most cases contributed rare personal photographs, memorabilia, and forewords. The DVDs are available individually and each comes with a 16-page booklet including an essay written by an authoritative jazz historian.
The Buddy Rich DVD boasts a thunderous 1978 concert taped in Holland and featuring members of Buddy's "Killer Force," the group he would later call "the best band I ever had."
