(1 Customer Review)
Charlie Gracie is usually categorized as a rockabilly singer, though his style was a far cry from the frantic wailing of Charlie Feathers, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, or the other true masters of the form. Gracie had great pipes and could make with a variety of vocal acrobatics in the rockabilly manner, but his material had a polish that was akin to the later teen idols who came out of his home town of Philadelphia, and his records lack the giddy danger of the Southern masters, instead suggesting a place where benign teen pop tried to catch up to what Elvis brought to the charts. Despite all this, Gracie made some fine records during his brief fling with fame, and this disc features 20 sides committed to tape during his tenure with Cameo Records in the 1950s, where he enjoyed his biggest hits. While Gracie would have been served better with more songs like the Elvis-styled "Fabulous," the easy but energetic "Cool Baby," and the swaggering "Just Looking," even glossier and less rockin' tunes such as "Butterfly," "Plaything," and "Yea Yea (I'm in Love with You)" make it clear this guy was miles ahead of Pat Boone, Fabian, and other pretty boys who were starting to clutter the charts around the same time. Given Cameo-Parkway's longtime embargo on CD releases, this is the first digital-era collection of Charlie Gracie's best and best-known work, and while this confirms he wasn't a major artist, there is some pleasing first-era rock to be heard here, and one imagines Gracie could have stayed in the spotlight a few years longer if he'd gotten the treatment his voice deserved. ~ Mark Deming

| Best Of Charlie Gracie 1956-1958 Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) It´s Fabulous If you´re into 50´s rock´n roll and Charlie Gracie is still missing in your record collection, then this album is a must. If you, like me, are a fan, then this album still is a must. Here you´ll find his entire output for the tiny Cameo label which still was opereted from Bernie Love´s kitchen table at the time they signed Gracie, but "Butterfly", his first release for the label sold more than three million copies and put Philadelphia on the map.Cover version by Andy Williams also sold more than a million and actor Tab Hunter covered the b-side, "Ninety-Nine Ways", which gave him a million-seller. Gracie´s follow-uo, "Fabulous" (covered by Paul McCartney a few years back) sold close to a million and Gracie´s third release, "Wanderin´ Eyes"/"I Love You So Much It Hurts Me" became a double-sided hit in Britain, where also the Otis Blackwell composition "Cool Baby" (from the movie "Disc Jockey Jamboree") charted. You´ll find them all here plus some unreleased goodies. Buy it today. Submitted by rocklove_roos (Stromsund, Sweden) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Who Endless Wire CD (2006) Bonus Tracks; England
Best Of Charlie Gracie 1956-1958
$14.29 Neither time, nor the deaths of founding members, nor claims that they'll never play together again seem to stop the legendary Who. On 2006's ENDLESS WIRE, the band's first official studio full-length since 1982's IT'S HARD, Pete Townshend is still folding progressive structures and lofty themes into bombastic, arena-ready rock, while Roger Daltrey belts it out as though it were still 1976. The Who's 2000s-era touring band, including drummer Zak Starkey, bassist Pino Palladino, and keyboardist John Bundrick, lend enough muscle to the musical attack here to recall the Who's glory days, and a host of studio musicians help flesh out and vary the sound.
Surprisingly, all of these elements--Townshend's songwriting, Daltrey's impassioned singing, and the band's tight performances--coalesce to create a remarkably consistent whole. At its best, ENDLESSWIRE resembles the band circa WHO'S NEXT (the synth intro to opener "Fragments," which directly references "Baba O'Reily," is a clear tip-off). In addition to nine new songs, the set also includes the EP WIRE & GLASS ...
