This fine, long out-of-print album by jazz pianist/composer Randy Weston is available again. Long one of jazz best (and most underrated) composers, Weston was one of the first American jazz musicians to investigate and embrace the African influences in jazz. (He lived in Africa for a time in the 1970s.) A spare yet melodic, Thelonious Monk-influenced pianist, Weston led a great band in 1964--when AFRICAN COOKBOOK was recorded--featuring the big Texas tenor sax of the late Booker Ervin. The rest of the band plays with inspiration and restraint. Weston weaves the African influence subtly into his inviting compositions--though the influence, Weston might say, was there all along. His tunes are warm, catchy, rich with the flavors of Monk, Duke Ellington and African music. Listening to this album is like sitting down to a sumptuous meal, one you wish to savor.

All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.

Down to the Bone set the stage to expand beyond their jazz-groove scene beginnings on Crazy Vibes and Things. Producer/arranger Stuart Wade leads the same tight community of musicians featured on Spread the Word, including Neil Angilley, Shilts (a best-selling artist in his own right), Paul Turner, Adrian Revell, and Tony Remy. Wade also wrote or co-wrote the CD's ten compositions with Angilley and Shilts. The recording opens with ...

Pavanne For Ahmad
Ahmad Jamal Pavanne For Ahmad CD  (2006) (Import) United Kingdom

African Cookbook music CDs
CD $19.69
Ahmad Jamal's early recording career is given a reasonably in-depth survey on this 18-track, 72-minute collection of material from 1951-1955. The earliest four of these tracks feature him at the head of a trio with guitarist Ray Crawford and bassist Eddie Calhoun, but the remainder of the set (all recorded in 1955) were cut by the lineup with Jamal, Crawford, and bassist Israel Crosby. It might be tamer and more conventional than Jamal's later material, particularly due to the absence of drums (though there are plenty of popping percussion punctuations). It's still highly respectable early cool jazz, with the accent on covers of standards, though there are a few Jamal originals sprinkled in (including one of his most renowned early compositions, the funky "Ahmad's Blues"). Too, this has his interpretation of "Pavanne," which was likely influential on both Miles Davis' "So What" and John Coltrane's "Impressions." Throughout, it's easy to hear why Davis considered Jamal an important musician, as Jamal's style -- swinging, but with a certain amount of clean intellectual precision -- bore obvious connections to the cool jazz Davis and other musicians were also innovating at the time. The liner notes are threadbare, but at least the track listings include personnel details and recording dates. ~ Richie Unterberger Ahmad Jamal leads his long-running trio with electric bassist James Cammack and drummer Idris Muhammad for these 2004 studio sessions. Mixing it up with four standards and five originals, the trio sounds as if they have just completed a several-week tour playing these numbers every night. Jamal begins "I'm Old Fashioned" in a fairly straight-ahead fashion, taking only a few sudden detours near the end of the performance. ...
How To Make A Bad Situation Worse
Mishka Shubaly How To Make A Bad Situation Worse CD  (2007)

African Cookbook songs
CD $11.19  Audio Samples
Mishka Shubaly's first songs were written in a grim series of basement apartments, beginning with an unfinished and unheated basement in his mother's rented duplex in Lafayette, Colorado. Just seventeen, he was working as the night manager of Sonic Burger and attending college full time. 'My dad had just left us, our house had gotten repossessed, and my mom and I were totally broke. I didn't have a dresser to keep my clothes in so I just brought a bunch of green pickle buckets home from work and kept my clothes in them. It worked fine, but I always smelled-- strongly --of pickles.

' The darkness, isolation and chill of that basement in Colorado and the unflappable sense of humor it bred has never left the music of Mishka Shubaly. In August of 2000, Mishka Shubaly recorded 'Thanks For Letting Me Crash' on a four track in his bedroom and began performing live. In the years since, critics have compared him to virtually everyone in the country or indie canons, most notably Johnny Cash, Tom Waits and Nick Cave. But it's still the fans that matter most to Mishka Shubaly. 'Every time I play, somebody comes up to me after the show really wasted, looks deep into my eyes with just incredible sadness, then mumbles something incomprehensible and staggers off. That means more to me than I can say.

' By May, 2003, Mishka had his picture in Fader magazine for being the talent buyer at one of the hottest clubs in ...

Heavy but spacious beats, powerful horns, funky keys and guitar, giving us an irresistible result of sweet voices and raw rhythm. The Dutch/French songstress mixes her favorite sounds of soul, funk, jazz, and 80s pop into tasty sonic delight.

A Dutch girl from Paris, she lived and studied there, first agronomy, then music. She played in the big city for a couple of years with a couple of bands, one of them dedicated to Prince and the thousands of versions of the thousands of songs, and the other one supporting the "crème" of French pop artists (TéTé, La Grande ...
