Lee Morgan was only a tender 19 years of age when he led this 1957 Blue Note date, but his technique surpassed most of the more seasoned trumpeters on the scene. Technically agile and possessed of a bright, clear tone (he clearly belongs to the lineage of Dizzy Gillespie), Morgan shines on CITY LIGHTS, and his sidemen--including saxophonist George Coleman, trombonist Curtis Fuller, and bassist Paul Chambers--are no slouches, either. Strong writing from jazz composer Benny Golson makes this a thoroughly enjoyable hard-bop session. The 2006 reissue boasts beautifully remastered sound.

City Lights album
$8.49 This is part of Blue Note's Collector's Choice series. These are limited-edition pressings of a few thousand copies.
This LP has material from 1961 that for no real reason went unreleased until 1985. One song, "Three Coins in a Fountain," is from the same session that resulted in tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley's famous Workout session with guitarist Grant Green, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The other five numbers -- three obscure Mobley originals, plus "I Should Care" and "Hello Young Lovers" -- are from the previously unheard December 5, 1961 session with the same personnel except for Green. Hank Mobley was in a prime period around this time, and all of his Blue Note recordings are well worth picking ...
| | Donald Byrd Royal Flush: RVG Series CD (1961)
City Lights CD music
$9.39 In the early 1960s, long before he'd pursue a funkier, electric direction, Donald Byrd was one of the leading trumpeters on the American jazz scene. Recorded in autumn 1961, ROYAL FLUSH is hard-swinging (with the baritone sax of Pepper Adams, how could it not be?) and deep-grooving hard bop. It does, however, point to aspects of jazz's future--note the poignant "Requiem," contributed by a young Herbie Hancock (this session's pianist) and the inventive drumming ...

| | Donald Byrd Off To The Races CD (1958) Remastered
City Lights songs
$8.49 Before trumpeter Donald Byrd began his flirtations with fusion, funk, and pop in the 1960s and '70s, he was one of hard bop's most satisfying practitioners. 1958's OFF TO THE RACES is one of his finest dates from the period, and a stellar personnel list (including baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, and pianist Wynton Kelly) helps get things cooking. There is the usual Blue Note assortment of ballads, blues, and up-tempo numbers, but it's the musicianship, particularly the fine, fluid soloing of Byrd and McLean, that makes this a keeper.
From the crackling opening notes of "Lover Come Back to Me," it's clear that Off to the Races is one of Donald Byrd's most invigorating sessions ...
| | Freddie Hubbard Here To Stay CD (1988) Remastered
City Lights album
$8.99 This two-LP set, which was released in 1979 as part of United Artists' Blue Note reissue series, brought back trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's early album Hub Cap, a sextet session with tenor-saxophonist Jimmy Heath, trombonist Julian Priester, and pianist Cedar Walton. Although that session (comprised of four Hubbard compositions, one of Walton's songs, and Randy Weston's "Cry Me Not") is excellent, it is the full album of previously unreleased material from an all-star quintet that is of greatest interest. Hubbard teams up with fellow Jazz Messengers Wayne Shorter (on tenor), Walton, bassist Reggie Workman, and (in Blakey's spot) drummer Philly Joe Jones for some advanced hard bop. Highpoints include the fiery "Philly Mignon" and a strong version of "Body and Soul." ~ Scott Yanow

| | Bobby Hutcherson Happenings CD (1966) Remastered
City Lights CD music
$8.49 HAPPENINGS was vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson's fourth Blue Note release as a leader. Where its predecessors DIALOGUE and COMPONENTS were packed with challenging avant-bop, HAPPENINGS instead brings things down a notch. With pianist Herbie Hancock, drummer Joe Chambers, and bassist Bob Cranshaw on board, Hutcherson keeps the tone fairly light, performing his original compositions (the exception is Hancock's "Maiden Voyage") with a mellow, swinging style that emphasizes modal exploration. The performances are all top-notch, and the album still weighs in as one of the best in Hutcherson's fine catalogue.
Bobby Hutcherson's first ...

| | Lee Lessack I Know You By Heart CD (1999)
City Lights songs
$12.05 The play list for record company executive cum cabaret performer Lee Lessack is like a book of short stories which examine the ins and outs of one of our favorite pastimes and most puzzling conundrums, love and its trappings, especially its darker side. The subject is perfect for Lessack's soft, dedicated delivery. He wears his emotions on his sleeve as he recites the words of songs that are selected for the story they tell, not for their familiarity. It's the character, not the popularity of the song, that matters. Many tunes come from the musical stage. But again, not necessarily the most popular or successful musicals. "Storybook," from the The Scarlett Pimpernel, is done as a lilting serenade, almost Chopin-esque, as Lessack's vocalizing rides atop Boswell's waltzing piano. Stephen Schwartz, who provided ...

| | Belinda Underwood Uncurling CD (2005)
City Lights CD music
$13.29 The debut album from Belinda Underwood, a Portland-based bassist-cum-vocalist, is a surprisingly excellent start, especially for what's essentially an independent release. Underwood exudes authenticity here, moving between upright bass and vocals (and a stretch on the baritone ukulele for good measure). She's slinky and sultry without diving into overblown Eartha Kitt-esque aesthetics. Her voice is breathy, and while her phrasing seems a little slow at times, it's generally used to draw you into the next notes. Her bass playing is similar in its aesthetic, though with a different pitch and timbre. The key to this album is Underwood's choices of pieces -- a half-dozen standards that she re-creates in her own style, and a half-dozen originals that show off her poetry and composition abilities. "World Peace Blues" shows off her scatting abilities at the same time as her apparent love for Marvin Gaye. "Say My Name" shows off a more melodic instrumental side with the ukulele put beside her smoky rendition of a love song. The starting track, "Born to Be Blue," is an old one, but she can put the pathos into it just as well as the old Velvet Fog could. This one might take a little effort to find, but it'll pay dividends once you do. ~ Adam Greenberg
Belinda UnderwoodA Quick HerstoryBelinda's first exposures to music occurred five nights a week while she was captive in her jazz-pianist-mother's womb. With birth, the nightly exposure continued while she napped under the piano in a car seat. After a childhood of violin lessons, harp lessons, orchestras and choirs, music became her choice when she fell in love with the upright bass at age sixteen. In high school she traveled as a bass player (on scholarship) to Australia with the Monterey Jazz Festival Honor Band, and in college she played and traveled with the UC Berkeley Wednesday Band. Singing professionally didn't occur to her until years later when she was playing the bass at the ...
