| | Horace Silver Doin' The Thing At The... CD Horace Silver Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Jazz was going in several distinctive and exciting directions in 1961. One popular route was led by pianist/composer Horace Silver--cordially up-tempo, funky hard bop that brought to the forefront the blues and gospel roots of jazz, often referred to as soul-jazz. The chemistry of Silver's tasty piano and infectious tunes, Blue Mitchell's crackling trumpet, and Junior Cook's hearty tenor saxophone make this cooker of a live session one to cherish.
Recorded live at The Village Gate, New York, New York.
Personnel: Horace Silver; Gene Taylor , Junior Cook, Roy Brooks, Blue Mitchell.

| | Hank Mobley Another Workout: RVG Series CD (1961)
Doin' The Thing At The... CD music
$8.99 This is part of Blue Note's Collector's Choice series. These are limited-edition pressings of a few thousand copies.
This LP has material from 1961 that for no real reason went unreleased until 1985. One song, "Three Coins in a Fountain," is from the same session that resulted in tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley's famous Workout session with guitarist Grant Green, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The other five numbers -- three obscure Mobley originals, plus "I Should Care" and "Hello Young Lovers" -- are from the previously unheard December 5, 1961 session with the same personnel except for Green. Hank Mobley was in a prime period around this time, and all of his Blue Note recordings are well worth picking up. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Freddie Hubbard Here To Stay CD (1988) Remastered
Doin' The Thing At The... music CDs
$8.99 This two-LP set, which was released in 1979 as part of United Artists' Blue Note reissue series, brought back trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's early album Hub Cap, a sextet session with tenor-saxophonist Jimmy Heath, trombonist Julian Priester, and pianist Cedar Walton. Although that session (comprised of four Hubbard compositions, one of Walton's songs, and Randy Weston's "Cry Me Not") is excellent, it is the full album of previously unreleased material from an all-star quintet that is of greatest interest. Hubbard teams up with fellow Jazz Messengers Wayne Shorter (on tenor), Walton, bassist Reggie Workman, and (in Blakey's spot) drummer Philly Joe Jones for some advanced hard bop. Highpoints include the fiery "Philly Mignon" and a strong version of "Body and Soul." ~ Scott Yanow

| | Bobby Hutcherson Happenings CD (1966) Remastered
Doin' The Thing At The... songs
$8.49 HAPPENINGS was vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson's fourth Blue Note release as a leader. Where its predecessors DIALOGUE and COMPONENTS were packed with challenging avant-bop, HAPPENINGS instead brings things down a notch. With pianist Herbie Hancock, drummer Joe Chambers, and bassist Bob Cranshaw on board, Hutcherson keeps the tone fairly light, performing his original compositions (the exception is Hancock's "Maiden Voyage") with a mellow, swinging style that emphasizes modal exploration. The performances are all top-notch, and the album still weighs in as one ...

Doin' The Thing At The... songs
$13.35 Cow Cow Davenport, an important blues and boogie-woogie pianist/singer from the 1920s, was living in obscurity in Cleveland in the early '40s. He could still sing even if his playing was slightly weakened by arthritis that slowed down his right hand. He was frustrated by life and by the fact that his "Cow Cow Blues" was the basis for an uncredited hit record of "Cow Cow Boogie" by Freddie Slack's orchestra. A lawsuit resulted in him getting paid $500 and he began to think about his legacy. Davenport recorded a set of acetate recordings at his home that were not released until this 1997 CD. Some of the music is barely listenable due to the very scratchy surfaces and a few of these performances, particularly three in which he had his wife Peggy Taylor play the right hand ...
| | Carlos Del Junco Big Boy CD (1999)
Doin' The Thing At The... album
$15.89 The first time I heard Carlos Del Junco, I was foreman of the jury which voted him World Champion in the Blues competition at the World Harmonica Festival 1993 in Trossingen, Germany. At the time I had no doubt that this Cuban-born Canadian stood head and shoulders above the other students of overblow pioneer Howard Levy. I was fascinated by how he integrated the frequently over-intellectualized overblow approach with the more rootsy feel of Chicago blues and swing, without any stylistic contradictions and with total conviction. His subsequent CD releases bore witness to his continuing hard work and dedication to his music, and underlined his rare ability to combine technically exemplary harp playing with emotional content. My favorite from his first three CDs is the wonderful “Big Road Blues”, an acoustic duo production with talented guitarist and singer Thom Roberts, and a loving tribute to the giants of pre-war delta blues. I next saw Carlos at the 1998 SPAH Convention in Detroit, where his two short appearances clearly demonstrated his growing musical maturity.

Now he’s back with a new release on his own label, Big Reed Records, entitled “Big Boy”. As the subtitle “Some Recycled Blues and Other Somewhat Related Stuff” would suggest, this CD covers a wide stylistic spectrum, ranging from relatively conventional blues to jazz and world beat. Carlos is accompanied on this outing by a top-line band, of whom the excellent Kevin Breit on guitar, dobro, mandolin and mandola is especially worthy of mention. I won’t go into details about the individual titles except to say they are almost without exception highly listenable. The arrangements and the masterly ...
