Boasting much stronger compositions than the preceding Fools Mate, Chameleon In the Shadow of the Night is regarded as one of Peter Hammill's best albums. Although Hammill is still in piano/acoustic guitar mode, the passion in his vocals is nearly unparalleled. But what separated Hammill from other early-'70s folk-rockers was that he had a knack for injecting art rock into his compositions and singing his mellow songs in a rough (rather expectedly laid-back) style. The opening track "German Overalls" could be compared to David Bowie's early acoustic period, as well as "What's It Worth" (the latter containing flute work that complements Hammill's acoustic strumming nicely). But Hammill successfully slips back into rock territory with "Rock and Rôle," which contains some great, dirty sax work. The album's production is very straightforward (nearly without any studio enhancement), which helps bring out the intensity of Hammill's stark arrangements. Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night could fall into the concept album category, since the theme of growing old seems to be repeated throughout. ~ Greg Prato

Chameleon In The Shadow Of The Night songs
$13.95 One of the best albums ever made about the end of a relationship and the trauma that results, Over is the harrowing document of the failure of a long-term relationship Peter Hammill had been in. With a brief side-step to examine the loss felt by parents when their children move out ("Autumn"), Hammill exposes feelings of guilt, rage, betrayal, attempts at understanding, and attempts at healing. ...
| | Future Now CD (1978) +2 Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Chameleon In The Shadow Of The Night album
$19.79 The Future Now is one of Peter Hammill's best and most disconcerting albums since the mid-'70s. Filled with beautiful piano ballads, strange experiments, and anthemic rock songs, it stands as multi-faceted as the artist -- who, incidentally, shaved half of his facial hair for the eye-catching cover shot. Hammill has never mastered the art of the opening track, and this album marks no exception: "Pushing Thirties" is a bland, surprise-less rock song. Once you pass that gate though, wonders succeed one another in your ears. In the ballad department, "If I Could" shines like a diamond. This beautiful love song about a man who will never be able to keep his wife from leaving would remain a regular feature in Hammill's concerts for the next 25 years, but no later recording matches this studio version. "The Mousetrap (Caught In)" -- the story of an actor performing the same play for the last 30 years -- is another highlight. Unstable fuzz guitar (reminiscent ...

Chameleon In The Shadow Of The Night CD music
$15.15 Peter Hammill's seventh album has been recorded with the same lineup as The Future Now (with the singer handling most instruments,David Jackson on sax, and Graham Smith on violin) but yields very different results. The spirit of experimentation that prevailed on the earlier opus has, for the most part, vanished in favor of tighter mainstream songs. After the slightly-too-sweet opening ballad, "My Favourite," comes "Careering," a jerky rocker that fails to convince. The ...

Chameleon In The Shadow Of The Night music CDs
$9.99 In the late '70s and early '80s, it wasn't uncommon to find punk bands that were enamored of '50s and early '60s rock & roll. The Clash covered the Bobby Fuller Four's "I Fought the Law," and the Ramones were well aware of the contributions of pioneers like Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and Elvis Presley -- not to mention the girl groups, surf rockers and garage bands that emerged in the 1960s. Although Tiger Army wasn't formed until 1995, its work has recalled a time when punk bands showed their affection for early rock & roll. Released in 1999, this self-titled debut album is full of rockabilly influences -- the material is aggressive punk, but aggressive punk that owes a lot to rockabilly. And that's ...

Chameleon In The Shadow Of The Night CD music
$9.55 In 2006, Rhino Records released the two-disc anthology BRIGHTER LATER, which contained a disc of hits by the adult alternative pop star Duncan Sheik, coupled with a second disc of Sheik's darker, moodier material. The following year, the label spun off the first disc, unaltered, as a stand-alone budget-line collection of the singer-songwriter's most popular songs. As a result, those who bought BRIGHTER LATER won't need BRIGHTER, but it's an ...
