| | Alice In Chains Jar Of Flies CD (1994) Extended Play
Into A New Dimension album
$7.59 "I Stay Away" was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.
The CD-Plus version of JAR OF FLIES contains all the tracks on the original album along with lyrics, portions of songs from earlier albums, full-length videos of "I Stay Away" and "No Excuses," video interviews with band members, a complete biography, band photos and clips from radio interviews.
Additional personnel includes: Rebecca Clemons-Smith, Matthew Weiss (violin); Justine Foy (violin, cello); April Acevez (viola); David Atkinson (harmonica); Randy Biro, Darrel Peters (background vocals).
Principally recorded at London Bridge Studio, Seattle, Washington from September 7-14, 1993.
Throughout Alice In Chain's body of work, an aura of menace and evil permeates the songs in a deceptively sinister way. JAR OF FLIES is their second EP (the first was SAP), and although they return to more of an unplugged, Alice In Chains Lite sound (as opposed to their usual waves of crashing distortion and dive-bombing leads), it's far from being a polite, poppy record.
Collectively, the group goes out on a much more experimental limb. "Swing On This" has a faux-jazz groove to it with newest member Mike Inez's stand-up bass goosing along the rhythm section. "Rotten Apple" opens the album with an eerie, foreboding harmonica played through a chamber. As always, front man Layne Staley's lyrics deal with displacement, disillusionment and fighting with one's sense of self, particularly in the moving "Don't Follow." To further liven things, Alice In Chains use a string section as a major facet of "I Stay Away," building it ...
| | Slayer World Painted Blood CDs (2009) With DVD; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Into A New Dimension CD music
$17.57 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, no muss-no fuss blasts of double kick drum, minor key-riffing fury, with an unrelenting intensity that requires little in the way of sonic or textural variation. ...

| | Taproot Blue-Sky Research CD (2005)
Into A New Dimension album
$9.09 Produced by Toby Wright (who helmed Taproot's critically praised "Welcome"), "Blue Sky Research" sees the Ann Arbor-based quartet continuing their musical exploration of hard rock's many textures. The album showcases Taproot's gifts for inventive melodies and thought-provoking lyricism, as is evident in the album's first single, "Calling." "Blue Sky Research" finds the band collaborating with such like-minded artists as Billy Corgan, who shares credit on three of the album's most intriguing songs: "Lost In The Woods," "Violent Seas," and "Promise." Overall, the album displays Taproot's consistently remarkable artistic growth, once again showing them to be among today's finest hard rock outfits.
Michigan rockers Taproot continue to refine their combination of nu-metal and grunge-inspired alt-rock on 2005's BLUE SKY RESEARCH. Building on the sleek Alice ...

| | Yusef Lateef Eastern Sounds CD (1961) Remastered
Into A New Dimension songs
$8.79 This 1961 release may be significant in the vast canon of jazz recordings if only because it predates John Coltrane's forays into Eastern modal music. Coltrane didn't really explore the connection between jazz and Eastern musical styles until A LOVE SUPREME. Certainly, it is widely accepted that Coltrane's 1965 landmark albums, TRANSITION, KULU SE MAMA, and ASCENSION firmly established him as the main practitioner of Eastern influenced modal jazz. However, on Lateef's EASTERN SOUNDS, we hear the tenor man forging new territory years prior to Coltrane's experiments. Indeed, Lateef draws many fine musical parallels between the music of the Orient and American jazz on this outing.
Lateef's experiments are quite successful on this recording, even though the album's conception is somewhat stymied by his mainstream jazz roots. For example, a straight-up (albeit beautiful) version of the standard "Don't Blame Me" seems out of place with Lateef's own wacky compositions. Still, "The Plum Blossom," "Chinq Miau" and the outlandish album closer, "The Three Faces of Balal" are quite compelling, making ...
