Kiss' penchant for make-up was inspired by their downtown New York neighbors the New York Dolls and by Alice Cooper, who was on top of the glam-rock world when Kiss' self-titled debut came out in 1974. Rather than dress in drag as the Dolls did, Kiss fashioned their look on a mix of sci-fi and horror films, and the rock & roll of their youth. They fashioned their music on willful hard-rock arrogance. Several songs on KISS became staples in the group's catalog. "Strutter," about a beautiful woman with a confident swagger, mirrored the attitude of the band, and it contained the first of many incendiary Ace Frehley solos.
The album also contains "Cold Gin," Ace's signature song; "Deuce," with its quintessential sexual posturing and fiery soloing; and "Black Diamond," Paul Stanley's epic tribute to a streetwalker with a hardscrabble life. Kiss' hunger to succeed resulted in some interesting recording choices, such as transforming teen idol Bobby Rydell's "Kissin' Time" into a stomper with singalong choruses typical of early-'70s pop. There's even an instrumental, "Love Theme From Kiss," a showcase for the quartet's musical synchronicity. It was the beginning of a long and influential career.

| | 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Kiss CD (2003) Remastered
Kiss CD music
$9.15 This anthology's focus is on Kiss's rich, '70s period, serving as an excellent sampler for neophytes curious to find out how Kiss has managed to invoke such slavish devotion from their fans. If one is willing to look past the make-up and hoopla, the success of these New York City natives is founded on what is essentially basic rock & roll packed with hooks, straightforward subject matter (i.e. sex), and killer guitar solos provided by one Ace Frehley.
Among the band's classic numbers included here are songs about streetwalkers ("Strutter") and teen ingenues ("Christine Sixteen"), and plenty of cuts loaded with the aforementioned sexual innuendo ("Love Gun," "Calling Dr. Love"). There are stabs at country-flavored melancholy, ("Hard Luck Woman," which was later covered by Garth Brooks), disco opportunism ("I Was Made for Lovin' You"), and the seed of the power-ballad movement that erupted in the '80s ("Beth.") Last but not least is "Rock and Roll All Nite," a quintessential rock and roll anthem in its own right.
Recorded between 1974 & 1979. Includes liner notes by Jeff Kitts.
Kiss: Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley (vocals, guitar); Gene Simmons (vocals, bass); Peter Criss (vocals, drums).
| | Kiss Ace, Gene, Peter, & Paul CD (2006)
Kiss music CDs
$52.39 Depending on which Kiss fan you ask, the group's 1978 solo albums were either the masked quartet's crowning achievement (from a merchandising standpoint), or they can be pinpointed as the beginning of the end for the original lineup. Either way, all four solo releases have seen numerous re-releases and/or repackagings over the years -- separate picture discs, a single disc Best of the Solo Albums compilation, and more. Nearly 20 years since the solo albums' original release, an import box set was issued that collected all four albums, 2006's Ace, Gene, Peter and Paul. No unreleased songs, demos, pictures or videos of the recording sessions are included, just the original albums, with each member's mug on the front of their respective CD (in fact, the only thing to entice Kiss collectors who already own these albums is a bottle opener that says "Detroit Rock City"). The music remains the same -- Ace Frehley's is the surprise of the bunch and the best, Paul Stanley's is the most Kiss-sounding, Gene Simmons took the most chances and detours, while Peter Criss' bordered on easy listening territory. It's been said before and still holds true -- if you plucked the three best tracks from each solo release, you would have had an extremely strong Kiss studio album. Let's face it though, most purchasers of Ace, Gene, Peter and Paul will not be hearing these tracks for the first time, but rather, looking to complete their extensive Kiss tchotchke collection. ~ Greg Prato
(4-CD box set containing a bonus metal beer bottle opener with a "Detroit Rock City" logo printed on it). A collector's item for sure, this Kiss box set from the Russian label Lilith brings together all four 1978 Kiss solo albums: Ace Frehley's surprisin

| | Kiss Alive! Vinyl LP (1975)
Kiss album
$25.15 When Kiss released the double album ALIVE in 1975, the purpose was to capture the spark and energy of their electrifying live shows. Although the spectacular lighting, Gene Simmons' blood-spitting and Ace Frehley's smoke-emitting guitar went unseen, the thunderous power with which Kiss performed every night came across easily.
Recorded during a 1975 tour, ALIVE may not have matched FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE in sales, but it put Kiss on the map in the eyes of the music-buying public. Songs such as "Deuce" and "Cold Gin" became staples for hard-core fans and "Rock and Roll All Nite" became an anthem for everyone else. Chock full of solid rock & roll hooks that pack a consistent punch, ALIVE established Ace Frehley as a certified guitar god. Not unlike the Velvet Underground, who've been credited with inspiring legions of fans to go out and start their own bands, Frehley was equally as influential to another generation. His fretwork on songs such as "Parasite" and "Let Me Go, Rock 'N' Roll" went just as far in getting thousands of adolescents to go out and pick up guitars.
Includes liner notes by Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss and Robert V. Conte.
Kiss: Paul Stanley (vocals, guitar); Gene Simmons (vocals, bass); Peter Criss (vocals, drums); Ace Frehley (guitar, background vocals).
| | Kiss This-A Main Man Records Tribute To Kiss CD (2007)
Kiss CD music
$11.39 "KISS THIS" is a loving tribute to the hottest band in the world. THE DONNAS, ZE MALIBU KIDS (Jeff & Steven McDonald from REDD KROSS) and many more show their respect to the group that influenced more rock 'n' rollers to pick up an instrument than any other. Kick-ass versions of such KISS classics as "Do You Love Me?", "Cold Gin" and "God Of Thunder" are re-imagined in a variety of styles, from punk to metal to industrial to downright bizarre... but every song on this tribute is done with love for the band that changed the (painted) face of rock 'n' roll forever!

| | Unearthly Trance Season Of Seance, Science Of Silence CD (2003)
Kiss songs
$12.99 Long Island's Unearthly Trance arrived just in time to try and fill some of the void left by the sadly disbanded Warhorse, and 2003's Season of Séance, Science of Silence -- their full-length debut for The Music Cartel -- attempts to stake their claim as one of America's most extreme purveyors of doom/death metal. Indeed, the impossibly low-ended frequencies attained by snail-paced sludge-fests like "Mass of the Phoenix" (whose lyrics are credited to none other than Aleister Crowley!) and "The Aftermath Was Morbid" simply must be heard to be believed. Frankly, their seemingly unending, perilously close to bowl-releasing thrumming (lasting at least nine-minutes each) usually proves a tad much for the senses to process, but with their varied speeds, distinctive riffs, and the semiversatile vocals of main man Rion Lipynsky (ranging from a hoarse rasp to an equally tortured clean-singing style), more diversified (if equally challenging and lengthy) compositions like "Raised by the Wolves" and "Wandering Winter Winds" fare much better. Also on hand, shorter offerings like "When Anti-Humanity Flourishes" and "Black Heart/Black Lung" provide a welcome change of pace, while showcasing the trio's already very mature and confident interplay as a group. In short, while certainly not for the faint of heart (or dangerously incontinent), this exploration of the extreme qualifies as a promising start for Unearthly Trance. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | Front Street Project CD (2005)
Kiss songs
$9.35 "The Front Street Project comes to forefront"by: Andrew Griffin (Alexandria Daily Town Talk)When Alexandria guitarist Adam Guillory began playing acoustic gigs with his friend Trace Hester in 2003, he had no idea they would soon expand into a four-piece that channeled the energy of Dave Matthews Band and the Allman Brothers. But there was some dues-paying to be had."We started playing in coffee shops first and before long we were saying, 'We should expand and add some hand percussion," said Guillory, 21, who took to the guitar in his early teens."It struck a chord with me," Guillory said, adding with a chuckle, "No pun intended."The two college guys knew they could do more."We evolved one step at a time," Guillory said. "And once the electric guitar entered we said, 'This is our sound, let's develop that.'"And that they did.Guillory and Hester, 20 were soon joined by drummer Chris Hampton, 21 and bassist Ben Rosier, 20 and The Front Street Project -- named after the main street in downtown Natchitoches -- was formed."When we had our first gig at Pioneer Pub on Front Street we didn't have a name. So we just came up with 'The Front Street Project' and it stuck. That's how everybody came to know us as."That was in January 2004.Within a year, the quartet was scoring gigs at well-attended events like RiverFest and Red, White and Blue at the Zoo. They also found time to record a four-song EP down at Sockit Studio in Baton Rouge, the same place Grammy nominee Mystikal recorded. The discs are available at Sam Goody in the Alexandria Mall and will soon be available online at CDBaby.com.Guillory, who is also a student at Louisiana College, admits that their sound is mixture of 1990s-styled alternative rock mixed with a jamband flavor, like a mix of the Counting Crows and the Grateful Dead or as Guillory put it "Like Hootie meets Dave.""We have that spirit of a jamband and we like to improvise."As for tour plans, Guillory said he and the guys are sticking close to home since they're all attending college, although they lament the fact that there are few venues that take chances on up-and-coming jambands with an alternative flair."We want to play Shreveport, Ruston and Baton Rouge," he said. "And we've already been to Lafayette where they have good college hangouts."They will play in a Katrina benefit gig sponsored by KALB on Oct. 1, something the band is proud to be a part of.The band hopes to get some local airplay as well."As far a group dynamic and getting along, it couldn't be better," Guillory said. "We're having fun."

| | Oasis Masterplan CD (1998)
Kiss music CDs
$6.35 THE MASTERPLAN is a collection of Oasis B-sides of UK singles and EPs.
After proving their staying power with 1997's BE HERE NOW, Oasis culls together b-sides and tracks which were previously available only as imports in the US on THE MASTERPLAN. This aptly titled collection fleshes out the legend, going back to older b-sides like "Fade Away" and "(It's Good) To Be Free" and newer flip-sides like "Stay Young." Opening with explosive live favorite "Acquiesce," THE MASTERPLAN will satiate the rabid completist but, with tracks as powerful as the slow-building anthem "Half the World Away," it's also sure to convert any newcomers. The ambitious (though, truth be told, not surprising) live cover choice of "I Am The Walrus" rounds out this energetic, often unexpected chapter in the story of this modern pop phenomenon.
Includes liner notes by Paul Du Noyer.
Oasis: Noel Gallagher, Liam Gallagher, Bonehead, Alan White.
Additional personnel: Paul Weller.
