Arguably Ut's best, this double-EP set has moments even more adventurous than Conviction did. Easily their most coherent record, as the band sounds tighter and more in control, without sacrificing one bit of the looseness and noise that make them so distinctive. The songs here sound as though more attention was paid to their construction and writing, making this is a more polished record in many ways. But not every edge is sanded smooth; there's plenty of bark and bite here. ~ John Dougan

In Guts House album
$12.05 Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).
When the Silver Apples were formed in the mid-60's, Simeon Coxe and Danny Taylor had no way of knowing that they were forging the prototype of experimental electronic music. Connecting over a dozen oscillators, Coxe created a homemade synthesizer which produced a world of futuristic bleeps, sweeps, distortions, and repetitious basslines. With the addition of Taylor's drums, they sounded like The Velvet Underground fronted by Nikola Tesla. In 1968 they released their eponymous album. Where their sound wasn't met simply with perplexity, it was met with perplexity and success--the single, "Oscillations," even cracked Philadelphia's top ten.
The success of SILVER APPLES allowed the band to use a 24 track studio to record their second album, ...
| | Cabaret Voltaire Mix Up CD (1979)
In Guts House CD music
$10.65 It's true that Cabaret Voltaire's first two proper studio albums hardly match the greatness of later works like Red Mecca, 2 X 45, and even 3 Crepuscule Tracks. Despite this, both Mix-Up and The Voice of America -- rather similar records that were released back to back in 1979 and 1980 -- only helped solidify Cabaret Voltaire's status as an integral part of the extended frisson of 1978-1982 post-punk, so if they had ceased to exist before their best work, it would still be very correct to refer to them as "important." ("Yes, important, but were they any good?") Mix-Up, their first album, impressively harnesses noise, primitive rhythm box percolations, tape loops, garbled vocals, and blasts of Farfisa. "Kirlian Photograph" is an ugly slab of dub with frizzling snaps of white-heat buzz, clunky percussion, and a plodding bassline forming its skanking, roiling rhythm. Both the bass and incidental vocals are relegated to the back of the mix as the piercing detritus takes center stage. A cover of the Seeds' "No Escape" evidences Cabaret Voltaire's paradox as a seemingly anti-rockist band who -- at their heart (for ...
| | Bardo Pond Selections Volumes I-IV CDs (2005)
In Guts House music CDs
$16.49 Philadelphia indie-psych drone masters Bardo Pond return with a new double CD offering comprised of 17 rare and unreleased tracks that have previously only been available in limited numbers as CD-Rs at the band's live shows. Selections is the band's 7th full-length release, and documents the highlights of their career, remastered and repackaged by ATP Recordings. 2005.
Philadelphia space rockers Bardo Pond pulled together a collection of rare tracks that were previously available only on CDR's sold at their shows. While oddities and B-sides compilations are often hit and miss, Bardo Pond managed to keep the filler level low and instead released a double-disc that provides ...
| | Akron/Family & Angels Of Light CD (2005)
In Guts House songs
$12.95 On Akron/Family & Angels of Light, the most functional if unrelated family in Brooklyn shares disc space with Angels of Light, a band made up of Akron/Family plus Young God Records honcho Michael Gira. There's nothing weird about the pairing -- the four Akron members simply stop being fake kin for a while and join Gira for the record's final five songs -- but few would venture to say the disc itself is not weird. Which doesn't preclude it from sounding great. Step right up, says the first half, with its moments of Beatles-inspired introspection that blow up into skronk-spiced sonic freakouts. The band tempers these ("Moment" is a good example) with warm blasts of country-folk on the order ...
