When fans of extreme metal hear the word "complexity" in connection with black metal, many of them immediately think of symphonic black metal; they think of the bands that have expanded black metal's horizons by combining it with power metal and even progressive rock. But Mort, like previous Blut Aus Nord releases, brings complexity and nuance to black metal without having anything to do with symphonic black metal -- and while a symphonic black metal band might claim Queensr˙che, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden as influences (along with Dimmu Borgir and Emperor), this French outfit gets a lot of inspiration from industrial and goth rock. The non-black metal influences that have served Blut Aus Nord well in the past -- influences ranging from Godflesh and Killing Joke to the Sisters of Mercy to Neurosis -- continue to serve them well on Mort (which means "Dead" in French). Some black metal enthusiasts may argue that this black metal/alternative metal CD is strictly alternative metal and shouldn't even be called black metal; the vocals are raspy black metal-style vocals, but the brooding material is not structured in a typical black metal fashion -- and there are no blastbeats. However one categorizes Mort -- black metal, alternative metal or both -- this album is an exciting, memorable listen. Although Mort has its share of noise, distortion and feedback, the disc is not an exercise in ferocity for the sake of ferocity. Mort is heavy without being claustrophobic or oppressive, and it is also moody and darkly atmospheric; this release isn't really about songwriting (none of the tunes have a standard verse/chorus/verse/chorus format) but rather, about maintaining a very dark, eerie and gloomy atmosphere. It would be a stretch to call Mort genuinely disturbing -- Blut Aus Nord doesn't convey evil the way that Slayer, one of their influences, conveys evil -- but even so, it is a memorable addition to their black metal/alternative metal catalog. ~ Alex Henderson

ESCHATON, the third full-length release by this two-man U.K. industrial black metal project is slightly less concerned than its immediate predecessor with injecting melody into the shrieking blast-furnace/blender noise that is their primary sound. There's a guitar solo on "The Destroying Angel" that's heavily indebted to Slayer's Kerry King, and a melodic chorus on "Timewave Zero" that recalls their previous effort, DOMINE NON ES DIGNUS, but for the most part it's a savage, ugly album produced and programmed with merciless precision. The programmed blastbeats create a foundation of cold inhumanity which is matched by the nihilism of the electronically altered vocals, while the guitar riffs, which seem doubled by heavily processed, in-the-red keyboards, saw at the listener's eardrums. These guys have taken Motörhead's dictum of "everything louder than everything else" and blended it with the Tyrell Corporation (from BLADE RUNNER) motto ...

Mort CD music

French black metal grinders Blut Aus Nord have been written about as the second coming of Satan -- if Satan had a progressive approach to making a particularly European strain of black metal -- and, judging by their own comments and web site, they might even believe that themselves!. Sonically, these guys love dissonance; they love thick heavy atmospheres and feedback and they love to mess with tempos stretching out time and sending it into a void. This is supposed to be aesthetically artistic and innovative music, and it might be for the genre, but all one has to do is listen to Killing Joke's What's This For? from 1980, and strain it through early Godflesh, the vocals of the Germs' Darby Crash, and ...

Thanks to a pair of brilliantly executed albums in 1999's Pale Folklore and 2002's The Mantle (plus 2001's none too shabby Of Stone, Wind and Pillor EP), Portland, Oregon's Agalloch became, quite possibly, the greatest American black metal band ever, or at the very least, the first American black metal band that really mattered! Such claims should not to be thrown about lightly, its true; but why measure words when faced with the worshipful fervor with which extreme metal fans embraced the enigmatic quartet's inspired creations, featuring corrosive black metal spliced with delicate folk music into arrangements improbably fluid, majestic, and avant-garde? Oh, and the torturously long waits in between their releases didn't hurt matters either, only fueling the notoriously withdrawn band's budding cult legend, while their supporters dug in their heels for what wound up becoming an anxious, four-year vigil leading up to the arrival of Agalloch's third magnum opus, 2006's Ashes Against the Grain. Interestingly, as was the case with each previous effort, this offering displays marked evolution beyond its direct predecessor, so that, where The Mantle had incorporated ever-increasing ...

Along with raging against the Catholic Church and promoting the apocalypse in the name of their ol' buddy Satan, Austria's Belphegor have always prided themselves on delivering the most brutal, lightning-fast combination of death and black metal imaginable -- over and over again, album after album. 2006's Pestapokalypse VI is yet another example of this enterprise; opening with a track that's helpfully entitled "Belphegor -- Hell's Ambassador," before unleashing a veritable deluge of similarly frenzied sonic typhoons. These invariably contain eye-popping displays of high-velocity musicianship set to suspiciously machine-like percussion, and, at their best (check out the standout pair of "Seyn Todt in Schwartz," "Pest Teufel Apokalypse"), challenge Belphegor's better-known contemporaries, such as Poland's Behemoth and Brazil's Krisiun, for tee-total speed-freak supremacy. Thankfully, slower-creeping numbers like "Angel ...

Remember the old Timex watch slogan, "Takes a licking and keeps on ticking"? Well, the same could be said about Enuff Z'nuff. The group has been through a lot during its lengthy career -- unwise fashion choices, changing musical tastes, record label snafus, seeing lesser-talented bands of its genre skyrocket -- but the band is still rockin' and rollin', as evidenced by its 12th studio album, ?. While most veteran bands from the "glam rock '80s" decided that a stylistic makeover was in order come the 21st century (cough...Mötley Crüe), Enuff Z'nuff have stuck to their guns through it all. And ? is no different -- power pop that is steeped deeply in Cheap Trick-esque twists and turns, and is also the group's first record in years to include contributions from all four of its original members. If you make it past the purposely (one assumes) hard to take interlude of "Gorgeous," you'll find a fine pop gem -- which sees Chip Znuff assume vocal duties, as well as such other similarly styled highlights as "Home Tonight" and "Harleya," plus a fun album-closing ...

Sheryl Crow Detours CD  (2008)

More than 14 years after her lauded debut, Tuesday NIGHT MUSIC CLUB, Sheryl Crow reunited with that breakthrough album's producer, Bill Bottrell, for her 2008 outing, DETOURS. While both records are accomplished and willfully dynamic, DETOURS is the sound of someone who's been through a real emotional wringer, and, indeed, Crow had, having battled breast cancer, split from beau Lance Armstrong, and adopted a baby all shortly before these studio sessions. The resulting tracks play to Crow's strengths as both a singer and a songwriter--while the spare, lo-fi opener, "God Bless This Mess," and the achingly tender closer, "Lullaby for Wyatt," highlight her emotive, slightly sandpaper-y vocals, the jangly "Love Is Free" and the sweeping "Love Is All There Is" are catchy, top-notch pop tunes. Making some stylistic DETOURS (witness the Middle-Eastern-tinged, Madonna-like "Peace Be Upon Us"), Crow also uses this collection to get topical, not only on some of the above-mentioned songs, but on the funky, petrol-addled narrative "Gasoline" and the beat-driven missive "Out of Our Heads." Both fiery and thoughtful, DETOURS nods back to the eclecticism of MUSIC CLUB, but it also points promisingly to Crow's continued relevance as a pop fixture.
