John Bunch hardly shows signs of slowing down in his eighties, still proving himself as a very lyrical jazz pianist in this CD salute to composer Jimmy Van Heusen. Since all 15 songs are rather well known from their vocal versions (many were hits for Frank Sinatra), Bunch had his work cut out for him to create fresh adaptations of each piece. Well accompanied by bassist David Green and drummer Steve Brown, he opens with a jaunty take of "All This and Heaven Too," followed by a lush, deliberate take of the ballad "Nancy with the Laughing Face." He loosens up "I Thought About You" a bit by tackling it at a brisk clip, while his stride arrangement of "But Beautiful" is full of humor. His scoring of "The Second Time Around" is a bit darker than typical settings. It is hard to beat the elegance of Bunch's setting of "Moonlight Becomes You." With so many record dates under his belt accompanying great vocalists, John Bunch never strays too far from any of these great melodies, and his improvisations build upon each song's framework in a logical manner, without getting overly predictable. Green and Brown (the latter frequently using brushes) provide excellent support throughout the sessions. This very relaxing CD is perfect for unwinding after a busy day. ~ Ken Dryden

| | Don Friedman Waltz For Debby CD (2003)
At The Nola Playhouse: Salutes Jimmy Van Heusen music CDs
$15.49 This trio date led by Don Friedman is comparable to a typical Bill Evans session in several ways. Joined by bassist George Mraz and drummer Lewis Nash, one hears three strong musicians interacting rather than a rhythm section playing follow-the-leader with the pianist. Secondly, Friedman, like Evans, loves playing great melodies. Finally, Friedman is a gifted composer, though his pieces are obviously not as well known as Evans' works. But the comparison ends there, as Friedman has a distinctive style of his own. The title track is obviously Evans' best-known composition, though Friedman's interpretation of it is more aggressive and ...
| | Stan Getz Bossas & Ballads: The Lost Sessions CD (2003)
At The Nola Playhouse: Salutes Jimmy Van Heusen songs
$15.39 First off, these "Lost Sessions" were never actually lost. The music here was supposed to be released as the Stan Getz Quartet's first issue on A&M, and for the usual record company reasons, it was shelved instead. The tapes were in the vault and catalogs, so it's not like they were found in someone's closet. The bottom line is that Getz, already ill at this point, ...

At The Nola Playhouse: Salutes Jimmy Van Heusen album
$26.59 This budget five-disc box collects Reinhardt's first 124 recordings between 1934-1939. Curiously enough, despite the title, these sides aren't chronological, a fact that engineer Ted Kendall admits in the liner notes. Rather, while each disc's featured sessions are presented mostly chronologically, the discs themselves are rather awkwardly sequenced, with different discs covering different years in a seemingly random order. That doesn't really detract from the set's appeal, ...
