| | Jia Peng Fang Rainbow CD (2000)
Moonlight CD music
$14.79 Much like his previous release on Pacific Moon Records, River, Rainbow is a delicate, emotive collection of songs which combine traditional Chinese instrumentation with ambient instrumentation. Fang plays the niko, a stringed instrument which mimics the sound of the human voice, and the clarity of that sound lends much to the spiritual tone of this album. Evoking the open spaces and peaceful beauty of the wilderness in springtime, Fang creates a series of melodies where the silence between the sounds is as important as the notes themselves. A gentle and soothing recording, Rainbow will delight fans of new age and Asian music alike. ~ Stacia Proefrock

| | Missa Johnouchi Road To Oasis CD (2002)
Moonlight music CDs
$14.65 Pianist and keyboard player Missa Johnouchi is certainly accomplished enough as a player and arranger, and her idea of blending Western new age melodies and Chinese instrumentation from the Li-Hua Ensemble makes for an exotic mix. The problem, if it really is one, is that the melodies she composes are a little too pretty and sweet. You bite into one and it's all air, without any substance or depth. However, while that might not be too satisfying in the long-term, it does mean that Road to Oasis makes good background music. The Eastern instruments do catch the ear -- although they, too, play in a very Western style -- with the unmistakable pipu and erhu. But while there are touches of Eastern promise, the record never delivers on its possibilities. The spiritual connection between new age and the East is obvious, but really never gets explored before a few mild spices (and the incense sticks in the jewel box). It's a shame, because the quality of playing is there, with both "The Last Caravan" and "Moon Over the Border" being standouts of touch. Of course, the gossamer quality of the touch ends up being too lightweight, as stated. But for your next dinner party, it could be the perfect soundtrack. ~ Chris Nickson

| | Dan Barrett & His Extra-Celestials Moon Song CD (1998)
Moonlight music CDs
$9.59 Dan Barret And His Extra-Celestials includes: Dan Barret (leader, vocals, trombone, cornet); Rebecca Kilgore (vocals, acoustic guitar); Scott Robinson (clarinet, tenor saxophone); Bryan Shaw (trumpet, cornet); Bucky Pizzarelli (guitar).
Trombonist Dan Barrett leads his Extra-Celestials on a set of spirited small-group swing. The repertoire is full of obscurities (including Benny Carter's "Scratch My Back" and Red McKenzie's "Georgianna," "Mound Bayou," and "Mama, That Moon Is Here Again") and a few superior standards. Barrett (who also plays cornet, wrote all of the arrangements, and takes a rare vocal) is joined throughout by some of his favorite musicians: singer Rebecca Kilgore (who is heard on six of the 13 selections), pianist Dave Frishberg, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, bassist Joel Forbes, drummer Jeff Hamilton, altoist/flutist Chuck Wilson, tenor saxophonist Brian Oglivie, and Scott Robinson (clarinet, ...

| | High Contrast High Society CD (2004)
Moonlight album
$12.29 High Contrast's 2002 debut was entirely unpretentious. Its giddy rookie drum'n'bass skitters went ballistic into vintage vocal sample atmospheres with nary a pander to the electronic music community's savagely permutational itch. In '04, after a year of stellar remix work, Contrast (aka Welshman Lincoln Barrett) returns with High Society, a remarkable statement-maker that drops its share of can't-miss dancefloor moments, but also revels in posing hyperkinetic percussion against gently swelling, almost melancholic basslines. This dynamic in the emotions and music makes Society as much an album as Contrast's first recording was, but also highlights where he's grown. Grime-hopeful Nolay spits hollow-point bullets over the snare reports, snyth cues, and bass pulses of "Angels and Fly" -- it sounds like Future Sound of London backing the boastful, malevolent transmissions of a pirate radio MC. But "Angels"' post-millennial tension is at sharp angles to "Just Say," a collaboration crossing Contrast's usual percussion slap with sunny guitar drop-ins, dubby horn samples, and the soulful patois of garage/dancehall vocalist Spoonface. As catchy as these tracks are, extended drum 'n' bass workouts like "Lovesick" and "Racing Green" keep the rhythms interesting by periodically suspending them in favor of chopped-up and filtered disco and soul samples. High Contrast then builds back up from these breaks, dropping in once again his insistent chattering snares. "Natural High" nods to ...
