| | Doug Macdonald Gentle Rain CD Doug Macdonald Discography of CDs
Long a busy member of the Los Angeles jazz community, guitarist Doug MacDonald has both a quiet sound and a hard swinging straight-ahead style. On Gentle Rain he performs five quartet numbers with pianist Ross Tompkins, a duo with the late pianist (who is heard on one of his final recordings) on "These Foolish Things," two numbers in which pianist Marty Harris is in Tompkins' spot, five pianoless trio numbers and a solo guitar feature on "Gentle Rain." The music is all standards including the one "original," "Cry," which is really a slightly disguised "I Cried for You." MacDonald sounds unhurried even at the faster tempos, and mellow even when the music is at its most heated. He is the epitome of cool jazz guitar throughout this enjoyable set, one of his finest to date. ~ Scott Yanow

Gentle Rain album
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, ...

$13.05 It took Frank Rosolino's widow Diane many years to find a label willing to release this music, and that is understandable. Frank Rosolino, one of jazz's greatest trombonists, went crazy on November 26, 1978, shooting two of his sons and killing himself. ...
| | Modern Jazz Quartet European Concert CD (1960)
Gentle Rain album
$11.59 Recorded live in Scandinavia in April 1960. Originally released on Atlantic (2-603). Includes liner notes by Joel Dorn and Jule Foster.
Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus Digital Services, New York, New York).
Long considered one of, if not the classic album from the Modern Jazz Quartet, European Concert defines them simultaneously as a recording entity as well as a working band. MJQ presented jazz in the context of a formally structured environment, much like a chamber group in the classical context. Within the band, the groove of Milt "Bags" Jackson's vibes met the solid swing of Connie Kay's drums, the funky strut of Percy Heath's bass, and the elegant classicism of John Lewis's piano. The MJQ were able, in a context that pushed ...

| | Bronze Statue In The Stone CD (2003)
Gentle Rain music CDs
$17.05 The Statue in the Stone is the debut album from Bronze, first released in January 2003 on The Bus Stop Label. UK indie power pop meets jangling americana.Bronze came together in January 2001 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The line-up is: Paul Handyside, lead vocal, guitar and piano; Ade Evans, drums, vocals; Rob Tickell, bass guitar, vocals. Handyside had previous releases on Arista and Kitchenware Records with eighties indie band Hurrah! "Full of the garage-rock sound currently gaining attention, as well as some polished Who-stuff, Hollies-psyche, and Beatle-isms that will make music lovers' teeth fall out from the sweet melodic goodness contained herein, the album is a pure pop joy. Anyone craving catchy melodies, concise meaningful guitar solos that don't wank on forever, and a primal garage-y thump that will shake your ass mightily, needs to buy this CD now. I would call it the best garage rock CD of the past two years but that would be limiting its' scope. It's one of the best guitar pop releases of the decade, is what it exactly is, and sounds more like a missing Revolver-era Beatles-slash-early R.E.M. time-meld track than anything else I've ever heard. Simply wonderful pop". {4 and a half stars}Scott Homewood Erasing Clouds"I think the theme of this issue is dreamy power pop. Bronze plays wonderfully-crafted stuff with plenty Byrds-y ringing guitar and slightly ragged harmonies. The songs are little gems, finely cut and exquisite at every facet. ... If I had to characterize the overall sound, I'd say this stuff is decidedly modern with more than a hint of 60s soul (no matter if the muse in question is Gram Parsons or Pete Townsend). In truth, the only proper label for Bronze's music is "great." These are eminently hummable songs with real depth. There's always another layer to uncover, and repeat listens will reward time and time again. Some folks hit the nail on the head; Bronze obliterates the target completely."John Worley Aiding & Abetting"Paul Handyside's Bronze have hit the ground running with their first album, which wisely bounds in with not one but two fine singles ("let it rain" and the even better "presence of greatness", recently re-issued as a cd single and not far off the peak ...
