Since bassist Neal Miner was one of the regular players at Smalls in New York City for over a decade, it should be no surprise that producer Luke Kaven would be interested in releasing a CD by Miner on the Smalls record label. Leading a strong post-bop sextet including pianist Steve Ash, trombonist John Mosca, trumpeter Richie Vitale, tenor saxophonist Chris Byars and drummer Tom Melito, Miner's originals would fit into the play list of any band specializing in the genre. Highlights include the tasty "Blues for Red and Brown" (saluting two giants of the bass, Red Mitchell and Ray Brown), a mellow ballad and bass feature "The Evening Sound," along with the catchy "Night Owls," which showcases Mosca extensively. If there's any reservation about these performances, it is a minor one -- Byars' tendency to repeat the same lick (a snatch of "Stranger in Paradise"), though even far bigger names have been known to fall into such a pattern on recording dates or in live settings. Neal Miner is one of a host of best kept secrets among New York jazz club patrons, though the greater exposure through this recommended release may give him a little more recognition. ~ Ken Dryden

Down Beat (p.66) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Miner leads a sextet mostly composed of Smalls stalwarts who understand that an engaging solo in this setting is better built with small details instead of broad strokes." JazzTimes (p.139) - "The writing is classic, the playing confident and the atmosphere genial and cozy..." Neal Miner Evening Sound Songs Evening Sound Review

Evening Sound
$14.35 The lack of liner notes doesn't give much clue as to how long Maucha Adnet has been active professionally as a vocalist, though a quote from Antonio Carlos Jobim indicates that she toured with the late, legendary composer. Her deep, soulful voice is very appealing, similar to that of Leny Andrade. Accompanied by a mix of Brazilian and American musicians, including pianist Helio Alves, flugelhornists Claudio Roditi and Michael Brecker, trombonist Jay Ashby, guitarists Mario Adnet and Romero Lubambo, bassist Nilson ...
| | Eddie Henderson Precious Moment CD (2006)
Evening Sound
$14.35 One of relatively few psychiatrists who has simultaneously established himself as an active jazz musician with an extensive discography (another is Denny Zeitlin), Eddie Henderson's prescription for jazz fans is this mellow, primarily ballad-oriented studio session. With pianist Kevin Hays, bassist Ed Howard and drummer Billy Hart, Henderson reprises one of Miles Davis' most memorable tracks from Kind of Blue. While he sticks to muted ...
| | Brad Mehldau House On Hill CD (2006)
Evening Sound
$15.65 House on Hill may be a new recording, but the material is not. Virtually everything here was written, according to his liner notes -- like Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau writes about himself best -- in a session done in 2004 which yielded 18 songs with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy. The decision was made to split the sets into originals and covers. The covers became 2004's Anything Goes. There are nine cuts here, the remaining seven from 2004, and the other two come from a more recent session. Mehldau states quite frankly that the compositions here mostly fall into the standard frame for small ensembles: theme (head) variations/theme. Mehldau's notes are exhaustive. They look at compositional forms of theme and its variations from Bach and Brahms. Yeah, it's an ...
| | Tomasz Stanko Lontano CD (2006)
Evening Sound
$14.65 The change of direction on Lontano, the third release by Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko and his three young collaborators -- Marcin Wasilewski (piano), Slawomir Kurkiewicz (bass), and Michal Miskiewicz (drums) -- is startling. Whereas Soul of Things (2002) and Suspended Night (2004) focused on Stanko's increasing sense of balladry and structurally harmonic, assonant atmospheres, Lontano showcases a band confident enough after playing for five years to find real space for free improvisation. Recorded in the south of France instead of Oslo, producer Manfred Eicher works his name magic and allows stillness and silence to play as much a role as the performers engaging one another musically. ...
| | Bill Cunliffe The Blues And The Abstract Truth, Take 2 CD (2008) Digipak
Evening Sound
$13.39 Bill Cunliffe was invited to do an updated arrangement of Oliver Nelson's landmark album Blues and the Abstract Truth, a tough challenge, given Nelson's superb charts and the numerous all-stars he had on the 1961 session (pianist Bill Evans, alto saxophonist/flautist Eric Dolphy, and trumpeter Freddie Hubbard in the front line). But the pianist tweaked each of ...
