The debut album by Austin's Faceless Werewolves is a scrappy set of punky indie rock tunes suggesting a strong Sonic Youth and Superchunk influence both in the evenly divided vocals (all three members, guitarists Baldomero Valdez and Kelsey Wickliffe, and drummer Erica Barton, sing) and in their unapologetic fondness for fuzztone, feedback, and weird noises. Oddly tuned opening track "Elevation" goes the furthest in declaring guitar-hero fealty to Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, but even that song is based on a straightforward, catchy pop song structure. Even at its freakiest -- that would be the twisted Paisley Underground psych-rock wigginess of "Pegasus Versus the Unicorn" -- Medium Freaky stays true to its title: things occasionally threaten to get seriously weird, but they never quite do. (Case in point: that song segues effortlessly into the completely straightforward indie rock buzz of "I Tried to Love You.") The blend of texture and hooks is admittedly nothing particularly new, but there's an undeniable sense of pure rock & roll swagger to songs like "My Weakness" and "One Arm Man" that keeps Medium Freaky from becoming merely a colorless genre exercise. In fact, it's a genuinely fun and encouraging debut. ~ Stewart Mason Faceless Werewolves Medium Freaky Songs Medium Freaky Review

Medium Freaky album
$14.49 Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk the tune with burnished breath, eking out the drama line by line. It's over the top for sure, but Bublé takes you to the edge of the cliff, prepares to jump, and then gives you a knowing wink that says, not quite yet -- there's more fun to be had. And what fun it is with Bublé swinging through "All of Me," and killin' Van Morrison's classic "Crazy Love" with a light and yearning ...
| | Bob Dylan Christmas In The Heart CD (2009)
Medium Freaky CD music
$10.09 After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous ...

| | Beatles Abbey Road CD (1969) Limited Edition; Remastered; Digipak; Enhanced CD
Medium Freaky songs
$15.55 ABBEY ROAD, recorded in the summer of 1969, was the last album recorded by the Beatles (LET IT BE was released in 1970, but recorded in early '69).
This reissue of ABBEY ROAD has been digitally re-mastered. It comes packaged with replicated original U.K. album art, an expanded booklet containing original and newly written liner notes, and rare photos. Limited quantities of the CD are embedded with a brief documentary film about the album.
After the laborious disorganization and infighting that characterized early 1969's LET IT BE sessions (as famously captured on film), the fractious four were willing to let George Martin take the reins and to work with him as a cohesive unit for ...
| | 30 Seconds To Mars This Is War CD (2009)
Medium Freaky album
$12.24 On This Is War, 30 Seconds to Mars shift their music with the shifting times, adopting a hybrid of the Killers' retro new wave and My Chemical Romance's gothic prog, winding up with a sound that suits their stance. Producers Steve Lillywhite and Flood, both veterans of U2, do give This Is War an appropriately epic scale, helping to bring into focus this mix of synth rock, metal, and prog flavors with Auto-Tuned vocals, gurgling synthesized loops, Kanye cameos, and a children's choir on almost every other song. This move toward goth-glam requires 30 Seconds to emphasize hooks and gives them aural variety, which makes this their most appealing album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Emotional bloodletting never quite fit 30 Seconds to Mars -- perhaps it was residual prejudice from Jared Leto's status as actor-turned-musician, but they always seemed to skim the surface, not even when they pushed roiling emotions to the forefront in the best traditions ...
| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Medium Freaky CD music
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired ...

$38.19 The self-titled debut album from The Dresden Dolls includes the tracks "Good Day" and "Missed Me."
Inevitably, music will have leaders as well as followers, and both have their place. It's unrealistic and foolish to think that every artist who comes along should be a trendsetter; people who shake things up as intensely as Charlie Parker, the Sex Pistols, John Coltrane, the Beatles, or Nirvana are the exception instead of the rule. But when someone does come up with something that is truly fresh, he/she deserves applause -- and there is plenty of freshness on this self-titled CD by the Dresden Dolls, a Boston-based duo that successfully blends alternative pop/rock with German cabaret. Lead singer Amanda Palmer brings ...
