"Out Of This World" was Cole Porter's last Broadway show; he wrote the music and lyrics.
Although the original Broadway cast recording of Cole Porter's Out of This World, having been recorded on New Year's Eve, 1950, fell out of copyright in Europe 50 years and one day later on January 1, 2001, the British label Prism Leisure, which specializes in unlicensed reissues of such albums, has waited several years to come up with its own cut-price version. One reason may be that there didn't seem to be any hurry, since the show was a flop and has lapsed into obscurity. Another is that, by waiting, Prism was able to include the best-known song associated with the show, a song that was cut from the score and didn't begin its march to becoming a standard until it was interpolated into the movie version of Porter's Kiss Me, Kate in 1953, "From This Moment On." Added on at the end of the formal cast recording are the movie rendition of "From This Moment On," performed by Tommy Rall, Ann Miller, Bobby Van, and Bob Fosse, and Frank Sinatra's cover of the main romantic ballad from Out of This World, "I Am Loved." That the makers of Out of This World could discard its best song during out-of-town tryouts says a lot about their artistic judgment (or lack of it), which contributed to the failure of the musical. There may have been other reasons for that failure having to do with the staging, but from the point of view of the cast recording of the score, there are two. First, the cast is not particularly distinguished. The lead actress is Charlotte Greenwood, 60 years old at the time, who had been a popular second banana in some Hollywood movie musicals, but hadn't been in the theater in more than two decades. She is adequate, but no Ethel Merman, and her fellow performers are faceless. Second, this simply isn't one of Porter's great scores. There are flashes of his wit and melodic facility, but this isn't a set of songs on a par with its immediate predecessor, Kiss Me, Kate. This disc, mastered from an old LP, has audible surface noise, making it distinctly inferior in sound to the 1992 legitimate CD reissue by Sony Broadway, though the collection is strengthened by the addition of "From This Moment On." One of Cole Porter's best late-era scores, Out of This World never fared as well as it deserved to; compared to its immediate predecessor, Kiss Me, Kate, it was a mere footnote in the history of Broadway, and never even lingered as long in the consciousness as Silk Stockings, which followed it by five years. Perhaps it was just because the producers, in tinkering with the show ahead of its opening, went and removed what proved to be the biggest hit generated by the score, "From This Moment On" (which resurfaced in the film Kiss Me Kate); or the subject matter, which was a little too outré (a love affair between a god and a mortal). One should give credit to Columbia Records for its willingness to record a cast album for a show that was not an instant hit and, indeed, struggled to reach the rather anemic threshold of 157 performances. What we have here, however, is a very fine record not only of a great show -- with several memorable numbers, including "I Am Loved," "I Sleep Easier Now," and "I Jupiter, I Rex" -- but one that captures the early work of William Redfield and the late-career ...
